The only home Riga Garrison has ever known is the Tunnel, a subterranean research facility buried deep beneath Antarctica’s ice and snow.

Yet, while a safe haven for the last outpost of humanity governed by the Initiate, it is also home to a secret so dark that they will risk anything to protect it.

Surrounded by deceit and faced with exile to a frozen wasteland, Riga must defy not only the Initiate's top biologists and loyalists but also her own mother, in an attempt to unearth the truth.

Laura L. Fox first realized she could become the magical person behind her favorite books when she received a personal letter from one of her favorite childhood authors, Ann M. Martin. The writing bug took hold and hasn’t let go since. From early attempts at Animorphs fan fiction to Michael Crichton-inspired tales of adventure, Laura has found her true voice and passion in YA science fiction.

When she’s not writing, she can be found curled up on the couch knitting, reading, crocheting, or napping with one (or more) of her cats, who are her pride and joy.

Laura currently lives in the Midwest because she loves the colorful autumns and snowy winters, but dreams often of traveling to Iceland, New Zealand, Australia, England, and Scotland.

The Initiate is her debut novel and the first in a trilogy being published by OfTomes Publishing in November 2016.

I really really wanted to be able to love this novel, as I have loved some other novels by this publisher. But for some reason, it just wasn’t really working for me.

At the beginning, I felt like the pace was far too slow. The writing is pretty descriptive, which means it takes time for me to get a grip of the world we are involved in. And even though this world building is very unique and unlike anything I have read before, it took me way too long to get personally immersed in it, which means I never really felt as wrapped up in the wonderful world as I could have been. And because of the slow pace, I felt even more bored in some regards.

I did like the characters well enough. Mynta was bright and bubbly and always energetic. Our main character, Riga, didn’t have the nicest of names (please note: this is a personal opinion and in no way affects my rating of the novel!) She was determined though, and she wouldn’t let anyone stop her curiosity, which is something you really have to admire in the girl. I liked them well enough, and we got to know about Riga’s background and why her mother/daughter relationship isn’t the best one. But for some reason, I always felt pretty distant from the main characters, and could never properly connect with them. Which meant I always felt distant… from the world and the characters too.

Then the story happened to be pretty slow too. By way of suspense, I felt like it was lacking. In the first quarter I have to admit that I was bored out of my mind. About halfway, things start to pick up a bit. But it never got me going enough for me to want to turn the pages and read further.

What I really did like about the book was the slow burn romance. The love interest, Rhys, was such a nice guy. He was thoughtful and caring and always there for Riga. We get to know a little bit about his backstory as well, and I liked what I read. In the end, I was pretty eager to get to the parts where Rhys was included, especially towards the end. It’s an entirely innocent, clean, young adult friendly kind of romance. But still, it’s the good kind with none of the ridiculousness of love triangles and all those shenanigans.

There was a conspiracy theory in the novel, and that’s what the book really centered around. When this was mentioned, I was pretty curious and I was finally getting into it! But this was towards the end, and before I knew it the book just – it just stopped! The ending was there and it was sudden and abrupt. I felt kind of cheated by it to be honest… I thought there would be more to it. I know there is going to be a sequel… but I’m not sure about it yet.

Maybe this one wasn’t for me, but it could be for you! If you like:

Slow burn romances, a detailed and creative world building, a focus on the working of relationships and what they can survive and have a taste for apocalyptic novels, this may work out better for you! So don’t be afraid to still give it a go.

First of all...wow. I am blown away by how well-written this book is. I received a free copy from OfTomes Publishing in exchange for an honest review on my Goodreads and blog. I must admit, sci-fi is not my turf. I've just started reading more from this genre, and find it's really hard to find good reads I enjoy. Having an education in science kind of deters you from reading about apocalyptic situations where science has failed us (when in fact they never have and never will in my opinion).

Anyway, I was very surprised by how much I actually liked Initiate! The writing was done brilliantly, the plot was fast, the MC was well developed and the chapters were short, which is a plus for me.

I like Riga Garrison in this as she's independent, fierce, inquisitive and also brave. The way she handled the hurdles she faced in the book was surprisingly mature. Most teenage characters in young adult books come off as whiny, arrogant and just plain selfish. But Riga is like a breath of icy fresh air. And her development throughout the book was good too.

I enjoyed the writing most of all. For a first time published author, this book is very well done. Shows the great potential in the author and the publishing company. Her facts about global warming and energy industry were also accurate! And I can vouch for that since I'm studying for a master in chemical engineering specializing in carbon capture. She apparently did her research well in this area, and I'm always impressed when an author takes time to understand the science aspect of their writing.

"We were the people who had polluted our own planet so much through our persistent, never-satiated greed that we had caused irreversible and extensive damage to our planet’s climate through global warming. We were the people who had allowed our own waste emissions to consume us, to poison the very air we breathed and the water we drank until we had to build bigger machines to purify the water needed by an out-of control world population hungry for an ever-increasing demand of clean water, energy, and fuel. We were the people who had had decades of research to warn us of environmental collapse, yet who ignored it in the noisy distraction of political bargaining.."

