A friend (MH) sent me this book in a box of books.

This book begs the question: "do we ever really know someone else?" Paul, Laura, and the Manning parents all viewed Jerry differently.

I liked the Russell family--once we got to know them. Paul seemed a bit off-putting at first, but as we got to know him better, I began to like him better.

I feel a bit like Laura in that all it takes for me to do something is for someone to tell me "you can't" and I'm determined to prove them wrong. She's pretty brave to uproot herself and her children to go learn her husband's business.

Possible trigger warnings for readers: abusive relationship, controlling relationships, death of a parent, custody battle.

I enjoyed this book and the way Laura moved to another town to start over and pushed Paul to help her learn the job. I like the way she treated her inlaws with respect and fairness.

"This is the third book that takes the reader to the fictional small Texas town of Rosewood and it's an excellent portrayal of a single parent trying to make a new life for herself and her children. Laura is determined to learn the ins and outs of flipping houses; however, reading this book in 2009, after the great housing bubble burst, it's hard to feel sympathy for realtors or real estate agents or even mortgage brokers.

Anyhow, Laura is left with little funding of her own after her verbally abusive husband Jerry dies, so she packs up her kids (ages 13 and 10) and moves to Rosewood, where she meets Paul, her late husband's friend and business partner. The citizens of this Christian utopia adopt her as one of their own but Laura still harbors vague fears of losing everything.

Her overbearing, social climbing in-laws move to Rosewood, ostensibly to be near their grandchildren, but their motive is more sinister: they file for sole custody. This subplot is why the story of Ruth and Naomi doesn't apply well to Winn's novel: Naomi is an older woman who leads Ruth to God. In the book, Laura's mother in law Meredith isn't a woman of God; she's a materialistic, self-centered, social climbing shrew. Sorry, but there's really no comparison.

Winn, however, does handle the subject of spousal abuse well. Having lived in a marriage like that, I identified strongly with Laura's feelings at several points in the story. Winn's characters are, for the most part, realistic and human. Noah and Grace Brady (from Winn's other novel "Promise of Grace") show up briefly as minor characters. All in all, Rosewood is a nice place to visit and re-visit."

I took a trip to Rosewood, Texas with new widow, Laura Manning. Laura finds herself in a dreadful position of still being controlled by her abusive husband from the grave. In order to seek freedom for herself and her two children, Laura travels to Rosewood to learn her deceased husband's business.

Laura just wants to find herself and provide for her family. Laura's husband left all control to his business partner, Paul Russell. Paul is confused by a widow who doesn't seem to mourn her husbands passing. As she insists on learning the trade, Laura shows Paul a different side to her that makes him wonder if he knew his business partner as well as he thought he had.

There are custody fights, estranged families and lessons to be learned in this excellent romantic tale. Give it a read.

This book was really cute. I almost didn't read because books with the same kind of premise are usually not my cup of tea but I am glad I did. I liked the transformation from Paul believing that Laura was incompetent to both raise her children and help with the business to him realizing that she is very competent at both. I also appreciated that their romance was not a whirlwind but that the characters got to know each other over a good period of time before there really was a romance.

Very nice story about a mother recovering from the death of her abusive husband, who moves her children from the big city to a small town to start over. Her children are hurting from the loss of their dad and need to be surrounded with friends and loving people. She rediscovers her faith and the importance of family as she is welcomed with open arms. As she begins to heal, she finds new strength, a job she loves and a love she never thought she'd feel again. A great read!

This was my first Love Inspiried book. My young teen wants to read adult romances, but I'm not interested in supplying her with any bodice-rippers. This was a nice romantic love story with believable characters but no heaving bosom/throbbing manhood stuff. In fact, a very acceptable relationship. She can have these.

Laura Manning's husband Jerry left her with an executor for the estate and the children but nothing for her. Paul was his business partner and now in charge of everything in their lives. Could Laura deal with control going from Jerry to Paul?

Enjoyed curling up to read this Hallmark story and get my mind off of life. Just a simple, obvious, but heartwarming storyline that leaves you smiling at the end.
