Bear Bites #1

Shift Out of Luck

Rate this book
There are few things that are off limits to the were-bears of Pine Falls, but humans are one of them. Which is a real pain, because I’ve had it bad for curvy Adelaide Laurent ever since she sashayed into town. The fact that she’s forbidden fruit just makes my fantasies all the sweeter.

But when she signs up to go on a weekend camping trip with the town’s biggest player, it’s time for a bear to step in and claim his mate.

I don’t care if it breaks the rules. She’s mine, and it’s time she knew it.

I admit it.
I have a thing for the whole "shifter" porn romances.
So when I saw my friend Sh3lly reading this my little pervy ears perked up.
Palm Springs commercial photography

Adelaide had moved to Pine Falls years ago to open up her spa, she starts noticing the hot guy that owns the sporting goods store across the street from her. Cole has noticed her also, but humans are off limits.
No insta-loving. These two have been horn-dogging each other for years.
Adelaide is that whole "virgin" thing but guess what? She is a plus sized woman! And the author writes her character well. Take that skinny biotches!

I liked this short little book. Full of sexy times and some bear loving. Hells yeah!

Bet y’all thought you had seen the last of me reading porn, huh???? Well guess what?

Palm Springs commercial photography

That’s right. My ride with the bikers may have ended, but thanks to a plethora of perverts who have been kind enough to befriend me on GR I was also introduced to the world of werewolfbear romance. (Please note I use that term in the loosest manner possible because this is pretty porntastic.) I mean Sh3lly and Shelby and Future Jess and Monty were all like . . .

Since I am but a mere mortal it was impossible for me to resist the power of those smut peddlers.

So what did I get out of Shift Out Of Luck aside from a gigglesnort worthy title? I’ll give you a hint . . .

Palm Springs commercial photography

This was the story of Cole who has been pining for Adelaide for years since she moved to Pine Falls. Adelaide has been dropping some not-so-subtle hints (mainly in the form of bountiful cleavage placed in Cole’s sightline) that she’s interested in Cole, but he’s unwilling to take the bait. Cole’s problem is a big one . . .

Palm Springs commercial photography

Well yeah, that. Also he’s a werebear who is terrified he’ll break poor ol’ Adelaide in half if they get frisky and he can’t control his inner animal. Lucky for the reader Adelaide isn’t a sissy and eventually convinces Cole that they should . . .

Ha! Yeah right. More like he should let her ride that donkey donkey let her ride that donkey. (Ahhhh, the 69 Boyz. Old but gold, right?)

Anywho, this had enough of a plot that I didn’t feel 100% guilty reading it (just like 97.5%). It was also short so I wasted zero hours on it and the sex was so juicy that I was all om nom nom nom . . .

Palm Springs commercial photography

Now I know why all the gals were recommending Ruby Dixon motorbike books to me. She’s pretty good at porn science.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

This was fucking amazing. How can it not be when the H all but worshipped the h? I mean really worshipped her. Sure, this needed a legit epilogue, but that's just a minor flaw compared to the overall awesomeness of this novella.

I'm not going to give you a summary because this is a short novella, and if I did that there'd be nothing left to read about. So just trust me when I say that the hero was so incredibly devoted to the heroine, and the h, herself, was brazen and kickass and very likeable. If you're looking for a quick yet sexy read, then this is definitely for you.

When I saw that Ruby Dixon had other books out, I was like, "sign me up, baby!" Her big blue aliens are my favorite. And, she writes female characters that are normal with normal reactions. I love Liz and Georgie from the blue alien smut books.

Anyway, so I thought I would love this just as much. I mean, the title of the book? That's just setting us up for funny. But, I was disappointed. I hate being disappointed. It makes me sangry. (Sad+Angry). The only thing that makes me sangrier is when someone eats the last maple donut. The maples are mine, assholes!

I like to lick them all to claim them

The problem with this short little book was that the couple was already in love with each other for three years. We just get a story about them having sex. Meh.. Okay, I get that this is smut, but I still want to watch my couple fall in love before the pornstache pizza delivery guy shows up.