On top of this, my reason as to why I didn't give this book a full 5-stars is: I wish there were more to details surrounding the secrets...I wanted to know more of the Initiate! I felt we only got a quick glimpse to how evil this organization is.

Other than that, I really enjoyed this. And that cliffhanger! I know we have the second book included in the e-book, but I so want to know how Riga ends up after Book 1. Initiate is only the tip of the iceberg, I sense there's more amazing things coming our way from this author :)

If it were possible, I would have rated this 10 stars!

I flew through this book, every free moment I had was spent with Riga and Rhys as they uncovered secrets and deceptions in their little icy home. Riga Garrison is one of the best females characters of 2016! Spunky, independent, fearless, and loyal to those she loves, she pushes the boundaries and doesn't look back as she fights for answers. I love the character development and glances we're given into Riga's past. I also love her relationship with Mynta. The yin to her yang, total opposites and yet they are two puzzle pieces that complete each other. Their dialog flows seamlessly and it feels like you've known these girls for years.

The world building is perfect. I could clearly see the tunnels in my mind, especially the luge tunnels. I wanted to be on those sleds lugging right along with them! The tunneling system is brilliant, using the lights and signs to guide passengers. It was a thrill ride! The ecosystems, cafeteria, and living quarters are just what you'd expect to find in an underground society and I felt like I could see everything so clearly.

Everything moves quickly, but it works so well! It flows and weaves such a suspenseful and action packed story and I need more now! I kept thinking that I would going to figure out the twists before they happened, but I didn't and everything was much better than whatever I had dreamed up.

This book has left me breathless, and excited, and screaming for more answers! Laura L. Fox you have quickly become one of my favorite authors!

Update:
Is anyone else wondering what happened to this book. It was up for preorder and then just disapeared. I think the early reviewers out there who promoted this book should be told what happened. Its the right thing to do.

I cant say Im surprised by how good this was. The reviews coming in are simply amazing. What did surprise me was how much I loved all the characters. A captivating dystopian syfy set under the ice of antartica where the last humans survive after the devastating effects of global warming. Under the leadership of the Initiate not everything is as it seems. When Riga and her best friend start getting closer to a truth the Initiate rather keep hidden loyalities are questionned and lives get turned upside down.

I really enjoyed the female friendship in this book. I got a little frustrated when they got in a fight but I was able to come to terms with it later on. For the most part their relationship was wonderful and I thought there connection to the whale was awesome. I liked that she had a great connection with her best friends family. I also adored the love interest, Rhys. He was supportive and couragous. Not the usual controlling type we see in books lately. I love how Riga was inquisitve, intelligent and fiesty. Her relationship with her mom added a lot of intensity and emotions to the story.

I really liked the concept and the mystery aspect was thrilling. This story kept me reading well into the night. It was a quick and easy read with a fascinating setting. Those sledding tunnels were incredible. I love it when I dont see the main plot twist coming. I did guess some other things but I was still completely entertained. I didnt understand where they got some of there stuff from. Theres only so much you can do underground and I wish it would have been explained better how they got things like cosmetics.

We get more investigating than action scenes but that was my favorite part and we still get some great action scenes, especially at the end. I usually dont read sneak peeks of the second book because I rather read all of it at once but I just couldnt help myself this time. It was totally worth it. With the way things ended I needed those 2 extra chapters. I feel even more satisfied with the way I left things and Im really looking forward to reading the sequel. I hope I get a chance to review that one as well. I would totally recommend this.

This is a spoiler free review.

I gave this book 5/5 stars! This is an really intriguing science fiction novel. If you are a fan of science fiction, this novel is definitely for you!

This book takes place after global warming hit and killed off thousands of different species worldwide. The survivors of the human race (and many other species) now live underneath the remaining ice caps in Antarctica. They live in a placed called The Tunnel.

The story features a girl named Riga and her best friend Mynta. They are now questioning the work of The Initiate (A group of scientists, teachers, government, etc.) after they learn that an animal that was once deemed "extinct" may just be hidden in plain sight. As they start to question the actual work of The Initiate they learn more than they should about what was being kept secret. They must hide what they find out, but it isn't as easy as it seems.

This book was incredibly detailed and beautifully written. The friendships in the book seemed natural and not at all forced making them very believable. The settings were described so vividly and it made it seem as if I was there with them.

Full of secrets, suspense and twists. I highly recommend this book to everyone!

Disclosure: I received a download of this book from OfTomes Publishing for review. All opinions are my own.

As soon I read the synopsis of this novel I knew that this would be such a fun and amazing read. AND BOY WAS I RIGHT! This novel is set in a future world where a group of people live under the Antarctic in what they call tunnels, in order to survive. We follow a girl who's mother is addicted to her work, and it's not long until she uncovers something big that she begins to question her mother and the Initiate. This novel is full of twists that will leave you breathless and have your mind asking all sort of questions. I absolutely loved all of the character, except for one. You'll find out who that is once you read the story. And let's just say she has lots of redeeming to do with Riga and I. I love the world that Laura creates for us and I thought it was unique and brought together really well. I can't emphasize enough on how much I love love love this novel!!! You simply have no other choice but to fall in love with this captivating world and the characters. I can't seem to stop crying, this was such an incredible novel that I never wanted to finish. I guess that saying is true, "All good things must come to an end". I highly anticipate that everyone who loves Sci-fi check this book out. This novel is full of secrets and twists that will leave you searching for more.

