Griffin Jude Payne is the last U.S. Marine. He's determined to take down the U.N. and send their twisted dream of a global utopia back to hell where it belongs. After assassinating the Prime Minister, he is captured and exiled off-planet. His enemy's widow boards the same ship, presenting Griffin with a unique opportunity--Prudence is his ticket back to Earth. With her as his hostage, he intends to gather the exiled residents of Asteria, commandeer a ship, and head back to reclaim Earth for all people. Prudence has no intention of returning to Earth now that she's escaped. She wants Griffin to join her in making a new life together on Asteria. As they struggle to survive on the hostile planet, he's blindsided by her tenacious bravery and sweet sensuality until he's no longer sure if she's his hostage, or if he's hers.

Overall Opinion: This was good for a freebie! I've decided that I like the survival type romances and this was just that. It also had some sci-fi aspects to it too that was fun to step out my box during (what's felt like) a book funk I've been in lately. I'm still not entirely sold on the sci-fi sub genre of romance, but I think this worked because the h was an alien but was extremely humanoid and didn't have much different about her other than a "gift" she gives her mate and her eye color. If it's still free, I'd definitely recommend you get it!

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Prudence and Griffin's story. Prudence's husband has had the UN take over the world and sent unwanted people to another planet to create a utopian Earth. Griffin knows he needs to get to his brother on the other planet and he's going to kill two birds with one stone with killing Prudence's husband and getting himself exiled. What they don't know is that they will meet on the spacecraft on the way to the planet where Prudence is running away and he might be able to use him to further his cause. There are some suspenseful moments, some sexy times, and some sweet moments...and they get a HFN ending.

Point Of View (POV): This alternated between focusing on Prudence and Griffin in 3rd person narrative.

Overall Pace of Story: Alright. I did skim some at the end but otherwise I thought it did flow well otherwise.

Instalove: No, they take a while to develop stronger feelings (but in consideration of actual time, I think it did move quickly)

H (Hero) rating: 3.5 stars. Griffin. I liked him, but his martyr behavior sometimes got a little old.

h (heroine) rating: 4 stars. Prudence. I liked her. I appreciated her strength and strong moral compass.

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull:Yes

Heat level: Hot. They have some hot tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) drama: Yes

Sex scene with OW or OM: Yes

Cheating: No

Separation: No

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This had a cute ending but I would call it a HFN ending

Safety: This one is probably Safe with exception for most safety gang readers depending on personal preferences.

Blending of sci-fi, dystopian, and military romance is guaranteed to grab my attention and, in this case, provide a rousing-good story. This was a new to me author and I will definitely be on the hunt to see if she wrote more like this one.

Griffith Jude Payne is the last US Marine. Literally. The UN has taken over rule of the planet and disbanded countries and their militaries in the effort to achieve world peace and prosperity. Unfortunately, few know the lengths to which the UN led by the new Prime Minister and his family would go to to bring it about. Griff does. He watched the UN destroy his whole base and before that he saw the destruction and deportation of every person who wasn't perfect or disagreed with the take overs. Thousands were sent to the harsh planet Asteria six months away by space ship. Griffin's brother was one of them all because he was a little different. Griffin executes a daring plan to save his brother and make up for his past mistakes.

Prudence watched the Marine shoot her husband and thought here was a hero only to see that he didn't finish the job and left things worse than before. Now she is faced with the sadistic Randolf who wants her for her alien power to give the gift of persuasion to her mate. She is determined to escape and sets in motion her plans to slip away to the colony world of Asteria and become a pioneer far from those who would abuse and exploit her. Randolf will never look for her there.

Fate puts Griffin and Prudence on the same ship and has them crash land together. He mistrusts her, the wife of his enemy, and she mistrusts him, a brute. But a harsh planet has a way of making people work together if they want to survive. Griff must survive, find his brother, and then go back to earth and finish the job he started to liberate people from the regime that allows no freedom. Somewhere along the way, things get complicated when the two begin to understand and care for each other.

This story was an exciting blend of suspense, action, survival, and passion. The author created an interesting background and colorful alien setting. I enjoyed the characters and their opposite way of thinking. It was an enemies to lovers type of situation as they don't like or trust each other at first. The dual trouble between surviving the harsh planet and avoiding the UN and Randolf was exciting, but the internal struggles of Griff getting past his PTSD and survivor's guilt and Pru healing from the abuse she had undergone made it deeper than I expected. I appreciated this aspect of the layers for this story.