I'll stick with the big blue aliens. They always deliver the fun!

Cute quick read about Cole, a bear shifter, and Adelaide, his human mate that he is resisting for fear of hurting her. He is sexy and growly. She is a virgin who is apparently very well versed in the world of self pleasure. When Adelaide goes camping with the town creeper, Cole decides he's not having it. It's definitely OTT insta love. I enjoyed it but felt like it was missing a little more development. It's hard to make a shortie feel complete and this one felt like it was almost there but not quite with its fast pacing. Safety: No OW/OM/sharing. No rape/abuse. No condoms. h is a V. There is definite pushing away.

Werebears+Smut+Ruby Dixon= FUN FUN FUN

Adelaide is a human and a virgin who knows what she wants and she has been patient for three years.
Cole is a bear shifter and crazy for Adelaide for three years. But he is afraid that if he ever attempts anything with her, he will break her (literally).
Things are about to get hot and steamy in the forests of Pine Falls...

This is my first time reading from this author and I have to say that, if her other books are anything like this one, she's got herself a new fan! That's for sure!

description

Gosh, where do I even start. I saw a review from my friend a couple of days before and I though 'OK, let's check it out'. But when I finally read this amazingly sweet story today, I was quite pleasantly surprised by how good it actually was. My expectations were surpassed, no joke! I love reading paranormal books and especially the ones with shifters and their mates. There is nothing better than knowing that there is someone out there that is your one and only.

description

Aaah, Cole, you poor tortured soul. I felt really bad for him. He's had his eyes only for one woman, a woman he believed was too frail for him and his bear. He believes that for three whole freaking years! Now that's what I'd call dedication! Thankfully fate kicks him into action when Adelaide goes camping with town’s biggest player or as I like to call him, town's biggest asshole. Of course he has to save her and finnaly make her his own. And that's exactly what he does.

description

As for Adelaide, she's one feisty, kickass chick, who knows who and what she wants. I really liked her. She wanted Cole and wasn't even shy about it, but there were times where she really thought of giving up, not that I blame her.

I mind that he left. I flung myself at the guy and he ran away like I was a leper. Jeez. That hurts a girl’s ego. Still… he did kiss me.

Thankfully it all turned out well for these two. They really did deserve some happiness and I'm glad they found that in each others arms. :) A great read!

I loved this story. Cole was so smitten with Adelaide. It was very sweet. One thing did confuse me. He stayed away from Adelaide because he was afraid to hurt her in bed, but he mentioned at one point that only a few human women were able to take him comfortably. Why would he avoid her for 3 years when he had safely had sex with humans in the past? Obviously this small thing didn't affect my enjoyment. On to the next one!

If we are friends then you know that I am a huge fan of Ruby Dixon. I have read her Bedlam Butchers MC series. I have read every IPB and Icehome book. I'm current with her Fireblood series. I recently just picked up the third book to her Corsairs series. The only series left to read for me is her Bear Bites series. While I've never read a book about shapeshifters, I've learned to never doubt Ruby's talent. I mean she made me fall for giant blue aliens with tails!

But I was slightly disappointed with this book. It was like Ruby was trying to throw every trope in less than 100 pages.

Love at first sight ✔
The whole cat-and-mouse chase ✔
Heroine is virgin ✔
Overly jealous alpha ✔

The worse part for me was the underdeveloped shapeshifter background. I wanted to know more about them and, sadly, Ruby didn't deliver. But I am hopeful that she will reveal more as the series continues because I will keep reading it. I'll never give up on RD!

Sweet & steamy. Sad, sad, sadly, this was only 55 pages long on my e-reader. I wanted it to be longer and have an epilogue. I can only assume it doesn't because the next book in the series picks up right where this one ends. While this is short, it's adorably sweet and has sexy times = the usual perfection that is Ruby Dixon. I still love her Not-Hoth blue barbarian aliens most of all, but this series will help the withdrawal symptoms until the next book comes out. Keep writing Ruby!