Scifi set underneath the ice of Antartica? Yes please!

This book truly surprised me with its humor, characters, secrets and twists. I wanted answers from the very beginning. We are told that there has been an Incident and that many animals have gone extinct. But what happened during the Incident????

I adored the relationships between Riga and her bff Mynta and between Riga and Rhys. They were realistic, fun and did not feel 'pushed'.

Some things that happened were a little heartbreaking, but as a reader my heart is never whole so whatever.

One of the best parts, in my opinion, is the world of the Tunnel. It is so beautiful and the descriptions were so vivid!
And luging... omigod I wanna try it. Fast and dangerous? Just how I like it.

Initiate was a fast read that will stay with me for some time. Definitely a good scifi!

(And if I had to complain about something it would be the small mistakes my keen eye detected. But they weren't really bothersome, lol)

Initiate by Laura L. Fox was absolutely magnificent. The world that Fox created, and the story that she crafted, pulled me in and gripped me until the very end. It was an absolute masterpiece, and if I could give it more than five stars I would, because this story definitely deserves it. It was one of my favorite reads of the year so far, and is a MUST buy. Trust me; you do not want to miss out on this one! Go the extra mile a paperback copy on Amazon instead of just buying the eBook copy - you’re going to want to have this one physically sitting on your bookshelf.

Initiate takes place in an underground tunnel based society in Antarctica, and follows the main character Riga as she attempts to uncover the secrets of the only home she has ever known. Riga was a fantastic main character. Fox did a superb job making Riga a well-rounded and highly enjoyable main character. Riga is a feisty, loyal, brave, and tenacious in her search for answers. Riga isn’t without flaws, which is another thing I loved because it makes her a very realistic and relatable character.

Riga wasn’t the only character that I loved in this book though! Fox filled her book with amazing characters, and two of my favorites were definitely Rhys and Mynta. Rhys was the love interest, and the relationship between Rhys and Riga was a very natural and had a slow progression that I love. YA is way too full of “insta-love” between main characters, and is one of my biggest pet peeves when reading YA. So I was very relieved and happy when there was absolutely no “insta-love” in Initiate. Rhys himself was a witty, sincere, and fun character. He perfectly balanced Riga.

Mynta was Riga’s best friend, and the relationship between the two girls is enviable. Their friendship was so well written. Everything from the dialogue between the girls, to the history they shared, to the way they interacted with each other was on point. Mynta herself was quite different in character from Riga, but that was one of the best parts about their friendship.

The plot itself was incredibly well thought out. Fox took the overused dystopian cliché of an ultra-controlling government/system (and the subsequent rebellion) and breathed new life into it. This book was full of twists and turns, and one huge twist in particular that I did not see coming. It’s so rare that a book’s plot can surprise me so I always get really excited when it happens. This is definitely a book that crosses genres; it’s a dystopian novel, but it’s also a science fiction novel, and a mystery novel. The world building was very impressive as well. Fox put so much thought and detail in the world she created, and it definitely paid off. I loved picturing the complex tunnel system that the characters lived in.

This book was fast paced and addictive, I couldn’t put it down! I read it in a single sitting, not stopping for water, food, or sleep. It was THAT good. Laura L. Fox is an author to keep your eyes on! I’m giving Initiate 5/5 stars, and I wish I could give it more!

Book Review: Initiate by Laura L. Fox

Laura L. Fox introduces you to a world completely different to our own in many ways, and yet it’s a world that feels so very familiar. Initiate is her debut novel, published by the new and upcoming Oftomes publishing house. She has certainly started with a bang as she delves straight in to the sci-fi genre, writing like a seasoned pro.

The novel orbits around the life of young Riga Garrison who lives in our world’s possible distant future. Living far down below, under the ice sheets of Antarctica, her earth has been completely devastated by human beings and is no longer habitable. Then one day, Riga and her friend Mynta make a startling discovery, they witness the existence of a beautiful Whale, a creature all of her society had believed to be extinct because of the surfaces conditions. After this discovery, Riga heads down an unsteady slope as she realises the Institute that runs and controls her societies every move, may not be telling them the whole truth about the surface, or what inhabits it. Her world is “…sanitary, just how they want our minds…”.

It then becomes a fight for survival as Riga becomes a hunted girl, all because she knows too much. With the help of her new friend Rhys who plays for her affections, she struggles to find a way to save herself from the controlling Initiate and escape to the surface, where she might just find an important person from her past whom she had believed to be long dead.

