Story by David Gaider, lead writer of Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II! An essential addition to the Dragon Age canon! Exclusive to the Dark Horse Digital Store!
David Gaider lives in Edmonton, Alberta, and has worked for video game developer BioWare since 1999. He is the lead writer on the upcoming Dragon Age: Origins role-playing game and has previously worked on such titles as Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Neverwinter Nights.
The rescue party is sailing aboard the Pirate Queen's ship, successful in saving the prisoner from Velabanchel. Except, the prisoner is not the long-lost King Maric, but he was the former king's cell mate and tells the party how Maric was walked out of the prison by a powerful witch many years ago.
The party speculate that the powerful witch was Flemeth, the Witch of the Wilds. They are corrected by the prisoner - she was actually Yavana, the Beast of the Tellari Swamps (turns out that there are more than just the one witch of the wilds and each has their own stake in swampy real estate; Varric is about as pleased as we are).
Alistair reveals that he needed to find Maric in order to know if Maric had abandoned his kingdom. Perhaps, if Maric had abandoned him. Isabela roars at her crew and the ship sails for the Tellari Swamps. The crew don't come along on their swampy adventures, but Varric is in it for the story and Isabela thinks Alistair needs an adult around him.
They wander around the swamp for a while, looking for anything conspicuous. A tree shaped like a witch, a crocodile gnawing on their corpses... until a dragon lands almost on top of them.
