A beautiful clothbound volume as enduring as its message: Young women of the world — the world is yours!
For Teenage Girls celebrates the incendiary brilliance and limitless promise of young women — our daughters, sisters, friends, ourselves. Drawing on the legacy of Joan of Arc, Anne Frank, Malala, Cleopatra, Sacajawea, and other young women who dared to believe in themselves, poet Clementine von Radics calls on a new generation of girls to trust their hearts, follow their paths, and light up their worlds. Clementine's video performance of "For Teenage Girls" is an internet sensation, and has won praise from Bustle, The Huffington Post, Smart Girls at the Party, Hello GIggles, and Everyday Feminism. This special edition makes a beautiful gift and powerful talisman — a book to give, to keep, to live by.
The world is waiting for you to set it on fire. Trust in yourself. And burn.
The reason this is a 4* and not a 5* despite me thinking Clementine is one of the best poets out there right now, is because there is maybe less than a 1,000 words in this entire (lovely hardcover) book. I knew it was only 64 pages when I bought it, but I figured it would, essentially, be 64 poems. It's not. It is one running poem across 64 pages with between 5-100 words per page.
Still, worth a read. As I said, I love Clementine and have all her other books.
Another of the Internet “insta-poems” that make their way into the print realm. This 64-page long poem is spread across some beautifully illustrated pages. I had no idea what it was when I picked up the book, but it was a short read, and I loved this line: "Do not let their doubting drown out the sound of your own heartbeat."
The world is laid out for us to set on fire, and all we have to do is “burn.” Reminds me of my love, Kerouac. "Burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars."
A very short poem that shows that being a girl is not something that you should let hinder yourself from being anything but outstanding. Though, a little research might be necessary in order to understand all of the references (but nothing too wild).
I recommend this to all the teenage girls with wild ambitions and trembling hearts (this title tho) for you are so much stronger than the world has ever believed you could be. The world is waiting for you to set it on fire. Trust in yourself and burn. If you are not a reading type, you can check Clementine von Radics out her youtube spoken word poetry.
This was my first book by Clementine Von Radics, but it will not be my last. Simply put this book is extraordinary. I wanted to savor every line until it was inked onto my soul. This book is a perfect gift for any young girls and even to the dads raising them. They will nod along with each line and by the end a fire will be set inside them ready to do something everlasting. I loved the line that said "Young girls with big ideas are far more terrifying than monsters." Isn't that the truth? We may be kicked down by society, but our ideas and when we set our minds to things we are bigger then life. We could change the world.
"The world laid out before you to set on fire. All you have to do is burn."
This is veeeery short, hence the 4 and not 5 stars. I had to read it multiple times to really appreciate it and truly understand it, but it's a beautiful little reminder that girls, women can do anything they want, with the help of nobody but themselves. Very empowering!
This book was so empowering and helps you to know you do have power to impact others lives in a positive way. You don’t have to let others control you. You have a spark inside you that you should let burn.
So I borrowed a digital copy of For Teenage Girls With Wild Ambitions and Trembling Hearts by Clementine von Radics from my library thinking it was an entire collection of poetry (and having adored Mouthful of Forevers by the author) but it turns out, it's actually just one slightly longer poem. It's a beautiful poem, an odd to brave and powerful teenage girls doing amazing things. Never named directly, the poem references historical and modern figures such as Joan of Arc, Cleopatra, and Malala. The poem is broken up so there's really only a few lines on each page and some abstract graphics on the opposite page, which I assume would look really nice in a paper edition. Even though For Teenage Girls With Wild Ambitions and Trembling Hearts was much shorter than I expected, I really enjoyed reading it, and I definitely think it would make an excellent gift for a teenage girl, but a lovely read regardless of age. I certainly plan to continue reading more from von Radics in the future.
Read it to my teenager and I think she liked it. Because the book form doesn't name each woman directly, she liked trying to figure out which girl each stanza was about as I read it.
I want this to be required reading for every teen, maybe. I reveled in the young women whose stories I recognized, and went straight to reference to find out those I didn't. Thank you, oh librarian who brought it to my attention!
A few punchlines really hit the chord, or I would say those are the backbone of this petite collection. There is very little yet so meaningful to gulp for teenage readers out there. I wish all of the proses could hit the same way as a few of them did, then it would have really done the magic.
I bought this the same day I bought A Mouthful of Forevers. This is the same poem that’s featured in that book. It’s also my favorite and so I’m happy to have a version that’s special and illustrated.
Needed a really short read to be able to complete the February reading challenge (read one book in February). This little poetry novella is really sweet and captivating, going through the ages of 13 to 18 and exploring what women and girls go through. It was so short but I enjoyed it.
I feel like this book relates to me and other young girls. Very inspiring for the purpose of moving forward with my life and staying motivated! Wish it was longer..