The premise of this story reminds a reader a lot of our own decaying world, dying beneath our feet. It’s as though the novel is a cautionary tale to humankind as we continue to destroy our planet, and yet with the sci-fi element it takes you to a whole new, exciting level of pure imagination. Beautifully written, each chapter slides smoothly into the next making it difficult to put down. The characters are believable, their emotions potent and intoxicating, reminding a person of their own doubts and questions. Fox creates a world that I want to learn more about. All in all, a great, easy read.

Initiate is a breath of icy fresh air for the YA book world! Perfect for fans of Divergent and The Maze Runner - this thrilling novel set under the ice of Antartica has a dystopian feel to it and is filled to the brim with government conspiracies, deceit, secrets, action, mystery, sci-fi and romance.

All Riga Garrison has known living her whole life is 'The Tunnel', a scientific research facility built hundreds of miles under the Antarctic ice, as the surface of Earth lay waist to the repercussions of global warming. The people living there are the only humans remaining on Earth as mankind and animals where wiped out during the 'incident'.

But Riga and her friends Mynte and Rhys, discover things which they were never meant to see that contradicts the stories of Earth's incident, setting off a string off shocking and unexpected events which in turn, uncovers the deep dark secrets kept by the Initiate government.

Initiate was unlike a novel I have read before, the change of setting was refreshing, the characters felt real, likeable and I didn't want to see anything bad happening to them, the descriptions of the facility and luging systems were epic, I felt like i was being taken for a ride. This novel gripped me from the beginning and didn't let go till the very exciting, rollercoaster of a ride, ending! The mystery and secrets behind the novel had me reading faster, the startling discoveries where out of this world and the sweet romance was heartwarming. Initiate has you questioning everything till the end like why they're there, what really happened on the surface, and why all the secrecy? It compelled me to read on to find out the answers.

The writing and pacing of the story kept me hooked. I had to put it down a few times, just to take it all in and to think about the events - the secrets and mysteries were uncovered slowly, bit by bit which kept me holding out to the very end!!

***** 5 stars for Initiate!!

Wow!!! Just wow. I have to say that was one of the best debut novels I have read in a while. I was sent this book by OfTomes Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Like the synopsis says it is chalk full of secrets. For this being Laura's first published novel the writing is amazing and I only see her getting even better in the future. The main character Riga Garrison was so well developed and probably one of the best main characters I have read about this year. She is independent, brave, fierce, and loyal but at times her vulnerability shows which in this case is not a bad thing. I honestly loved all the characters except for a select few but I will let you read the book to come to your own conclusions on that. There were three characters that I absolutely fell in love with and cant wait to carry on with there story. The world building was on point. I could clearly visualize everything as she described it. I especially loved the luge. I think that would be such an exhilarating ride. This book had me hooked from the prologue and kept me on the edge of my seat all the way to the end with all the twists. I read this in less than 24 hours it was so good. I honestly don't feel like I can do this book justice with anything I write. It is one of the best books I have read this year and I HIGHLY recommend you read it.

This book officially got me into sci-fi.

It doesn’t happen a lot but I finished it in one sitting and I loved every single page.

This was so beautiful and incredible written. The characters were absolutely amazing, I fell in love with so many and actually wish some were real. This is the first book I have read that’s situated in Antarctica so that was really interesting.

It’s is absolutely perfect for you if you’re a fan of The Divergent series and The Maze Runner. This book made me feel like I was a part of the story and made it very hard to put down (so I didn’t and read it all at once).

This is Laura L. Fox her debut novel and she totally won me, I cannot wait to read more of her works.

Beautifully captivating, Initiate is a book that I just couldn't put down.

Right from the word go, I was hooked into the world of Riga and Rhys and the secrets of Initiate and I just wanted to know what would happen next. I love stories set in Antarctica (why aren't there more of them?) and the premise of this story was unique and curious and not what I was expecting at all. The twist in this story is worth the read and I really want to read the next book in the series.

