Get ready for this summer’s anticipated movie SUICIDE SQUAD with the comics that inspired the film, including fan-favorite characters Harley Quinn, Deadshot and Captain Boomerang!

THE WORLD’S WORST HEROES HAVE GONE ROGUE!

Task Force X team members Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Black Manta and Parasite are killers being given a chance to do good for the U.S. government...not that they have a choice. One step out of line and their handler, Amanda Waller, can set off their surgically implanted bombs. But if they play along, this “Suicide Squad” might just be their shot at redemption.

When Waller discovers that Task Force X is being manipulated by a shadowy corporate conspiracy, she decides to take her team off the grid. Now, without their bombs to keep them in check, the only thing keeping the world’s worst heroes from becoming full-blown villains again is their desire to see justice served.

Will that be enough to keep Waller’s former prisoners from killing their jailer?

Amanda Waller discovers Sage has been manipulating Task Force X aka Suicide Squad as part of a conspiracy and takes herself and the team into deep cover. Meanwhile the Squad are fractured and proving to be more ineffective – is this the end of Suicide Squad? If you read this you’ll probably find yourself eagerly anticipating that!

Sean Ryan’s New Suicide Squad started so promisingly that it’s disappointing to see it end so poorly. The team have become a useless disaster. Parasite’s unconscious for most of it, Manta’s locked up, Deadshot’s injured and so heavily medicated that he can barely lift his arm let alone shoot straight, and Harley is lethargic throughout. She literally describes what I was feeling when reading this one: “It’s boring. I’m not having any fun.” Boomerang tries rallying them but he’s unconvincing at best, especially given that he instantly contradicts his own motivational message!

The Sage conspiracy stuff doesn’t amount to a hill o’beans and it basically turns into a Waller comic with the Suicide Squad standing in the background, occasionally waking up to fight some faceless goons. There was an exciting moment when the Squad think their neck-bombs have been deactivated and lunge for Waller but it’s over quickly. I appreciate Ryan showing the effects of the missions on the characters in an attempt to develop them but they’ve developed into characters not worth reading about!

The book closes out with a couple of instantly forgettable comics: the first featuring Deadshot and written by Brian Buccellato where Deadshot shoots some people (yawn), and the second featuring Katana and written by her co-creator Mike “Batman: Year Two” Barr which is predictably dogshit. Something about… ah, who cares, it’s Mike Barr.

Unfortunately Sean Ryan‘s New Suicide Squad goes out with a whimper rather than a bang. The good news is that he’s moved onto bigger and better things, writing Nova for Marvel – check that out instead of bothering with this unmemorable blah!

Amanda Waller easily sees through what Vic Sage is planning and takes the team underground. At least for a couple of issues. It all felt rather rushed and gets tied up all nice and tidy within 2 issues. It was all kind of a letdown after establishing Vic Sage as a foil for Amanda Waller over the previous dozen issues. Not great, but not bad either. The only really interesting part is when the team figures out the implants aren't working and go after Waller. Phillip Briones's art looks like John Bryne reincarnated.

It's been so long since I read this. I liked it pretty well. It's dark and violent, and for Harley fans, she has a moment where she questions what she's become. I would take a star off because Deadshot is under-utilized and sidelined, and he's one of my favorite characters. There was a lot of mayhem with this volume, so that made it had to follow. I did like seeing the tables briefly turned on Waller, but she's almost impossible to outmanuever. Black Manta is a prick!

I was happy to have more Suicide Squad, but I'm not sure this run is as impressive as the last one.

Man after an amazing volume 1, a pretty decent volume 2, we get a pretty bad volume 3. There's still some funny moments in the first few issues but this one takes a huge nose dive. Especially the ending of this volume which focuses on solo stories of deadshot and katana.

What I liked: Some of the humor was fun in issue 1-2 and then...dies. Quickly. Anyway more good...uh...we get a fun version of...wait what am I even saying.

