Join Minna, Pip, Mom, and Dad on a visit to Butterfly Place as they meet Bert the Butterfly Man. They hunt for monarch butterfly eggs and caterpillars, and see the amazing change from pupa to adult monarch butterfly. They learn all about monarchs, metamorphosis, and monarch migration. Nancy Elizabeth Wallace’s sunny cut-paper artwork and lively text entertain as they teach about one of nature’s most remarkable creatures. A make-a-butterfly magnet craft and additional monarch facts and resources are included.
Nancy Elizabeth Wallace attended the University of Connecticut, and majored in sociology and psychology with a minor in art history, then continued on for a master’s degree in child development.
For many years, she worked at Yale-New Haven Hospital with children and teenagers as Child Life Specialist helping children to understand what was going to happen if they needed to have a medical test or an operation or a cast.
Then she took two adult education courses, one was about traditional Scherenschnitt (share- en -sssh -nit) scherren means scissors, schnitt means cut. The other was about writing and illustrating children’s books. When she brought in a cut-paper illustration, the teacher said, “You’ve found your medium!”
Nancy is married to Peter Banks. They have been married for more than 30 years. He is a high school Physics teacher.
I loved this book. It was a long read but I would use it to introduce the topic of butterflies. In the story it has an idea of planting you own butterfly garden. I would do this with my class during the spring/ summertime. I would get permission from my school to do this activity with the class. We could record what we see happening in the garden throughout the week and create a class book about butterflies.
Two small quibbles w/the book; since it stars anthropomorphic rabbits the butterfly expert at the butterfly sanctuary should be the "Bug Bunny" not the "Bug Man" and there is an information page at the end that should have had websites or named places to visit.
This was a great primary text about monarch butterflies, taking a more interactive approach to the writing and suggesting additional activities that the reader can try in order to understand monarchs even better. The story is of a family of humanesque-rabbits that visit a monarch conservatory where they learn all about monarch butterflies. It's very extensive and very effectively presented.
Very cute book and informative. It explains the life of a monarch butterfly through egg stage to migration. It is illustrated with lively cut-paper artwork. Young children will love it. There are also little crafts that you can do and a few jokes thrown in for good measure.
This book is a representation of an interactive Butterfly life cycle. Does this place exist?? Very Cool! Very descriptive and education but cute and fun at the same time. If there is such a place as described in the book ..I wanna go!