The book that Oftomes is calling the sci-fi book of the year and after only the first few chapters it’s easy to see why. Riga lives, works, socialises in the Tunnel - a man-made station in the Antarctic housing the last remnants of humanity after we have effectively killed the planet. Nestled deep within the ice, the most the colony can do is listen to the seals that surround their home while staring out of the viewing window into the ice cold sea around them. This is more than enough to make a gripping dystopian story however; Fox delivers this and much more as we are launched into a thrilling chase for answers.
We follow Riga, daughter to senior marine biologist Ariadne who likes nothing more than to skip classes and explore the luging tunnels which once served as a transportation system through the ice. She does this Mynta, her best friend who is more than happy to join Riga. The two of them have only known the Tunnel; second generation they are indoctrinated into their life’s run by the Initiate who are apparently an open organisation looking into their welfare and the welfare of the ecosystem around them. Their beliefs are shattered when they encounter a long thought dead mammal through the viewing window and begin to question its existence. From this point on they are hounded by questions and conspiracy’s which threaten to drive them apart.
Which they do. After their questions bring them unwanted attention Mynta is threatened and leaves Riga to proceed with their quest alone. Or so they both think. Walk in attractive male who is outgoing, cheeky and funny who, may or may not have a serious crush on Riga - Rhys. Rhys works on the luging tunnels which Riga loves and offers her a ride on one of their repair days. After travelling down an unmarked tunnel they arrive at a warehouse where the Initiate are keeping more than skeletons and relics of the past. *Cue dramatic music*
The idea of an over bearing, all knowing organisation with secrets is not new but, Fox manages to bring the scenario to a new life with questions as to how far the Initiate will go to keep their secrets and what secrets are they actually hiding.
I won’t spoil the surprise in the book as to what they find in that warehouse all I will say is that Fox has written this so well I didn’t see it coming, like I really didn’t. I was so caught up in how we destroyed the Earth and the environment that the characters were in that it knocked me sideways, something not many books are able to do. The not-so-subtle foreshadowing in other books written to almost perfection in this one.
The environmental impact of the book really struck and chord with me and I have a feeling it will with others too. There is a sense of real devotion to the environment and despondency of what happened to the planet. In a time where we can actually see creatures dying off it is a real wake up call to those who are blind or ignorant towards it and the possibilities of what life will look like for us when we are one of the only creatures left.
I will finish up by saying that when this book comes out on November 15th you need to buy it. The issues is raises and deals with are current yet timeless at the same time – familial, environmental, friendship and knowledge. Fox weaves magic on the page as we drawn into her world and forced to look at ourselves in the mirror and ask, is this what we want for our planet?

FULL ORIGINAL REVIEW @ HERE!

*I’d like to thank Oftomes for another wonderful early review copy in exchange for an honest review*

The story that Laura L. Fox brought to life in this book was all kinds of amazing! It was interesting, fun, fast-paced, mysterious, and very, very intriguing. So intriguing that I couldn’t put it down for long! I loved every single mystery that Riga and Mynta got to uncover through the first few pages of the book after their encounter with something they weren’t meant to see; something they’d been taught as extinct throughout their whole lives in the Tunnels. But with every mystery they uncovered, things started changing around them, and unexpected plot-twists happened, making the story as intense as I could’ve possibly imagined. What I mostly loved about these twists was how they changed Riga’s perspective of her life in the Tunnels and the Initiate. And even if these twists brought ups and downs into her life, I loved how she still managed to move forward and seek for more answers with the help of her friends. If I were to say which was my favorite twist, I’d say that it was the one about the D’Andari. Why? Because I never saw it coming—and it was great!

Now, talking about some other things, Laura’s writing was great! So great that I found the setting (the Tunnels) to be completely amazing, original and even creepy—or pretty much claustrophobic. The Tunnels were under the Artic Sea, huge, and full of all kinds of secrets! There were apartments for everyone, offices, a library, a school, labs, a “green area” with a huge window that lets you look out into the sea and even a lugging(?) area—which Riga loved! You could say that everyone lived happy, healthy and safe inside these tunnels, and the only thing they feared was being exiled into the outside world. But, is that all they should fear?

*insert evil laugh here*

I found every single character in Riga’s story very well introduced and developed throughout the pages. I loved how different they were from each other, and how each and one of them managed to make Riga’s story as intense, fun and mysterious as it was! We get to meet Ariadne (Riga’s mother), Mynta (her best-friend), Alchemy (her professor), Rhys (a very…err interesting and important character), and many other that go from Mynta’s family to the director of the Initiate and many more! But, you know, I’m not mentioning them all in case of spoilers, as always.

In the end, Oftomes has done it again! Initiate was a fantastic read! It was intriguing, mysterious and fun; a perfect page turner for sci-fi lovers like me! The characters were great, and the twists in the story were even better! I can’t wait for Initiate to be out in the wild and to hear what you guys think because really. . .you won’t see that one coming!

I received an ARC from OfTomes publishing.

This first book in a series is a well done take on a common setting/theme. An underground civilization surviving after some sort of apocalyptic event. An event that usually effects humans the most, putting them close to extinction.
In this story the underground city is in Antarctica with many tunnels and a scientific society called the Initiate helping everyone survive. I haven't read a story set in the Antarctic, and not many stories with an underground setting having scientist or scientific community running the organization. I really enjoy that aspect. I also liked that there was more to the story then just a controlling organization. The reasons for their actions felt realistic and reasonable even if they don't go about things reasonably.
The writing was good and well descriptive. It flowed well making for an easy read. The small details added here and there that would normally seem unnecessary were perfect here and really helped set the mood for certain scenes.
The characters all felt like individuals. They all had good personalities but for me Riga, the main character, was a little bland. She's a red head with a fiery personality, stubbornness, and bravery. I like her but I've seen this character personality trope dozens of times. In books, shows, and especially in anime. So she doesn't feel new but she was written in a way that made her feel real. I just hope that in future books she gains more to her personality then just having red hair and being stubborn. All in all Riga is a strong character.
Rys is an interesting character as you know nothing about him. You think you know but soon realize that the small details are just superficial things. He seems like there is much more to him and has a lot of depth to explore. Mynta is also a good character. A good friend and always has interesting make up choices. She was fun to read about.
The direction the story went in is what has sold me on wanting to continue with the series. I can't say what direction it went because that would be spoilers. But I found that I enjoyed the story more and more as it went along. Even the almost Insta-love type of relationship that developed. The two characters previously had feelings for each other, so I don't consider their budding relationship Insta-love. Just once they were starting something it happened a bit fast. But teenagers do everything fast so it doesn't really bother me too much.
There is a lot to look forward to with this series. Good set up for more books to come making me curious as to whats to come. Overall this is a solid first book in a series. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in reading it.