What I didn't like: All the characters felt lifeless. Everything building up matter not here after the first two volumes. No remorse or anything for Reverse Flash. Fuck the one shots of the members, they're so bad.

Overall this is pretty awful. I'll have to drop this series. Oh wells. Had fun for volume 1 and 2.

Amanda Waller is going rogue! After Vic Sage (is this the original Question, or not?) takes over Task Force X and Belle Reve, Waller suspects there is more going on than Sage is pretending. After pulling a fast one on her small team of Suicide Squad folks, it's up to Waller to save Task Force X from the various machinations of Sage and his cohorts.

The writing was clear and well-plotted, but the art was a bit on the amateurish side. Proportionately bad in some places, and in others poorly drawn faces that never looked the same for each character. One would think a premier book like Suicide Squad would garner a top rated artist, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Great stories. One more volume and I will be caught up on the Suicide Squad prior to Rebirth. More of the Mission Impossible style of stories. On the run, even from their own side. Kind of hard to keep calling them villains anymore. Can't wait for the Blu-ray of the movie to come out.

Cliche every way. Harley is just teenage set dressing. Waller looks like a cool mix of Gotham’s Fish and Cat Woman though. How is the Squad this bumbling still when it’s not even a matter of sabotaging others? Coloring v good with nice neon fading. Artwork okay, typical of this era. Cohesive enough but faces can be too ugly in the quick draw of it all. Everyone’s hair is cute, a bit unique in shaping.

So from what I understand this issues 13-18 so this is my review of that.

I liked the direction that Ryan was going with the Squad, he chose character driven plot over just explosions and simple storylines. However I guess DC didn't want that and once again we get ANOTHER author change...

World: The art is fine for the first 4 issues, I like the style of the characters, I would have liked a bit more detail on the coloring but overall it's a good looking book. The world building is also good, we've been building towards the Pearl group for a while and the pieces do finally fall into place. The new stuff with Seeley on the other hand comes off out of left field and feels very fragmented from the world that Ryan has created, it's still good, but it's not well told and fairly choppy.

Story: The final 4 issues of Ryan's run feels very rushed, all the pieces were mashed into place and a character death there rings no emotional resonance as there was not really anytime to develop that character. The finale made sense but it was rushed and also unearned. We were just getting into the depths of the Pearl Group with the last two books and this sudden end does Ryan no service. It's still good, but you can tell he was rushed out of the door for Seeley to come in. How does the first 3 issues of the Seeley run fare? It's pretty choppy, and tonally a fracture from the previous run. We get a villain whose' motivations are unclear and half assed and dialog that is painful to read. The slew of character introduced in just two issues is overwealming and not in a good way. I will also like to note that being Chinese and spending a lot of time there that stereotypes of what Hong Kong should look like make me laugh but is also a bit offensive, in terms of their idea of what a 'Hungry Ghost' festival is suppose to look like (is that even a thing? Cause I've never seen it in Hong Kong). It could have just been the July Ghost festival with the classic opera and it would have been fine, but yeah...if you don't get the culture do your research. As I said, the story in the later 2 issues is fairly choppy and kinda annoying as we've just had someone try to take over the Squad and now another similar story, is there nothing else to tell with these characters?

Characters: There a bits and pieces of character development still in the Ryan run, with the Deadshot stuff and Harley still dealing with the stuff from the last book. I would have loved more time to look into that, especially the Harley arc, but alas we are back to non-development with the Seeley issues. It's annoying a fuck because if you want us to care about the squad you have to develop the squad for us to care about. I thought Ryan understood that and now a new team comes and it's all action and no thinking once again. Annoyance.

This was not a good book, it started off fine, until Ryan was replaced and now we have a new creative team and we go back to what was wrong with the Suicide Squad book in the first place. Has DC learned nothing? This annoys.

Onward to the next book!

Like volume 2 before it I really enjoyed this one. This volume is the one that brings to Amanda Waller/Vic Sage battle of wits to a head. Through his sneakiness Sage managed to get Waller into a really bad jam, but being Amanda Waller she tries to get the most out of the situation except that her situation involves her dealing with the suicide squad a lot closer than she usually deals with them and a lot less bullet proof glass between her and them.

