Rate this book
She dazzled with Secrets of Whitewater Creek, now Sarah Barrie kicks off a brand-new trilogy about small towns, secrets, and the love that saves lives.

Successful horse trainer Alissa Morgan-Jones has the world at her feet, until a tragic fire destroys everything. Widowed, in debt and under suspicion for arson, Alissa’s life is in tatters. Her mother-in-law’s isolated farm gives her the opportunity to pull her life back together and get herself back on her feet.

Four years after fleeing the city and the scandal that ruined his career, disgraced lawyer Cameron Blakely has a successful new business and a new life. When his neighbour, Mavis Littleton is diagnosed with a terminal illness he volunteers to handle her affairs – and her farm until her daughter-in-law arrives to take over. When Alissa finally shows up, he’s drawn to her immediately. But there’s more to his new neighbour than her big blue eyes and lost expression. If only she’ll open up and let him in.

But there are secrets in both Alissa’s past and Hunters Ridge – secrets that jeopardise far more than Cameron’s fledgling feelings. Lurking in the isolated wilderness is a danger that neither anticipates – but one that threatens everything: the town, their love, and their lives.

Eighteen months after that terrible night when Alissa Morgan-Jones had almost died; when her husband and her horses HAD died, she was still suffering severely with PTSD and barely able to leave her apartment. Sister Mia had been a constant by her side, fussing and caring for her since the night the dreadful fire had taken everything from Alissa, and knew her sister was improving, but it was excruciatingly slowly. The detective who was investigating the case suspected Alissa of setting the fire herself – the insurance company wouldn’t pay up, and she was deeply in debt as well as traumatised.

When Alissa heard her mother-in-law, Mavis had been committed to a nursing home with dementia and wanted Alissa to care for the animals on her farm out in the country, she was sure she couldn’t do it. But then she decided it was perfect timing to perhaps put the past behind her – she was desperate to move forward; to recover and even though she knew she would never have the courage to work with horses again, Alissa felt she could do other things – though what, she had no idea. Her arrival at the dilapidated farmhouse and then her subsequent meeting with a neighbour, Cameron Blakely started off on the wrong foot. Immediately she was sure she had done the wrong thing in coming from the city to this lonely place.

Slowly Alissa’s life settled and the farm felt a little like home; the puppy Luna (short for lunatic!) was adorable and loved her unconditionally. But strange things were happening in the house – especially when Alissa was alone and especially at night. She was uneasy, scared and when she called Cameron to help, and he found nothing, she knew everyone thought she was crazy – SHE thought she was crazy. Gradually the danger intensified; things happened to make her new friends believe her and know she was obviously in peril. What would happen to Alissa? Would she find the peace and happiness she so desperately craved?

Wow! I loved Legacy of Hunters Ridge by Aussie author Sarah Barrie. I own her first novel, Secrets of Whitewater Creek but haven’t read it yet, but after this one, I’ll be reading it very soon. What a gripping and intense novel – suspense at its best. This fast paced novel had me right at the first page and didn’t let go until I turned the last page with a sigh – but I must say, is Legacy of Hunters Ridge the beginning of a series? The way it ended makes me think so…I hope so! I have no hesitation in recommending this novel extremely highly - brilliant!

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy to read and review.

Alissa Morgan-Jones had everything – a burgeoning career as a dressage eventer and trainer of horses, a handsome husband, an enviable stable. That all changed one night when not only did she discover a betrayal but a terrible fire left her a widow, destroyed her house and her stables. Alissa now suffers from severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and struggles to do simple things. She can’t even think of a horse without breaking out into a cold sweat, traumatised and devastated by her loss. She suffers crippling nightmares and carries her own healing injuries from the fire.

The last thing she needs is news that her somewhat eccentric mother-in-law has had a fall, been diagnosed with cancer and had to go into care. Alissa and her husband purchased the property for his mother to live in and now Alissa owns it. She would’ve been happy to forget about it but instead she must go and sort it out. She’s distressed to discover that their are animals….many animals, including a horse. Her mother-in-law’s cranky neighbour Cameron Blakely is just one more reason to wash her hands of the place.