REVIEW - INITIATE by LAURA L. FOX
Spoiler free review!

Summary:
The only home Riga Garrison has ever known is the Tunnel, a subterranean research facility buried deep beneath Antarctica’s ice and snow. Yet, while a safe haven for the last outpost of humanity governed by the Initiate, it is also home to a secret so dark that they will risk anything to protect it.Surrounded by deceit and faced with exile to a frozen wasteland, Riga must defy not only the Initiate's top biologists and loyalists but also her own mother, in an attempt to unearth the truth.

Where do I even start? This book was absolutely fantastic!
The writing for me was an absolute stand out throughout this novel. I adored the tone, the language, and the story flowed beautifully. I can't help but admire the amount of time and research that must have gone into this wonderful story!
I mean, I sucked at Science in high school and was never overly interest in the subject anyway however found myself so complete enthralled by the ideas presented and explored in this story. I honestly found myself enjoying science! Believe me, that's something big.
The plot was fantastically woven and intricately planned and I found myself wanting to know more; learn more. There were so many unanswered questions at the end that I so desperately want closure for, and if that's not good writing, making a reader desire more, then I don't know what is! In addition to that, the underlying sense of fear, desperation and clear containment added to the intense feel of the book. Throughout the whole story I had this feeling in my gut that these characters needed to escape. That something bad was going on. And that helped me to connect with the characters more and hope for their survival.
Speaking of the characters, our lead, Riga Garrison, is honestly one of the best female protagonists I've read about in a long time! Not only was she super badass, but she displayed equal measurements of bravery, courage, compassion and curiosity. She was smart and intriguing, she was kind and witty. I thoroughly enjoyed reading from her point of view.
Rhys grew into a brave character in his own right. While there is much more to learn about him, I was interested in what we did see. There were a number of moments of clarity for his character that only endeared him to me as a reader more.
To sum it up, I adored this book. It was full of action, questions, intense scenes and pulse racing fear - all aspects I love in a novel. It's safe to say I loved this story and can't wait for book two!

This book was an edge of your seat thriller.... I loved it. I am not a huge science fiction reader and most of the ones I do pick up, get put down because they don't pique my interest, but damn this one got me. I loved how it was set underneath Antarctica, and that it was a post apocalypse time frame, and aliens. By the way, I TOTALLY ship Rhys and Riga!!!

I do have a lot of questions that I am hoping will be answered in the second book, and is her dad still alive? Are they going to encounter any bears or see more whales.

Thanks to OfTomes Punblishing for sending me an ARC to review. It was absolutely amazing and exhilarating!!

Without any hesitation I give this book five stars.
As I started to read this book I knew I was going to love this. But I didn't expect me to love it this much. I literally fell in love with this book right from the beginning. I could have just finished this book right away but because I had a lack of time I couldn't.
So the Initiate is about this civilization that lives deep beneath Antarctica's ice. And they call their home the Tunnel. The book is told from an aspect of Riga Garrison who has lived her whole life in the Tunnel and it's the only world she knows. Even if the Tunnel seems safe there are secrets that only the Initiate knows. But I don't tell anything else about the plot because I don't want to give away any details.
Riga is probably now one of my favorite character ever (maybe in top three). She's so strong woman and does never give up. She's such an inspiring character. And I think that she's just the right person to be the main character in this book. Riga is also easy character to identify. Mynta and Rhys, who are Riga's friends have also nice personalities and I love that Riga is so close with them especially with Mynta.
I'm so happy that I got an opportunity to read this book before it is released. Best way to describe my feelings to this book is "Omigod!" (as Riga would say). Such a perfect read! :)

Review of Initiate by Laura Fox.
Ohhhh gosh. Where. Do. I. Begin.
I seriously have no idea, because this was intense. First of all: I think this is one of the most realistic book I have ever read. It was like I was in the Tunnel. I felt and lived the Tunnel, I was afraid, I was anxious, I was curious and I was bold. I was everything Riga was.
Initiate is gorgeously written, fast paced and never boring, full in details and it will leave you speechless. I mean... The ending!!!!!!!! I'm not gonna spoil for you guys, but THE ENDING. THAT. ENDING. WAS. SPECTACULAR. Wonderfully created and developed! Not only the events were great but everything in general: the characters were so unique in this contest and the setting was amazing too. A little society living under the ice of the Antarctic, in this structure called the Tunnel were the Initiate keep everything under control (or at least tries to...). Loved it. I mean, I cannot even fully express how I feel about this book. It was simply perfectly perfect. Nothing more and nothing less.
Absolutely a 5/5 stars read.

