This story is told through poems of the little girl's favorite things. The common thread in all the poems is her father... and one day he gets to come home early from work. She is so excited and they clebrate her birthday. This is a cute book for poetry but also to learn about Japanese culture and traditions. That is a culture that is not focused on much so this book is a good addition to your library.

The weaknesses, imo: not much of a story, but a sequence of very short episodes. Art that I don't find appealing. The strengths: lots of wonderful details; an easy way to learn a lot about Japan; both in main text and in generous back matter.

I do recommend these Global Kids Storybooks; I discovered them purely by accident and am very glad that I did.

I like this book because of how it shows the love between a father and daughter. This book is great for students to read and possibly even relate to.

This story is told through a series of short non-rhyming poems. A young girl talks about her father and her favorite things. Almost all of her favorite things include her father. So when she goes to a shrine, she promises to be a good girl if her father will come home early… and he does! In the end we learn it is her birthday and the family gets together for a family photo to celebrate. Through the poems and the side notes, the reader also learns about Japanese culture and traditions.