It isn’t that easy, however. Alissa finds that although there are definitely some strange goings on in Mavis’ place, slowly she begins to find a peace there that she hasn’t been able to since the fire. It takes her a while and she still experiences crippling fear and panic attacks but soon she can even begin to feed the animals, as well as get the horse the care it needs. Soon word of Alissa’s presence in the small town gets out and parents ask her to help their children with horse riding lessons. She’s frightened, terrified that she won’t be able to do it but there are pieces of her brain that see where she can be of help, what she can do to make better riders and mounts. It’s in her blood. Even the animosity with Cameron mellows into something much more attractive and she finds herself drawn into his small circle of friends, fitting in.

I have really developed a bit of a thing for a good romantic suspense and this book definitely fits that bill. From the very beginning I found it difficult to put down, for a couple of reasons. I became really invested in Alissa and her journey because her PTSD was so well written. I really could feel and experience her panic and fear and felt so genuine and believable. I also felt like it was something the author showed that Alissa had to work hard to manage, not something that took front and centre and then kind of faded away. Reading about her struggle made me feel strangely protective of Alissa, like her sister is and I found the scenes with her sister and the detective investigating the fire pretty hilarious. Those two had some chemistry and I’d love them to get their own book at some stage….but more about that later.

I found Cameron a bit of a jerk at the start, he seemed to make a few assumptions about Alissa and why she hadn’t been to the house before now and why she won’t feed the animals. Instead of just asking her if she’s ok, he just assumes reasons himself but when he does witness some of her PTSD related fears, he becomes quite understanding and the two of them end up building quite a connection. It isn’t smooth sailing though, Alissa still has some issues surrounding her husband’s death and something strange is definitely going on in the house.

Which brings me to the suspense element of the novel. I was utterly sucked in by it and loved puzzling it out and putting the pieces together just as things were being revealed in the plot. There were some really fun twists and turns in this and the sinister atmosphere built nicely, with Barrie able to use Alissa’s state of mind as a way to perhaps have the reader (and other characters) query if there really is something happening or if she’s imagining things. I got a few guesses right and got surprised a few other times and thought that the way that things played out was excellent. I was riveted the entire time.

There’s no doubt that this isn’t over and I’m hoping that this is a trilogy. I can’t wait for the next installment, I have to know what happens next.

#2) Shadows of Hunters Ridge ★★★★☆
#3) Promise of Hunters Ridge ★★★☆☆

I read Barrie’s Secrets Of Whitewater Creek two years ago and it kind of blew me away. I had no expectations for it but I found myself slipping into the story with ease. The characters were well-developed, the romance swoon-worthy, and the mystery subtle but nonetheless intriguing. It was everything I needed at the moment… and Legacy of Hunters Ridge definitely lived up to my expectations!

I’m not a massive adult romance fan - it has its merits, but it’s not a genre I reached for a lot myself - but this book definitely made me want to change that. I knew Barrie had a great way of spinning stories but this was just so much fun to read! The writing was simplistic in style but dragged you into the story so easily. The dialogue was on point; it sounded perfectly realistic and there was some great banter between the love interests.

The characters were also fantastic. Our protagonist, Ally, has PTSD and the exploration of this was done so well. I cannot imagine what Ally would be going through, but I also loved the way that Cam and Ebony were involved in her recovery too. Cam struggled to know whether he should protect Ally from her triggers or help her by not treating her any different. I think this is a realistic portrayal of what it would be like to be in a relationship with someone who had PTSD.

With that being said, one of the things that stopped me loving this book more than I did was Cam himself. I didn’t dislike him and maybe it's because I’m not a fan of the hate-to-love trope in general? If he was a little sweeter - more like Reid from Secrets Of Whitewater Creek - I would have adored him.

The plotline was perfect. I don’t think everyone is going to love how character-driven the first half of this story is, but it worked for me. Getting to know the characters and spending time developing the friendships and romance definitely raised the bar for the suspense aspects in the second half of the story. I won’t go into detail about the mystery of this book because spoilers but it was both unique and cliched... and I kind of loved that combination. I’ve seen it done better but that doesn't mean I’m not intrigued to see where it goes next. The epilogue set up a sequel perfectly and I have my fingers, toes, and heart crossed that we’ll get to see more of the characters from Hunters Ridge.