I second Daniella's review about the H worshipping the h. Seriously. And what female doesn't like that kind of devotion.

When I saw it was a Ruby Dixon book, my first thought was "Wow, this will be a great, funny book!" Guess what...?

Maybe it's because I read this one right after a 5 star book, but ah well. I really didn't like it! It's damn hard to write a good short story, and a great one... well, it's close to impossible. But Ruby Dixon did it before. Too bad this one fell short for me.

I didn't like the characters, they didn't have any chemistry (yeah yeah, it's only a few pages long, it's hard to do, but not impossible). The plot wasn't bad (I absolutely love me some shifter smut!) but it wasn't enough. It it had been longer I probably would have DNFed it. Thank God for small miracles, right?

I'll probably try more books from this series, but later. Much later...

Shift Out of Luck is the first book in Ruby Dixon's newest (Bear Bites) series of novellas—wherein the tiny, off-the-beaten-path town of Pine Falls, which is inhabited by both humans and Shifters...

♠ ♣ ♥ ♦

For three years Cole Braxton—a BIG, hulking male bear-shifter—has yearned for Adelainde Laurent, the curvy human woman who taunts him with her swaying hips and flirty smile.

But even though Cole wants to touch and taste and fuck her...he's also terrified of hurting her fragile human frame with his large hands and strong desires. So he hardens his jaw, and gives her an expressionless gaze—all the while desperately trying to distance himself from her.

Although when Adelaide signs up for a tour of the woods with Pine Falls' notoriously sleazy, love'em and leave'em tour guide, Cole's beast awakens...and refuses to let her go. Because no other male will get to claim Cole's mate in the woods.

No one but him. Every other male? Well...they're Shift Out Of Luck.

♠ ♣ ♥ ♦

While Shift Out Of Luck was a short and sassy novella, it captured my interest with its well-written, shifting (pun intended) POV's, smutty sex scenes, and appealing characters.

Though I do wish there was more explanation/development of the (Bear Bites) world and its inhabitants, that didn't distract me from enjoying this book as a quick, over-the-top, fun paranormal romance read.

Overall, I would recommend this book to those who are fans of Alexa Riley—and who're trolling through their shelves, searching for something short and smutty, with big bear-shifters that have even bigger dicks hearts.

Hahahhaa...*wink*

A GREAT KIND OF NONSENSE:

*PS: I was given an copy of this book. But I do solemnly swear that I am up to...good. ;) This is a fair and honest review of this book, pinky promise.*

Sweet, sexy were-bear H/ BBW h PNR romance novella set in a small town milieu. Really well done though, its what I'd expect from this author given how much I've enjoyed her Ice Planet SFR series. It also reminded me of Alexa Riley's reads, which is a huge plus, at least for me.
The H was obsessed with h and the h was likeable enough and the sexy-times were sweet and hot. I reduced a star bcos the H was reluctant(he had his reasons, but they didn't seem that substantiated and he changed his mind for no real reason that I could see) and the h had to chase him- albeit in a cute, harmless manner - but still he kept her waiting for 3 yrs. Someone could have snapped her up in all that time and the H seemed fine with that.

Safety: Safe romance.

The romance aspect just didn't work for me. I like that Cole was celibate, but I didn't like his reasoning behind it. Cole's been obsessed with Adelaide for three years going, yet he hasn't ever approached her. He spends more time glaring at her and trying to scare her off than actually being a pleasant person. His reasoning for this is that he doesn't want to hurt her accidentally, being a shifter and all. That might seem like a plausible reason, but I don't think it counted in favour of the romance. He said there have been other women able to take him, but he doesn't know if Adelaide can. And why? Because he hasn't approached her. I just felt that if he really did care about her, if he really felt such a desire to make her his because she's his mate, he wouldn't have dithered for three years.