Oh my god what can I say. When I agreed to review this I was a bit unsure as I haven't really read anything like this before in my life. Boy was I blown away. Not only is Laura's writing easy to read but the flow in which she does so is amazing. From the get go this book gripped me and did not let me go. The world building was on point and the whole plot line dos not let me down once. The story itself was amazing and something I had never really read before which was perfect for me as I am always looking for something new. Laura you have a winner on your hands here and I can't wait to see what comes next. Aghhhhhh I want more now lol. If I could give this 50/5 stars I would. I thoroughly thoroughly enjoyed this read. I will update a bit more on the plot when the book has been released but for now add it to your TBR list and you will be sorry if you miss it. #VeryHappyReader

PEOPLE, there's a lot of dystopian/ sci-fi novels on this earth but this is on the top of them. This book was simply perfection and I'll tell tot why:
1*THE PLOT: COME ON the few people left on earth living under the ice This is SO original. Most of the "Dystopian" novels are revolving about "The earth will end up by the hands of Aliens or the global warming or nuclear radiation and people will live in the space or in a dark city" but in a surprising way This book contains a lot of these things but the author combined them together perfectly. It's fastly passed book and many plot twists so don't read it before sleeping because You won't get any sleep, You'll just keep reading.....The rest of the review is here

I can safely say that Oftomes Publishing have found another gem to add to their glorious collection. As one of the first one hundred people to read this book for review, I was blown away by this debut novel. The friendships and relationships between these characters are fresh and offer a fresher perspective of them and the issues in this sci-fi novel are current and surprisingly, very likely to happen.

And now the wait for book 2 begins!

4.5/5 Thank you Oftomes for the ARC copy of this amazing novel. It started a little slow, but Riga proved to be a compelling main character and her friends Rhys and Mynta great secondary ones to support her quest for truth. By the end, I really couldn't put it down. And now I really want book 2. Fox will be an author to watch for. Her storytelling skills will take her far for sure.

I received an ARC from OfTomes publishing in exchange of a honest review.

I loved the synopsis and I was really happy to get the opportunity to read the ARC.
The story is different of anything I have read before. I loved that the book takes place in Antartica, all the characters and the plot.
It was kind of slow at the beginning, but then as I've got more into the book, I just couldn't stop reading. I would have finished earlier, but life got in the way and it slowed me down..
Riga is a strong character! I loved her attitude, her actions and her friends. I definetly identify myself with her.
Every turned page contained a new mistery and a new revelation.
Mynta and Rhys are awesome and they were so well built. I need to read more about their adventures pretty soon! I highly recommend this book.
I'm so excited to see what will happen on the second book. The ending makes you so curious and with a few questions. I've a few guesses tho.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Summary

A dystopian, sci-fi which will send a chill down your spine, Initiate is beautifully written and filled with intricate detail and devious secrets. There is mystery, friendship, betrayal; not to mention a touch of romance which is one of the more realistic portrayals of a relationship beginning I’ve seen in a while (no insta-love here).

Initiate follows Riga, a girl who has spent her entire life living in the Tunnel, an underground outpost beneath Antarctica, as her life is turned upside down, following the sighting of a whale, something she and her best friend Mynta thought long-extinct. From there they start to unravel a conspiracy which will tear them apart.

Plot

I was hooked from the start and, despite all the intricate detail and setting up, Initiate was not a slow read in the slightest. I tore through the pages as the mystery gradually revealed itself and we got to see more of the characters. The plot itself was interesting. While the general themes were something I’ve seen before; the setting, characterisation and reveals made it an incredibly unique read.

The only issue I could find with the plot itself was with what type of whale it actually was. One moment it’s identical to one type of whale; the next they’ve decided it’s another type. This took me out of the story and I did spend a while going back and forth trying to work out which was correct before deciding to just continue. It didn’t really matter in the long-run, just confused me a bit while I was reading. That being said, I did love the use of marine biology in this book – it definitely grounded it and made the story a lot more realistic, as applying a level of science usually does.

Characters

Riga, Rhys and Mynta are fantastic characters. Each one is clearly defined and so very easy to imagine. As the story is told from Riga’s perspective, we got to see a lot more of her and by the end of the book, it felt like I was living in the world and seeing everything through her eyes rather than just on a page. I really enjoyed her relationships with both Rhys and Mynta, although was a little disappointed that we didn’t get more of the three of them together. Mynta disappears a bit in the second half of the book, while Rhys is barely there in the first. Needless to say, however, both Mynta and Rhys were well-developed and I enjoyed reading about both. I just hope we get to see more of Mynta in the second book.

Aside from them, we don’t get to see too much of the other people living in the Tunnel. There are a few minor characters, including Alchemy, a teacher who really should be fired, but it is Riga’s mother who we see the most of. I did have a light niggling issue with the fact that of the two mothers represented in this book, the stay-at-home mum was depicted as a perfect mother while the working one was pretty terrible at it. However, the threat of the novel does explain Riga’s mother’s actions in part and you do get a sense that she cares about her daughter.

