This comprehensive, research-based introduction to childhood behavior disorders provides a sensitive and thorough examination of the field by covering its central issues, theoretical and methodological underpinnings, and by providing descriptions and discussions of numerous disorders. Rich with illustrations and examples, it highlights the newest areas of research and clinical work, stressing supported treatments and the prevention of behavior problems of youth. Now titled Abnormal Psychology of Childhood and Adolescence, (previously titled Behavior Disorders of Childhood ), this 7th edition continues to be the model text in the field.
This book delves into the world of disorders specifically evident in childhood and adolescence (developmental psychopathology). A much-needed topic to write upon, as many disorder symptoms are different in children/adolescents as compared to adults, which can lead to under-treatment or the wrong treatments. The DSM is also often involved in this discussion, too, mainly on the question whether there need to be separate lists for children’s/adolescents’ disorder symptoms next to the ‘default’ ones for adults.
Anyhow, moving on. Abnormal Child and Adolescent Psychology is a solid introduction to child and adolescent disorders, and strives not only to give an overview of these disorders in general, but also to provide information on the underlying theories and/or models, and methods of research. In doing this, it gives the reader a very thorough overview of the field, while also providing them with a good book of reference on childhood/youth disorders.
This book contains a large selection of topics, which include: the developmental psychopathology perspective, biological and environmental contexts, research, classification plus assessment and intervention, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, conduct problems, ADHD, language and learning disabilities, mental retardation/intellectual disabilities, pervasive developmental disorders and schizophrenia, disorders of basic physical functions, physiological factors affecting medical conditions, and, last but not least, evolving concerns for youth.
Abnormal Child and Adolescent Psychology is certainly a recommendation for anyone in the developmental psychopathology/psychology field or doing clinical psychology geared towards children, and for people who are interested in youth disorders (though some knowledge of behavioural studies and research is required). It’s a solid book, and can easily be used as reference.

An extremely useful text that provides an in depth overview of different mental illnesses and their prevalence in children and adolescents. The text offers explanation of each illness as well as explains the affects, causes and possible interventions.
It is definitely a useful text to those studying psychology, or just wanting to know more about the topic.
This is my first foray into child pysc and I am finding it fascinating. The only thing that I feel could make this text easier to digest is to actually give the defintions of the key words in the chapter summaries. I think that would make the text a little more "user friendly" and would help considerably with studying.
It was a pretty good textbook. It had some editing issues (typos or other errors that weren't corrected). Some chapters felt really long, but overall, it was a good presentation/collection of relevant content.