The romance is a slow build on the relationship and somewhat slow on the attraction as Griffin had to be careful with Prudence because she had been abused. He doesn't know this at first, but reads the situation well anyway. They came together one scene after another. Things got scorching hot when Griffin unleashed the passionate woman inside Pru when she believed herself to be frigid and ugly after her dead husband and his brother got through messing with her head. Griffin really was her hero in more ways than one.

All in all, this was a great sci-fi romance with a good blend of action and passion to leave me satisfied. I would definitely recommend it.

I received this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

Highly Recommend

Normally science fiction romance books deal with a lot of sex and woman that need saved by big hunking males. Well the heroine in the book can save herself! Refreshing to say the least. The main female character is Prudence and she despite a horrid marriage, has grit. The main male Character, Griffin, is a soldier suffering from the tragedy of war, and how he needs to make things right for humanity. Wow, this was a one roller coaster ride, and what the characters thought was the truth was revealed to be a different reality. There are plenty of sexy times but they actually fit into the context of the plot and character development. This isn’t an ‘earthgirls’ are easy type of book. You have two characters suffering from PTSD.
This book had a few plot problems one being Prudence defending her rapist as not being that bad of a guy in his utopian world view. This actually had me taking a star away as this came up several times, which was a conflict with some of the plot dynamics.
Despite this being a science fiction romance the characters are very relatable and the plot is one that doesn’t try to be over futuristic. It actually is a future that could happen.
I do highly recommend this book, as I This review it’s available on kindle unlimited which is how I read it.

Seriously, omg this book was awesome. That doesn't sound like much, but more of a review will eventually go here.
To the people who like Gann, this had me thinking of it a few times. It isn't as epic like Gann is, but for me, it reminds me more of it than other rec's I got for "If you liked The Last Hour of Gann read this book."
I want to say everything I'm thinking, but I have massive biblio-high/book hangover and can only think *squee, omgomg I loved this book!* So, I'm sorry for the lack of eloquence....

I loved this story! It mixes futuristic, sci-fi, and romance together. The descriptions of every portion of the story were spot on. I could easily picture everything as I read. Every character was well-fleshed out and the secondary ones added their own bit to the story whether it was extra suspense or a touch of humor. Instead of having Griff’s PTSD be magically healed by a woman’s love, his way toward accepting the fact that he needed help was ushered along because of it. Each interaction between Griff and Pru was intensely hot and their chemistry was practically explosive. I would definitely recommend this story and could easily see myself reading it again.

I Loved This Book!

This was such a great story! I'm really into character development and some semblance of them being "real" (even if the Heroine is half-human/half-Lythonian...and the story takes place largely on the planet Asteria). When the characters feel real, I care about them and what they are going through. What these characters, especially Griffin and Prudence, went through kept me on the edge of my proverbial seat!

The story has lots of action and adventure, a lot of danger and violence, and some rather steamy love scenes (makes me wanna run out and learn how to play poker...read the book and you'll get it). I must admit I was a little thrown by the M/M relationships in the story, but they gave so much to the story. It's such an awesome read!

There are so many elements about this story that I absolutely love. Falling in love with the person you though was your enemy. The last person you thought would be your ally. The last person you thought you could ever trust. All while fighting a system under a new regime of greed. The Last Marine is one of those amazing romances that sticks with you for days. It's not cookie-cutter romance and I think that's what I love about it most. Cara Crescent's debut novel is just the first scoop of a delicious bowl of ice cream. I can't wait for more!

A SOLID 3.5 STARS!
I've always adored this genre, and sometimes, a good damsel in distress doesn't bother me, especially when she grows from helplessness to strong independence. A good pick-me-up for a weekday night.

The story was easy, straightforward, a little predictable with a dash of insta-attraction, but still bearable. GRIFFIN was a stereotypical poster boy for what I assume a Marines or classic military man would be like - responsible, testosterone overload and well, technically honorable, and yes, good with weapons or combat (minus the ARROGANCE and ALPHAHOLE attitude). That's part of what made his character respectable and personally, charming. Honorability and guilt = suicide mission, and that's what GRIFFIN is, a ticking time bomb who is ready to wash away his sins and mistake by trying to right a wrong of his past. Until he meets Prudence, he never had qualms about dying, but leaving the woman he's starting to catch feelings for? That's a hard no.