World/Setting

From characters to setting – Fox can do it all. The writing of this book is phenomenal and so it only makes sense that the world Fox has created beneath the ice mirrors that brilliance. I loved the whole concept of the Tunnel – from the Atrium, to the Woolery, to the Luging tunnels. Everything about it worked and made sense given the circumstances. It wasn’t just there as a place for the book to occur either; the Tunnel was part of the story and parts of it helped to develop characters and deliver on plot. How it was described was easily one of my favourite things about Initiate.

However, as amazing as the setting it, some parts did not quite add up for me. The time since people started living in the Tunnel to the story taking place is around 35 years; so everyone 40 or older would have at least some memories of life beforehand and why they had to move into the Tunnel in the first place, including both of Riga’s parents and Mynta’s parents. I could just be missing something, but I feel like the big secret of the novel doesn’t quite add up with who it is being kept secret from and some of the consequences which follow. I may be missing something, but this did confuse me at times.

Final thoughts

I started reading Initiate with very little idea of what it was about, by the end I was curious for more. While there were a few things which did confuse me a bit, the novel, on the whole, was incredibly well written and researched. The world is crafted so well I could nearly feel the cold while reading and the characters are brought to life beautifully. I cannot wait for the next book in this series and, if the preview of it is anything to go by, it is going to be good.

* I received a proof of this book from the publisher. This in no way affected my opinion of the book.

Initiate is set in a world where humanity has retreated below the ice sheets of Antarctica as the land above is completely inhabitable. Riga Garrison is a mere member of this restricted society until she sees a whale. An animal once thought to be extinct. She begins to question the very institute that controls her life and realises that everything isn't as it seems.

I think a tricky thing is with books with these hidden societies underground is that there's so many of them . You'd have to sift through a lot to get to the ones you'll truly enjoy. I'm not saying Initiate is a bad book. I actually quite liked this. The premise of this story reminds me of our current environmental situation, a bit of a cautionary tale, it would seem to us.

Initiate is quite inventive in the world it's created in. While I thought it was very stereotypical at first, it had my interest, especially when Rigs encounters the whale which triggers off a reaction she could've never expected. She finds herself on the run and having to a make a life-changing decision which could change everything. She handles things quite maturely and her development was enjoyable.

Her love interest is ... okay, I guess. While I never found myself swooning over them, they made sense to be together but I think it would've worked much better if they were already together before the start of the novel.

When the big plot twist and the secret is revealed about the world above I was very confused. I think it may be due to the fact I had a very different impression of how this book was going to go because it's a complete 180 to what I had expected. And I think because of that, I'm quite intrigued with how this story will carry on.  Because I actually have no idea what to expect!

The biggest issue I had was pacing. I think the events happened quite quickly which meant there wasn't much suspense, in my opinion. And there could've been better development of what the Initiate actually is because they didn't really come across as threatening as they could've been.

Overall, as I said before, Initiate is imaginative and in a world which has captured my attention. Around 3/4 of the way, my interest did drop but the ending and the preview of Book Two have certainly made me want to keep track of this series.

It has taken me a long time to even start this review. Not because I had nothing to say but because I truly don’t know how to portray how magnificent this book is.

Firstly, I want to say a quick thank you to OfTomes publishing for sending me an eARC of Initiate, simply put; I loved every second.

Laura is a wizard of Sci-fi. Seriously her setting; her plot; her characters… oh boy. I was in awe.

As soon as I read the first sentence I was hooked and couldn’t stop reading, I was completely and fully immersed in the world of Initiate from the get go. Even after turning the last page it wouldn’t let me go. I NEED MORE!

I always love a character driven story and Laura didn’t disappoint. Her characters were funny, emotional; and the perfect friends. I felt like I was reading genuine people, not fictional characters. To quote Riga… Omigod, this book was absolutely amazing! Riga is one of my favourite females of YA. She is so loyal, loving, independent, and never afraid to fight for the answers she wants. Laura manages to show Riga character development amazingly and the few glances into her past that we get are wonderful in helping us get to know Riga even better! Riga and Mynta’s friendship is so genuine and refreshing; they are total opposites but seem to fit as friends perfectly.

Initiate is so well written, Laura’s writing is so beautiful and whimsical. I was instantly in love. I’ve never read anything situated in Antarctica and I adored that aspect. It was so new and refreshing. Laura’s attention to detail blew me away. She was able to make Riga’s world of ice sound so beautiful. I could see everything perfectly, all of the glory right there as if I was standing in the tunnels with the characters.

Initiate is a very fast, action packed read and it works so well. The suspense throughout had me on the edge of my seat, literally, I was gasping at every other page, I was crying, laughing and almost screaming at points.

This book was better than anything I could have dreamed. It left me breathless and begging for more. Laura L. Fox you truly are a fantastic author! Undoubtedly a 5 STAR read; I’d give more if I could!

You NEED to keep your eyes out for this book when it hits shelves on the 15th of November.
