The 20th Century saw an unprecedented period of growth in all aspects of science and technology. The biggest discoveries came from Quantum theory and relativity, but there were more than those two ideas percolating at the time.

Science Year By Year is an exploration of those massive leaps and small improvements in science and technology. Each year is covered by at least a page of events. For example, let’s look at 1905. The page opens with Albert Einstein, an unknown Swiss Patent Office Clerk, and his Theory of Relativity. There is a bit called a “glance at the past” that examines the Michelson-Morley Experiment and how it led to the discovery of the absence of the Luminiferous Ether. In Biology, Chromosomes were found to influence heredity. Earth Science covers a meteorite that left a crater. Safety glass was developed for car windshields. Fritz Schaudinn and colleague Erich Hoffmann discovered the cause of Syphilis. The Tyrannosaurus Rex was named by Henry Osborn. The first U-boat set sail. The first blood transfusion was performed. Finally, Hiram Maxim invented the silencer for a machine gun.

The book contains images of the ideas it discusses. The text included is written as though the events are happening in the present, so it may be a collection of old newspaper articles.

I enjoyed the book. Thanks for reading my review, and see you next time.

This is a really fun book to read or even just flip through. For each year from 1900 to 1999 two pages are devoted to scientific inventions or breakthroughs with a summarizing paragraph. Even though most of the entries were known to me it was good to see the advancement of science in the last century.
