where do i even start with this book??? although it is now known as ‘rewind’ (since the old title and cover is still here) the literal return of his bubblegum klutz (everyone’s beloved aqueela lawson) could not have been any better. this book completely BLEW my mind. i always thought “hm, yeah of course it’s gonna be good because it’s got aqueela and the whole gang in it - but it surely won’t be as good as the first book,” … BOY WAS I WRONG. but of course, the first book will always remain superior, although rewind exceeded my expectations to the point where i couldn’t go past the last 10 chapters without being a complete sobbing mess. everything about aqueela’s journey was so SO … heart-warming??? inspiring??? (struggling to find the right word because i’m still so flabbergasted by what i just stayed up to read until 7am)
there were so many things about this book which made me deeply fall in love with every single character even more than i originally was. i loved how the side characters were deeply focused on this time around, (like benley, zac, a little bit of feebee, even oog, etc) i loved how grey got so much more screen time (written time??) and how the beginning of rewind was basically the opposite of how it started, this time around jay was the more optimistic one (when he was not mad about aqueela leaving and all…) and aqueela was the one learning from him, but then it switches up again a little towards the end when jay breaks and it’s all because of aqueela why he can lift himself back up again.
their story is everything to me.
E V E R Y T H I N G.
i loved how, even despite how obviously crazy some parts were (yet the fact that these insane situations could actually take place…) it was so realistic all the way through, which i think a lot of books fail to do. there’s a part where jay and aqueela are kissing and jay pulls back, aqueela questions his action and he says something along the lines of “your hair, beautiful, but it’s getting in the way,” after he smoothes the hair away from her face - and from then they continue with a conversation. the fact that this specific part literally did not have to be included but WAS made me LOVE it because it just shows how HUMAN this all is and how natural/realistic everything is too. which just further shows how every single of those insane, spontaneous events in the book could happen in real life too - how meeting such people, making friends who become family and creating memories such as they all did is so very possible in reality as well. literally anyone could have a story like aqueela’s and i love how possible that is, how it overlooks the usual stereotypical HEA in contemporary / romance books that only include one hurdle in the story, because in real life there’s more than just one hurdle and aqueela’s and jay’s story shows exactly that.
BUT ANYWAY… ONTO THE NEW CHARACTERS! honestly i thought keagen might’ve been jay’s actual dad… i have no idea why, but seeing as he helped aqueela a lot in new york (much like jay helped aqueela a lot in minnesota) and how he was generally just an important figure in a section of her life, it just felt like in a way… jay was still always with her? i don’t know how to explain it, it’s almost like keag was that stepping stone aqueela needed like how she constantly describes jay being her rock. AND NOW ABOUT ZAC - i really ended up loving his snarky little self :’) tbh i did have a lot of doubts about him because when he was first mentioned, aqueela was completely uncomfortable upon just being in his presence, and if aqueels is on her heels then stuff must’ve been going down… but having learnt why he did what he did and how he’s truly sorry, and the fact that he honestly is the brother aqueela needed, i loved every bit we could get of him. as well as the bonding moments between him and jay where he was treating zac almost like a little brother, maybe even a son (with the way he was lecturing him and all) … it all made me CRUMBLE. now i can’t wait to see little jaybies growing up to be like their father, i was already squealing over him and his interactions with rhys - him raising little aqueela’s will be the death of me. just imagine… o lawd…
BUT ALSO!! grey backstory FINALLY unlocked!!! i really wish he gets his own novella soon, involving stuff about the time he first met jay, the incident, and the time when he was finding his father. i love grey to death, he’s so emotionally detached yet so emotionally involved all at the same time and it breaks my heart because his whole life he’s seen people come and go and he thinks less of himself because of what he’s been through, which makes him think he can’t prevent the things happening in his life and yet he tries so hard - SO DAMN HARD - to keep jay and aqueela afloat and that… that is just everything to me. especially seeing as, despite what he says, he likes aqueela (on more than a platonic level… psst) and yet he knows he can’t have her - or well, at least when given the opportunity he declines it, (similar to how he declined nancy because of jay) the fact that he’s so much of a loyal and good friend to not be an a**hole to take her away from jay is just so :( like wowie he will trade his own happiness for jay’s… he’s a friend like no other. he’s so truly happy for them and it’s like he doesn’t even care that his own happiness is practically non-existent because of it (like how he didn’t get together with nancy just so he could focus on helping heal jay… he’s such a sweetheart i’m in tears) he is so emotionally invested in his closest friends despite only discreetly showing it and i just think people judged him too quickly for his demeanour like they did jay.
okay but what upset me about this book is that… JAY’s HOUSE. THE FACT THAT IT IS GONE. I AM BEYOND DEVASTATION. and when he saw it happen right before him and he said it was like a sign that his life was falling apart and he couldn’t even hold back his tears???? IM SO. i love him so badly. i really hope they all get together and rebuild it because NO WAY ARE THEY CREATING MEMORIES SO EARLY ON IN THEIR LIFE IN A NEW HOUSE ALREADY, NUH UH. i’m also sad about the fact that aqueela and bells don’t seem to be the “best friends” that they used to be anymore. aqueela acknowledges this, and she says that she’s okay with that, that she knows it’s going to be like this between the two of them now because bells is married and busy with her kids, but i just miss the two of them and their bequeela rules so so bad. at least in this book, grey and jay’s friendship is explored a little more into depth and they evidently show time and time again that they’re constantly there for the other as not just friends but as brothers. to me, bells seems quite distant to aqueela in general, her reaction to aqueela finally returning was half of what i expected :/ i guess i just wished there was more chapters where it focuses on just things between bells and aqueela, (like the whole chapter when they kidnapped her, when aqueela goes over to bells’ house, the first chapter where they went to go get ice cream together etc) just some 1:1 girl talk time really, but other than that, the small little interactions between bells and jay were cute as hell, i wish there were more of those - maybe aqueela overhearing jay coming to bells for advice on his relationship with aqueela or something, like asking her how she knew max was the right one, how he should propose to aqueels etc etc. i’d love to see jay and bells tease aqueela and have general banter with each other more often.
in general, the entire story was as beautiful as the previous one and i can’t wait to get onto the third book, fast forward. aqueela is the type of person everyone needs in their life, as well as a jay, a grey, a bells, a max etc etc.
i’d like to thank CJ adler for birthing a whole spirit animal. aqueela’s shown me a lot about life and i’d like the think my own personality stems off of hers in a way, i’d love to leave such a positive mark everywhere i go as does she.
LEGEND LAWSON NEVER DIES!