This one is an action packed battle of wits between two control freaks working the same job and both parties are playing for keeps. This is what you think of when you think comic books, it isn't the smartest, it isn't the most logical, it erupts into over the top violence, but damn if it isn't one enjoyable ride with characters you like or maybe hate.

Amanda Waller finally uncovers the plot designed to take the Squad apart from the inside. She also fires a warning shot at the corporation behind the plot. There's more character studies, and we see a few team members seem to flip-flop as they try to discover their true motivation.

Art isn't bad, and overall another good volume. This was one a little shorter than the others, so not quite as much going on. Still not bad.

This is the best volume so far. It has humor as well as action, but more importantly it shows every character's flaws and insecurities. Even Harley's. And, yes, even Waller's. The movies have nothing on this story.

Waller is ordered to join the Squad on their next mission targetting drug traffickers. It goes bad pretty quickly. They are forced to fight both the traffickers and the police. Upon learning of their failure, Vic Sage labels Waller a traitor and triggers the bombs in the Squad's necks.

In a post-Suicide Squad movie world, this comic does it's best to provide something on par with the film from an action standpoint. Obviously, the story has an ability to stretch much wider here than the film, and it definitely takes advantage of it.
Amanda Waller has been put into the field with Task Force X. When a traitor back at Belle Reve attempts to activate the neck bombs in the squad, only to be thwarted by Waller's desire to not be blown up, the team turns on her and attempts their escape to freedom. Obviously, bickering ensues and much fighting occurs, but the team ultimately ends up back where they started.
This title continues to be quite consistent and I will continue to read it. Recommend.

I almost wanna give this four stars, just for being dramatically clear in its character motivations and straightforward in its plot. The Waller/Mrs Pesta confrontation was legit cool! Sean Ryan, I hope you are somewhere out there getting published without the restrictions of a Big Two Company's editorial mandates!

LOL conflicted/depressed Harley is such a hilarious contrast to the cheery idiot in her solo series! How are they reconciling these two!

Ends with two teasing first issues of solo minis of Deadshot and Katana, who I don't think I'd ever seen in any non-movie incarnation of the Squad before. Didn't mind it - would rather have obvious sales pitches take up book real estate than incomprehensible event crossovers.

I still don't care for Amanda Waller and her motives on anything but she was very entertaining in taking down Vic. She works well with Task Force X because she's like them, doing what she's good at and feeling stuck where she is. They can't go anywhere and neither can she. She's just not behind a prison cell. Harley Quinn continues to have her identity crisis. After the last volume, she doesn't know who she should be and want she wants out of life. It's starting to affect her job performance. I'ma bit sad this series only have four volumes but I'm eager to see how this story arc wraps up.

Amanda Waller learns that Vic Sage is a traitor and is willing to do anything to get rid of Waller and Task Force X aka Sucide Squad. Sean Ryan is back with writing duties along with art by Philippe Briones. Ryan seems to have a better handle on the personalities of the characters this time around but the plot seems like average fair. I did enjoy this volume a lot better than the last two but only by a smidgeon.

The "New" Suicide Squad continues to use only old ideas. Waller and Sage's power grab is boring. Her obvious lies fooling supposedly smart characters is annoying. The plot here is so bland. Author Sean Ryan has completely phoned in this run on the book offering nothing new or interesting. At least the art by Phillip Briones was fine. Overall, another half-hearted effort.

Freedom is a really short arc to conclude the main storyline, Vic Sage managed to break Black Manta out of jail, all hell breaks loose at Belle Reve. We now know the full extent of Task Force X and Waller became a character of loathing once more.

Harley being all emo is getting old fast. Either she needs to try to change, or go back to how she "normally" is. Also, poor Bonnie. She was the only really likable character in the whole book.

It made some good points about how corporations are becoming more important to people than countries. It's all a matter of where we spend our time and money.