Overall?

This was such a fun, entertaining read. I’m definitely in love with Barrie’s style and I’ll be keeping an eye out anything else she releases. I have Getting Wild on hold already!

Alissa Morgan-Jones was a very successful horse trainer her and her husband David did very well with their business Alissa Ally as she is known to family and friends loves her horses but a dreadful fire destroys everything leaves her a widow and nearly destroys Ally as well physically she mends mentally there is a long way to go so when her estranged mother-in-law Mavis needs her Ally makes the decision to move to the country to Montrose the property Mavis has lived on all of her life Ally's world is turned upside down with strange happenings strange family and lots of animals to look after as well as a gorgeous neighbour.

Cameron Blakely the third has given up being a lawyer after a scandal and is now living in the country running a new business with his friend Lee and doing very well he helps Mavis out as her lawyer but when Ally shows up finally to Montrose there is a spark between them a feisty one as well as a very sensual one but the more he gets to know Ally the more that is uncovered about Ally and Hunters Ridge the place Cam has called home for four years.

This is a fabulous story with intrigue missing girls strange behaviour it will have you on the edge of your seat chewing your nails and not having clue as to who is behind everything. The setting is just perfect for this romantic suspense story the characters are so real they come to life on the pages it is emotional, moving and scary. The banter between Cam and Ally will have you smiling as will the strength and courage that Cam helps Ally to show, throw in the other characters Cam's sister Ebony, Ally's sister Mia and Cam's friend Lee and Ben the cop from Sydney and this story will have you turning the pages and not wanting to put it down. I highly recommend this story it really is one not to be missed written beautifully you will feel as if you are at Hunters Ridge with them all and as this is the first one of a trilogy I can't wait to read the others. Thank you very much MS Barrie for hours of reading please again this is one that will be read more than once and will have a spot on my keeper shelf.

Oh boy, how good was this book?! Delightful country setting, characters to enjoy...or not...suspense, creepy, emotional, pain and fear...the lot. I didn't know what I was sitting on when I collected all three of the Hunters Ridge books some little while ago. Book 1 down, 2 more to go plus anything else Sarah Barrie has written. I thought I would finish this book when I went to bed last night but decided to put it down and finish it this morning. This is the reason: in the yard next door to my bedroom is a very large kennel which contains (at night) a very large dog. If the owner of the dog goes near it, there is great (joyous) thumping of the tail against the wood of the floor of the kennel...when I first heard it, it was disturbing but once I knew what the sound was, I didn't really hear it again. But last night reading close to the end of this book, if I had heard that sound, I would have been climbing the walls!! Thank you Sarah, just what I wanted to read and I'm sure the next two books will continue the suspense!

Focus breathe relax. Not a chance.

This edge of your seat suspense had me turning the pages as fast as I could to find out what was going to happen next. Colourful characters and a brilliant storyline. What started off as a sweet romance ended in a nail biting finale. Wow Sarah Barrie. Wow. This is one writer to watch.

This is my second time reading this series and once again it hooked me straight away. I love the mix of Aussie country romance and thriller/ mystery.

After a horrific fire killed her husband and her beloved horses Ally is lost until she is forced to head to rural NSW to deal with her sick mother in laws property. Between the menagerie of animals that have been left on the crumbling property, her mother in law who wont stop giving Ally cryptic messages about the devil and her Cameron Blakely the third her hot but grumpy neighbor, Ally's already broken life, crumbles even further.
To top it all off the idyllic country town has been plagued with a string on girl going missing.
As the fresh country air and new friends help Ally heal, the mystery of Hunters Ridge deepens and takes a dark turn.

I loved both the character development and creepy twists and turns throughout this book, even though I had read it before it still kept me up to midnight because i just couldn't put it down.
While Cam's grumpy rather rude attitude and the assumptions he made about Ally annoyed me to start with i soon fell in love with his character and his sister Ebony and best mate Lee who also welcomed Ally with open arms. And Ally's hot headed, bold sister Mia had me laughing every time she opened her mouth.

