When Family Travel magazine sponsors a Mother of the Year contest with a trip to Paris and a shopping spree as the prize, the response is overwhelming! Kate began reading romance in 1979 when she picked up a copy of Kathleen Woodiwiss's Ashes in the Wind. She read the book from cover to cover in one very long night and was immediately hooked on the genre.
The next morning, she was standing at the door to her local Waldenbooks and when they opened, she hurried inside and asked for everything else written by Woodiwiss. At the same time, she found wonderful books by Rosemary Rogers, Laurie McBain, and Jennifer Blake.
Nearly 10 years later, while working as an advertising copywriter, Kate decided to try writing a romance of her own. After a history of interesting jobs in teaching, retailing, advertising, and nonprofit work, she was determined to add romance author to that list.
After numerous failed attempts over three years, Kate decided to forget writing historical romance and turned to category romance. Six months later, her first story, A Vagabond Heart, was finished. A year later, Harlequin bought the book after Kate won the national 1992 Harlequin Temptation contest. The book was published in 1993 as Indecent Exposure.
Her dream of adding romance writer to her resume came true and in December of 1993 she turned off her alarm clock, shredded her pantyhose, and became a full-time writer.
Since then, Kate has written numerous books for Temptation, Weddings by DeWilde, Harlequin anthologies, Love and Laughter, and Duets. Her new Duet, Three Babies and a Bargain (July 2000) will be her 24th project for Harlequin and All Through the Night (August 2000), a Temptation Blaze, will mark her 25th.
Kate lives in southeastern Wisconsin in a cozy little house in a picturesque village. Two cats also live with her—Tansing, a grumpy Himalayan, and Tibriz, a tortie Persian mix that she rescued from an animal shelter. She enjoys gardening, golf, reading, and romantic movies.
First review of 2013...ugh...Firstly, the whole premise of the book centers around a competition for "Mother of the Year" where our winner gets a trip to Paris and some other stuff...
First up, "Romancing Roaxanne" - Roxanne's DH left her for a muscled, female wrestler (aka "The Velvet Hammer"). She finds herself crying, daily in the closet outside which her absolutely adorable "little man" (Danny-one of her four children who are all under 5!) waits for her. It's gut-enchantingly cute, btw. What I liked best about this story was the strength of the heroine, Roxanne. If anyone deserved to curl into a ball and feel miserable, it was her, and she did but she didn't let it run her life. She grieved, got angry and allowed herself to continue living. I also enjoyed the secondary characters especially her sister, Renee, the only one who wasn't completely selfish by entering her sister in the competition. The others had their reasons, though. What of our hero, you ask? Oh, well he was simply too darn good to be true. Hot, single, a little jerky in the beginning and fell head over heels in love with Roxy AND her kidlets. What's not to love? Truth be told, I kinda wish there was a follow-up story where the ex gets what's coming him, but I'll just play that out in my mind.
Next is "Daddy Come Lately" - This was my least favorite of the stories. Why? 'Cause the heroine, Jody, was an idiot who kept secret the existence of the heroes twin sons, Benjamin and Jeremy (aka Ben and Jerry), for OVER FOUR YEARS. Ok. Sure. He was off to La La Land and all, but surely sometime in FOUR YEARS you coulda called the guy?? I know her folks died and all, but still...this is NOT one of those times when I can understand the keeping quiet about the kids. All of that aside, the author just seemed like she had a fully developed story that she was asked to cut to fit into this book. Maybe it's just me. I will say that, again, the secondary characters were a hoot in this one. The kids made this story for me.
And finally, "Love is in the Air" - Our heroine is a tomboy pilot (Jody was a tomboy rancher, btw) with a mother and grandma who make the story work for me. I will say that Wade was my favorite of the heroes. She's stubborn and in denial. He's hot and in lust/love. They're both pilots. It's a win-win for me. It reminds me a lot of another series of books by Shalvis with pilots-I wonder if it's at all related? This story is better developed than the other two and the characters are more likable to me.
All in all? It was a quick, fun read...but I am so glad I got it from my local public library.
Family Voyager magazine sponsors a contest for "Mother of the Year" and there are some interesting finalists.
"Romancing Roxanne" by Hoffman - Roxanne Perry has been nominated by her sister. She has 4 children she's trying to raise after her husband walks out. When the local radio station interviews her, the owner thinks she'd be great for his wealthy son.
"Daddy Come Lately" by Jacqueline Diamond. When the magazine editor realizes one of the contestants is his old flame from his home town and has twin boys, he goes back to check her out and discovers he's the dad!
"Love is in the Air" by Jill Shalvis. Kylie Birmingham's mom submits herself and puts Kylie in the hot seat. She's trying to keep her dad's airport running. Pilot Wade McKinnon has made good and he wants to be part of the airport and Kylie's life.
"Paris is always a good idea." - Audrey Hepburn, as Sabrina Fairchild in Sabrina
Ahhh, Paris!! The most romantic city in the world. The sites, the lights, the sounds, the romance. It's where people come to fall in love.
This trio of stories is about a magazine, Family Voyager, sponsoring a Mother of the Year contest, with a trip to Paris!! There are 10 finalists, the book focuses on 3, though through the book you actually meet 5 of them.
The first finalist Roxanne Perry a single mother of four. The second finalist is Texas born and bred single mom of twins Jody Reilly. The third finalist Daisy Birmingham who enters to win for her daughter Kylie Birmingham (who the store is about).
This book is a quick read with the three stories being light and fun.