What annoys me about his refusal to approach her is that even though he's not putting the moves on her, he'll actively cockblock her because he doesn't want anyone else touching her either. Because she's his. But she's not. Except he says she is (to the reader, not to her). But he refuses to make a move. Yet no one else is allowed to either. You see what the problem is? It's some real BS. I would have been more willing to believe if she either hadn't been interested in him or had been in a relationship and not available, rather than her just waiting around for him to reciprocate her advances for the last three years.

And with her waiting around for three years, she just came off desperate to me. She's always wearing low-cut tops to attract his attention and all but throwing herself at him. Being the reader and having Cole's POV, we're privy to the fact that he's interested in her, so her interest in him isn't completely cringeworthy. She, on the other hand, is not. She's just been pining away for him for three years. She tries to flirt and wear enticing clothing, but he rejects her. She hits on him, and he rejects her. She throws herself at him, and he rejects her. Three years of this. And she's still going at it. Just comes off kind of pathetic.

Now. The virgin thing. As soon as I saw that I rolled my eyes and thought of course she's a virgin. I know some people might like that, but it just didn't work in the book's favour in my eyes.

Her being a virgin was dumb for various reasons. First, she's supposedly super pretty and buxom and well put-together...yet she hasn't slept with a guy before? It's not that I think every women who falls under the descriptors I just mentioned isn't a virgin, I just find it hard to believe when authors push the virgin thing and then go on to describe how the h is a veritable goddess (and, in this book, one who's in-touch with her sexuality). She says she's had plenty of offers but hasn't taken anyone up on them; that she's been waiting for the right guy. And I guess the "right guy" is a man who's been ignoring you for three years, huh? Yeah, k.

And ok, the virgin thing could've worked if it'd been utilized well, but it wasn't. The author could've made it, instead of revealing herself to be a virgin to him, that he freaks out afterwards because he's under the assumption that he hurt her. This would've put the virginity to use story-wise and also helped to temporarily legitimize his fears some (since he spent three years agonizing over maybe hurting her). But she told him, so there went that possibility.

Lastly, I think that the fact she's a virgin also takes away from them as a couple and the romance. He didn't approach her for three years. When they're in the woods together, he wasn't going to have sex with her then either. The only reason he ends up proceeding is because she tells him she's a virgin, and then he suddenly feels the "need to claim [her]" and "make [her his]." It's only after she reveals her virginity that he feels this way. With his three years of worrying that he might hurt her, shouldn't he now be worried that he's going to hurt her even more and she definitely might not be able to take him??? He doesn't. So it makes me wonder, would he ever have consummated if she hadn't been? Honestly, by the end, I was left feeling doubtful.

(Besides...why bother making her a virgin if you're going to subject her to "several rounds" of sex right afterwards? Just another reason to add on the against side...)

Other that than, I also thought Adelaide was super dumb. At one point, before she's even gone out with Pat, she senses something's wrong. Later, she says his jokes have been "pinging her rape-dar," yet doesn't leave or turn back. And then of course Cole's gotta come swooping in to save his damsel-in-distress. She was so TSTL.

I was also turned off by the constant mentions of her breasts and body. She's got a face, you know? And she has a personality. Not everything you found attractive about her has to be her body, especially if she's kept your interest for three years. Even when they're in the woods and she's in distress and has been crying because of the bear she saw and being left in the woods near-dark, he's just looking at her breasts. Seriously not the time, buddy. The only time he mentions something about other aspects of her, he caps those qualities off by mentioning she's gorgeous. Even though he's been attracted to her for three years, still felt shallow to me rather than anything more.

And I mentioned this in my status, but the comment from Leo really, really pissed me off.

“Sixteen is the age of consent,” Leo argues. “Besides, they were at least eighteen, and I slept with two of them so they were the equivalent of one cougar.”

I already wasn't going to read his book, but if I had been interested, this would've guaranteed me avoiding it. I mean, it's already bad enough that he's a manwhore having threesomes, but this comment about sixteen? Yuck.

I used this gif in my status but I have to use it again because...

