O Iluminismo Como Negócio: História da Publicação da Enciclopédia 1775-1800

Rate this book

Massive work from the wonderful Robert Darnton, and if, like me, you have read his work before, you will find yourself at home in this. At the same time, be prepared for an exhaustive study, and not a light read - Darnton is never light, but he's learned to to read more lightly.
As usual with him, something is never interesting for itself so much as for what it relates to, and explains, and illuminates: the whole formed by the details. And yes, it is very detailed,, but he never loses sight of the whole: the publishing business in the 18th C., and so business in that century and so the society around that business at that time. A history of things and people, of ideas and mentality.
You'll end up learning much more than you ever thought you'd want to know, you'll forget it all of course except for bits and pieces. But what will remain is an idea, a new understanding - and then you'll go and read the rest of his work!