I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves a great Aussie romance with a twist that will keep you on your toes. Now onto book 2!

Book 1 follows Alissa a widow after her husband was killed in a suspicious fire. She is also the police’s number one suspect. Lawyer Cameron is helping his neighbour, Mavis Littleton, Alissa’s mother in law who has a terminal illness.

Alissa heads to Hunter Ridge to look after the farm but everything isn’t as it seems.

I absolutely loved this book. There was so much action and suspense as well as the blossoming romance and the ending had me gasping as my theories were proven partly right! Can’t wait to read book 2.

OMG!! I couldn't put this book down. Read it in a day.

After I got passed the first few chapters, where I was struggling to get into the book, it really picked up. The story flowed nicely and I had to keep reading to find out what happened.

I did guess who the bad guy was about half way through the book, but the little twist - I never saw it coming.

I now have to get the next book to find out what happens next.

What a wonderful suspense filled tale from Australian author Sarah Barrie. I loved how Barrie combined by favourite genre, rural fiction, with an on the edge of your seat style suspense novel. The action of the novel centers on Alissa Morgan-Jones, a young woman who narrowly misses dying in a fire on her property that tragically kills her husband and horses. Suffering from burns to her body and severe PTSD, as well as coming to grips with her husband’s infidelity, Alissa is slowly trying to rebuild her life with the help of her sister. When Alissa’s mother-in-law Mavis contacts her to take over the family’s farm due to illness, Alissa reluctantly takes the reins. Cameron then enters Alissa’s life as he is her next door neighbour to her Mother in law’s property. He has feelings for Alissa and tries to get her to open up to him, but Alissa is keeping her cards close to her chest. When strange happenings and missing girls from the local town begin to crop up, Alissa begins to wonder how safe her new home really is and turns to Cameron for support.
This one has me holding in my breath and exclaiming out loud at the ending. It is an impressive second novel from Aussie author Sarah Barrie. It in an intense story that drew me in immediately from the first page, the action and fallout from the fire made for great reading. Barrie provides the reader with vivid setting detail, I particularly enjoyed main character Alissa’s interaction on the farm with the horses. Barrie handles the PTSD and emotionally scarring Alissa suffers with the sensitivity it deserves, she has clearly spent much time researching this area. Barrie’s characters are realistic, and her descriptions aid the reader’s inner understanding of each character. This applied to both her main character Alissa and supporting characters, sister Mia and even Ben the police officer. The romance in this novel does not take centre stage, but it has a heartfelt tone which I enjoyed reading. I absolutely loved the emphasis on intrigue in this novel, it was extremely well done. However, I actually didn’t realise it would end as it did, I do hope there is a sequel coming soon!
The Legacy of Hunters Ridge is a dramatic, suspense filled rural fiction. With plenty of twists to keep the reader on their toes, this a fabulous read that I am happy to recommend to fans of the rural fiction genre.

Widowed, broke and barely functioning, Ally Morgan is dealing with her PTSD as much as she can, with the help of her sister. But she isn't free of consequences of the fire that had destroyed her life all those months ago and a pesky phone call from an ex-lawyer brings her out into the country and straight back into her nightmares. Dragged into affairs that aren't quite her own, it's there that Ally finds things that do go bump in the night. Tired of simply attributing the strange happenings to her hallucinatory state, she realises that the answers might just be found in the twisted truth that comes out as religious nonsense from her ailing her mother-in-law. From there it's all up to Cam and Ally - and their unfailingly loyal group of friends - to untangle this mystery before that sinister presence comes for her too.

There is so much to like about this book: the creepy suspense that almost verges on the paranormal thanks to the wonderfully descriptive writing, the tight camaraderie and the unexpected, sparkling humour and above all, the breathless action and the well-crafted characters that walked into the story and cemented their places in it. I turned the last page feeling overwhelmed - and it's seldom that I need the rest of the trilogy (right now!) to see this brilliantly written story-arc through.