Honestly, I trust no person who quibbles about the "age of consent." Ick. Even as a joke, I don't find it funny because there's such a real problem of adults, particularly men, objectifying children and barely legal adults (girls/women), so I can't find the humour in it. I'm too busy being icked out by it.

And the casual remark about "cougars"? I didn't like that either, especially because 36 isn't even old. Men double that age still go around dating women half their age, yet they don't have an equivalent to "cougar" designated for that behaviour. Most people just brush it off because they're "consenting adults." So why do women get called cougars for dating younger men?

I also hated the usage of words like "tits," c-word and p-word. I really, really don't get what's appealing about someone talking about your "sweet c-word." I've read it in numerous books and it always makes me cringe. I don't get what's so hot about it??

Besides that, like always, I don't like the first person, present.

I reenter my spa and grit my teeth as I move behind the counter to flip on the small indoor waterfall next to the front desk. I turn on the Celtic music CD and straighten magazines in the waiting room.

Why present?? Why not just at least write in past tense if you're going to keep first person?

There were also some weird lines like these:

His weight presses between my thighs, his hips cradling mine...

I don't know about y'all, but I find the above to be kind of a physical impossibility. If he's pressed between your thighs, his hips can't cradle yours.

Anyway, this review isn't to knock anyone who has enjoyed it, because plenty have, including some on my own f-list. It just didn't work for me, with the H's celibacy the only thing I felt it really had going, tbh. And I know it's ridiculous that I wrote such a hellva long review for a novella that was basically fluff, but I did...so whatever.

A short shifter story. About Cole and Adelaide.

Cole wanted Adelaide for three years but he stayed away from her because he didn't want to hurt her. The reason? He's a bear shifter and she's human.

When Adelaide decided to camp with Pat who's an ass, Cole told her not to go but because he didn't give her any reason not to, she went with Pat. But Pat had other thing on his mind and that's to sleep with Adelaide. Once Cole found out, he went after them and saved her.

He's still reluctant to sleep with her but once she told him something he claimed her as his mate.

I liked the book but I want more. I just wish there's an epilogue.

This was my second attempt at reading Ruby Dixon’s story and unfortunately her writing and storytelling is not doing it for me at all. I just find it lacking in so many ways.

This story (novella?) is equivalent to 3 minutes long porn video while 2 minutes of it are foreplay only. Quick gratification but no (art) value.

Yes, I was able to finish the story. But considering it is super short it doesn’t say much in its favor... I suggest seeing for yourself whether it is your cup of tea or not. Either way, not recommended!

This was the 3rd time I've started this book, remembered I've read some of it before and was not impressed and then DNF but forget to shelve it on GR. As you can see how memorable I've found it, you'll excuse me from talking about the plot or the characters because I've already forgotten all about it.

This was a good start to a new series, but can also be read as a standalone. I liked getting to know the town and new shifter information. There wasn't any overload of information that got annoying, and that was good, but I also felt like there could have been a little more told about the characters.

Overall, I liked the book but it was missing something for me. It either needed more romance or more sex...just more anything, I guess. I still recommend this book for anyone looking for a short and fast read, about an alpha were-bear claiming his mate.

I adored this entire series! These books are hot as shift! Ruby Dixon (who brought you Ice Planet Barbarians) takes on the insta-obssesed alpha shifter hero trope with her unique brand of humour and turns it into something adorably cute and toe-curlingly swoon-worthy with her pack of bears who growl their way through life and who are more than ready to lay down and curl up in the lap of their mate.

Even if shifter or paranormal romance is not your thing, you will absolutely love short novellas as they are fairly low on the paranormal but very high on loveable, sexy heroes and the curvy and sassy heroines they’re obsessed with.

I’m obsessed with all of these men and I am not ashamed to admit that my fantasies now include falling into a cuddly den of bear hugs and fur petting.

