Mike Carey was born in Liverpool in 1959. He worked as a teacher for fifteen years, before starting to write comics. When he started to receive regular commissions from DC Comics, he gave up the day job.

Since then, he has worked for both DC and Marvel Comics, writing storylines for some of the world's most iconic characters, including X-MEN, FANTASTIC FOUR, LUCIFER and HELLBLAZER. His original screenplay FROST FLOWERS is currently being filmed. Mike has also adapted Neil Gaiman's acclaimed NEVERWHERE into comics.

Somehow, Mike finds time amongst all of this to live with his wife and children in North London. You can read his blog at www.mikecarey.net.

Oooh yes, Age of X: Alpha #1, precious! A twisted little jewel, yesss… full of broken X-Men, hiding, fighting, surviving in a world where everything has gone wrong. No schools, no dreams, no Professor whispers in their ears. Just fear… and fire… and lovely, lovely madness.

Each story in the book shows us different bits of the world, shattered pieces of a mirror. We sees the lizard-boy (Chamber? Tsk, what a mess), the pretty metal girl with no smiles (Magneto’s brat, yes), the Nightcrawler—meaner, sharper than before. Ohhh and the blindfold girl… she knows things, nasty quiet things, like us she does.

So many secrets, yess, so many masks and false names. Mutants hiding like us, hunted like us! Makes our heart thump-thump, it does. The writing is dark, mysterious—like a riddle with teeth. The art? Delicious! Dirty, tense, like war is breathing down your neck.

5 out of 5 stars, precious! We wants more. We needs more. A world where everyone is broken, twisted, and dangerous? Yesss… that’s our kind of place. We’ll read it again, and whisper to the pages. It’s ours now.

I normally love Carey's writing, but nothing about this story seems original. Just another alternate universe X-Men story where everything goes wrong. Maybe it'll get better, but doesn't seem very interesting from this introduction.

2nd read: I read this again recently, and it's better than I remember. I suppose the inevitable and inescapable question remains how did we get here in-story? I believe I read this after Age of X-Man, and it's no worse than that crossover idea. Carey does have a good voice for X-Men characters, though these are alternate reality versions, obviously. Recommended for fans of alternate reality apocalyptic scenarios.