This is the first book I have read by Sarah Barrie. it is the story of Allissa Morgan Jones as well known horse trainer who is suffering from PSTD after the death of her husband David in a fire and her beloved horses. Her sister Mia is there to support her after the accident. Allissa gets a call to go to Hunter Ridge by her husband mother before she dies as she wants her to deal with the farm as she and dead husband owned. Mavis her mother in law give her rules she has to follow about the farm and the animals. Allissa has to cope with her PSTD as well. Cameron Blakely moved to Hunter Ridge after a scandal ended his lawyer career is the neighbor next Mavis farm and has a new business in building. Cameron finds himself drawn to Allissa. Cameron and Allissa learn many secrets about Allissa past and Hunter Ridge. There is also danger involved for Allissa as some one is trying to kill her and young girls are disappearing from Hunters Ridge.

I was very excited to see a new book by Sarah Barrie, I loved it. The whole story from start to finished kept me going. We have just had fires near us and so the first part really took on some meaning. Sarah writes just beautifully and with such clarity and honestly. Her research into the issues in this book are well done, and you feel that you could you may know the characters well. Her horse information was great and good research again. As for the story what a cracking read, hard to put down as I wanted to keep going but needed sleep. Had me guessing, I can't wait till the next book is out. Will be reading this author for many years to come I would think.

This book was not what I first expected and definitely not one I should have read just before bed. I think the book was very well written and it had me turning the pages to find out what was going to happen. I loved the characters but am not usually a fan of sequels and by the ending, a sequel will definitely be coming. I don't know if my mind can handle another book of this nature.

After being recommended this book by a good friend I finally picked it up to read it. Four days later and a sleepless night I finished it! Couldn't put it down. On so many levels I could relate to the main character Ali Morgan. Funny, witty and heart stopping romance. I'm already on my way to buy the next book in the series!

Please tell me that the plot will continue in the next installment because you can't leave me on a cliffhanger Sarah!!

Traumatised after a fire kills her husband, David, succesful horse trainer Alissa reluctantly assumes caretaker of her mother in law's property. As she settles in, odd things start to occur in the house. Is it the rumoured resident ghost behind it all, or something more sinister?

Whilst all these happenings are troubling Ally, someone has been abducting local women from their cars at night. Is Ally the ultimate target in this sadist's sick game for justice and revenge?

𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫'𝐬 𝐑𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐞 was mostly a nice, simple rural fiction with a bit of mystery and suspense thrown in. That changed with an explosive ending!! I was surprised at the reveal of the perp and their reasonings for their actions!

Mavis was a very interesting character. For someone who is so vunerable, she knows how to put the fright into someone!!

I also enjoyed getting to know Mia, Cam, Ebony and Lee. Given Ally's mental health issues and her past, they are very supportive, protective and caring towards her. I'd certainly want this group in my corner when the going gets tough!

An impressive 🌟🌟🌟🌟✨/5

The Real Beginning

Legacy of Hunters Ridge is book 1 of a series of 3 Hunters Ridge stories, but one of the characters also features in Sarah Barrie's Blood Tree River.
Sarah Barrie's works are not only beautiful romances with larger than life heroes and smart, sassy and gorgeous female leads, they are 'grip the edge of your seat' criminal mysteries and police procedural that will entertain and make you very glad that you have another 2 books in this series to read and then Blood Tree River and its two stand alone spin offs.
You won't be sorry if you purchase this book: Sarah Barrie is a gifted Australian author and her descriptions of the Australian bush make me tingle with pleasure and I am Australian and can easily picture what she is conveying to her readers. Readers from other countries will wish that they could see Australia in all of its beauty-minus the crazy serial killer of course. 😰
5 stars. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. Now onto #2 in the series.

Good story … with more potential

This story is good, and certainly entertaining. However, there are a number of things which could do with improving. Wanting the reader to believe that a cat could do all the things we are told, was stretching things. To believe it as a one off, perhaps, but not the continuation of the happenings. The writing style is good. The storyline could do with tightening. The characters are interesting. Having read Sarah Barrie’s latest books, she has certainly improved. This book is worth a read, but it isn’t as polished as the author’s most recent efforts.