Shift Out Of Luck

Cole has been obsessed with his wet dream come to life, Adelaide, ever since she charged into town and opened her spa right across the street from his tourist shop. Though, ever since that one incident that one time with that one bear and that one human that didn’t go so well, there’s an unspoken rule that shifters need to stay away from humans. Unfortunately, Adelaide is very human and Cole has very much recognised her as his mate. Oh shift! Cole is afraid of hurting Adelaide and so does everything he can to stay away from her, but Adelaide didn’t get that memo and she’s determined that Cole will be her first. Double shift!

Cole is completely confused as to how to handle this situation and after he adorably puts his paw in it, again, Adelaide decides to forget about her crush on Cole and take life by the balls as she goes camping for the very first – with another man; who is incidentally the town playboy. Cole is not pleased and goes after them, just to keep an eye on them. And that’s when shift gets real!

The novella is told from a dual POV and the romance between this sassy heroine and a very confused hero is absolute sugar. Addictive, sweet and somewhat naughty. Ruby Dixon packs a lot of personality, romance and eroticism into just a few pages. The secondary characters are just as entertaining as the MCs and you will fall in love with this whole town and it’s residents. Shift Out Of Luck is an absolute good time and definitely recommended.

A really short yet simple shifter romance

This made for a nice quick read. Here's my breakdown:

Pros:
* kindleunlimited
* an easy and angst free shifter read
* cute book title

Cons:
* I wanted a bit more character depth
* An epilogue would have really done wonders
* Very little shifting actually occurred - it didn’t have much of a shifter feel to it
* I wasn’t a fan of the heroine being a virgin
* It took this couple 3 years of watching and swooning after one another from across the street daily? That’s a bit extreme. I wanted this couple to have more actual encounters with each other rather than watching from a distance.

Overall, for a lunch break read it would be great, but if you are looking for a full blown shifter novel with depth this won't be the one. I'm likely to check out other books in the series when I'm looking for a quick read with a touch of steam.

4 Sizzling Shifter Stars

**WARNING: SOME PARTS OF THIS REVIEW ARE REPEATED IN EACH BOOK OF THE SERIES' REVIEW AS THE INFORMATION PERTAINS TO THE SERIES AS A WHOLE, BUT EACH BOOK WAS REVIEWED INDIVIDUALLY AS WELL.**

Confession:HOT COVERS and CLEVER TITLES are what drew me to this series because until the Bear Bites Series I was a "shifter virgin". You heard me right. I sat back judgingly for a long time thinking everyone else was nuts for reading this genre and I was the only sane one for abstaining. I was wrong and I say I was wrong!

I ADORE this series and I am officially going to expand my horizons to other shifter series solely because of how much I enjoyed this one! If that's not a glowing endorsement, I don't know what is.

For several years Cole has watched Adelaide from a distance longing for her yet feeling he needs to protect her from himself. After knowing a friend (and fellow bear shifter) who unintentionally killed his human girlfriend Cole has convinced himself he will only hurt Adelaide and they can never be together. The problem is Adelaide has been watching him too. All it takes is one moment to change everything for these two.

I don't want to comment on much more because these are short books and I don't want to spill all the beans. I will just say I love both the main characters and the introductions to the secondary characters in this book. As a shifter virgin I also felt this first book in the series gave me just enough information about how this whole shifting things works to carry me through the rest of the series. It was HOT HOT HOT! I want a bear of my very own!

My review comes with the warning that this is a series of NOVELLAS, in other words these are short quick reads so there is no time for extra detail or character development. With that being said I sat down one night thinking, "why not" and figured if I wasn't into it, I wouldn't have committed much time and a day later I had finished all four. I was consumed!

Both H and h had a crush on each other for three years, but H was too stubborn to act on it because h was a human.

This story would be better if there was an epilogue, or gave us some build-up between them.

Super short. Really a story about how they got together. But for what it was, I really liked it! I marked it down a bit for length and for the hero sitting on his ass for 3 years and not going after her. His excuses all proved to be not real so that was frustrating. Thank goodness the heroine was willing to push him!

But a totally enjoyable story!
