Continuing the digital-exclusive tie-in to BioWare’s celebrated game series, from the lead writer of Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II!
The mystery of King Maric’s fate deepens as Alistair, Isabela, and Varric encounter the witch who rescued Maric from an Antivan prison. But why did she help him, and where is he now?
• Story by Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II lead writer David Gaider!
• An essential companion to the games, revealing one of the series’ mysteries!
David Gaider lives in Edmonton, Alberta, and has worked for video game developer BioWare since 1999. He is the lead writer on the upcoming Dragon Age: Origins role-playing game and has previously worked on such titles as Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Neverwinter Nights.
The dragon attacks Isabela and Varric as they investigate further into the Tellari Swamps, but pauses when it is confronted by Alistair. Strangely, it pauses and considers Alistair almost... humanly? He asks if it is Yavana.
Sike, Yavana is an actual human witch who looks like a cross between Flemeth and Morrigan. She commands the dragon to leave the party alone and reveals that she is Morrigan's sister. Alistair & co. follow Yavana, asking why she freed Maric from the prison.
Yavana decries the ignorance of mankind, forever killing what it does not understand and driving dragons to extinction (sound familiar?). She reveals to Alistair that Maric had once made a bargain with Flemeth, a bargain which was struck early in The Stolen Throne before Maric reunited the rebellion and reestablished the kingdom of Fereleden. Maric was to rule his kingdom, then return to the Silent Grove afterwards, seemingly to assist Yavana with a task.
Yavana warns the party that there are dangers further along the path towards Maric, and that they should abandon their quest before she leaves with the dragon. Alistair is crestfallen - he'd hoped for some kind of resolution, even if it were a grave. While they discuss their next plan, they are ambushed by Claudio and a band of mercenaries.
They are quickly overwhelmed. Alistair bargains for Isabela and Varric's lives in exchange for his peaceful surrender. But the rogues are not content to let the Crows take the Ferelden king without a fight.