PRUDENCE was lovely, I mean maybe in the beginning she screamed a little TSTL, but I get it...she was trying to run away from an abusive match after her last one, and getting away from the enemy beats worrying about the future when push comes to shove. Masochist that I am, I would have loved it had their attraction been dragged out in order to build the chemistry before colliding with a bang. Prudence's heritage seemed interesting, though it seemed her only purpose was to be able to grant her mate special "gifts" that would benefit him or her. Would have been great if that had been expanded on.

OVERALL, don't expect much. The story had potential if only it was a slow burn, better developed and with a proper world building. Low intensity romance, high on the snuggly. Still enjoyable though! Always a YES to protective, honorable and responsible male leads.

The UN have been currupted and now they are exiling "undesirables" off world. After the military of all countries have been stood down in favour of the Un's Blue Helmets, Griffith Jude Payne is the last US Marine. He can't stand by and watch as the new Minister wreaks further havoc. He kills him in full view of the world, hoping to get his time in court. But the Minister's family have other plans.

Prudence hated her husband and now that her odious brother in law has her in his sights, she needs to get off world, fast! When she makes her escape, she finds herself sharing pod-space with the unlikeliest person, Griffin! Griffin sees another side to Pru after their ride is attacked and she goes beynd his expectations for who he sees as a pretty puppet.

Asteria is like the wild west in some ways. Pretty much lawless, settlements bartering goods but one big bonus- no heavy presence of Blue Helmets. Griffin has another reason to get to Asteria, he wants to find his brother. He doesn't even know if he is alive.

Great layering of PTSD, survivors guilt, sexual assault and they are all handled very delicately. There may be triggers for some readers. Great read, super characters and I'm hoping for more!

This is the book that got me hooked on sci-fi romance. What I love most about Cara Crescent's books is that they are genre-bending. If you love romance, you'll love this book. If you love sci-fi, you'll love this book.

Earth has gone utopia under Alfred Parnell. His ability to persuade others has resulted in the world governments, and their militaries, uniting under him into the United Nations. Now all military are the Blue Helmets, all people living happy, clean, and free.

But Griffin Jude Payne knows this is all a lie. As a U.S. Marine, the last Marine, he has been involved in removing undesirables from the Earth, putting them in rockets to the planet of Asteria. The old, the sick, those who don’t agree with the Parnell government all go to the ultimate prison off-world.

He knows how ruthless Parnell is, he’s not blinded by the man’s persuasion, especially not after the U.N. fragged the base where Griffin lived and worked. Now he knows there’s only one way to stop what is happening—kill Alfred Parnell.

But that didn’t stop it. Parnell’s death just got him caught and convicted and sent to Asteria.
In the ship with him, in the escape pod when the ship caught fire, is Prudence Angelica Parnell, the alien wife of the late Alfred Parnell. When they land on Asteria, she takes off across the hostile desert to find a way to start a new life and Griffin follows her to help her. His aim is to get her settled, find his brother, and go back to Earth to end the false utopia that her husband had built up.
But Angel is the hitch in that plan, everything about her screams sensuality and Griffin’s body keeps telling him that she’s “the one”. Try as both might, they are drawn to each other and when they do find Griffin’s brother, the choice of what to do looks like it may just have to change.
The Last Marine is a very good combination of science fiction and romance. Griffin is the usual big, strong, determined Marine, Angel is the soft yet tough woman who is destined to turn his heart. While the love story is pretty much typical romance fair, the strength of the characters carries the storyline well and makes you want to root for the couple, even if Griffin’s plan to go back and start the war would pull them apart.

There is one caution: she goes into detail about some of the sick things Parnell and his brother do to gain and keep control of Earth. It’s not pretty and it can be disturbing. The fact that Cara Cresent doesn’t shy away from those things gives the reader the reasons to dislike the utopia.

The Last Marine is a lovely read.

I "had" to read this because I was judging a contest. I wasn't happy about it being an "extra" book, but I was pleasantly surprised when I was pulled into the beginning. In fact, I stole time from other activities to read it. Sometimes I thought the female character wasn't "with the program", but I kept reading and was rewarded. I particularly liked how the more pages you read, you get tidbits of back story that you hadn't known you wanted.

Utopia turns dystopian when the UN takes over the world. The last marine alive kills the prime minister in an attempt to rectify the situation. Good read in which both the hero and heroine are strong.
