Say whaaaaaaaat?!! Can we please please pause the 5 star reviews because this is so not right.
*Spoiler*
We have Baylee, the 17-year-old female protag, who is abducted by a 40-year-old family friend.
He puts her in a hole for days without food or water ( to "condition" her ) then proceeds to rape (once with a cucumber) and degrade her and she, of course, gets off on the sexual "conditioning".
Thereafter, she is sold for $5m to a young male (War), who REALLY believes he was NOT purchasing a slave because, well, don't women usually dress up in the middle of the night to strut on a stage while men bid for them?
So, I, being the helpful person that I am, will try to reason with the protags:
*War*
"Errrr.... War, this is wrong”
"No, seriously Bibi, I thought I was donating to a noble cause"
"Errr War, how do you explain the scared, handcuffed, female?"
"But...but....isn't she meant as a gift?"
"No War, she was not because, well, you sorta paid for her to be your "companion" and she sort of is being held hostage in your house"
War: "But...but....why are you saying this Bibi, can't you see how panty-dropping-gorgeous I am? Huh? How can someone as scintillating hot, as I, be wrong for buying a companion? Huh? Care to explain that? Huh?"
Bibi:"Well, see 'ere War, you done gone commit a felony 'cause right here in the good ole US of A, human beings cannot be sold. Heck, everybody knows that, where you been hiding? Under a rock?"
War:"But....but, I love her and I will save her and love her. I mean, have you not seen my panty-dropping face and lean-mean hot fuc@%& body? Huh, huh?"
Bibi:"Well then, Ima moosey on along "cause this right here ain't right. Cain't you see that Son? This 'ere ain't right". Ima jes take this lil ole gal back to 'er Mom n Pop 'kay? I ain't fixing for no fight" Okay, lil lady les moosey on".
*Baylee*
"But, Bibi, I don't wanna leave War. Can't you see how hot and panty-dropping-delicious he is? Huh? He is so swoony and surely, someone so swoony can't be that bad?
"So what if he paid $5m to buy me? I mean, yes, he could have just gone out on dates to meet a woman/companion and yes, he probably could have tried meeting women that are actually not minors..but it's all good because he's rich, hot, swoony (did I say swoony already?) and panty-droppingly gorgeous..... So, I will have to respectfully ask you to mind your own business and leave us alone to bask in our "Love". Okay, buster?"
******
And that, readers, is the whole plot. Beginning, middle and ending.
So, respectfully, this here, is one fu%@-up book. With all due respect.

“War is an ocean I’ll never be able to navigate.”

“She is to be my reprieve from the darkness that ebbs and flows inside me-”

“Sometimes, sweetheart, you have to make sacrifices. You, doll, are a sacrifice. Your part is small, but it is so significant.”
“I like ‘em dirty. And you’re as dirty as they come. Soon, you’ll be just as dirty on the inside,” he murmurs against the shell of my ear, sending goosebumps over my flesh. “You’ll like it too. In fact, you’ll love it. One day you will thank me.”
“She is to be my reprieve from the darkness that ebbs and flows inside me—always threatening to swallow me up.”

“Your light is already seeping into the dark parts of my soul and I’m not about to let that slip away for a second. (…)I know I can’t live without that light.”
“For some reason, I don’t obsess over numbers and germs and patterns. Each time you open your mouth, I’m fixated on your words. I’m drawn to the way you say them. When I’m around you, I don’t obsess over my problems because I obsess over you.”

The germs are everywhere. The chance of things going wrong poke at me every second of every day. Images of endless possibilities of my death, torturous thoughts of infection infiltrating my life at every turn, and painful, awful ideas of how others could die inadvertently at my hands flit through my mind continuously on one bloody, disgusting loop.
How many hairs would she lose between now and the drive to my beachfront estate?
I start calculating her hair loss. If she loses an average of forty hairs per day, then that means she will lose one point six seven hairs per hour. The drive is just over an hour which means she could potentially lose two point oh nine hairs. But, if she loses more along the higher end of that spectrum of fifty hairs a day, that would mean she’d lose—
He then heads for the sink where three soap bottles line the back. I watch with brazen fascination as he spends a good five minutes scrubbing his hands with all three soaps.
What if I lost control and sunk my teeth into her lip?
Would the blood spray all over my white kitchen?
Would she bleed out all over the tile, saturating everything in its wake?
“I was angry with him but when he flays open his heart and exposes raw parts of him, I can’t help but be intrigued.”

In my fantasies, I can dream of a better time. One day maybe she’ll laugh with me. Until that time, I’ll dance with her in my head to the melody only she can create.
"Why won’t you move your queen, Bay? It’s the only move.” She starts toward the door but gives me a tender smile. “Because the queen always protects the king.” And then she whispers the last part. “Even from himself.”

My sweet, perfect, counting man.

“After the hell I’ve endured over the past few days, this is heaven. The devil is my savior.”
“With every frown she tries to hide. Every tear she swipes away. Each unanswered email from her parents, I know. She’s nothing but a well-paid prisoner. ”
“I’m a distraction from his mind. The fact that he’s called me Peace only further proves what he thinks of me.”
“I could feel the dark, twisty parts of me infecting every cell, membrane, and bone in my body. I was tainted. With her blood. Their blood. And the disease of my despair. There was no cleansing something so tainted. This was who I was now. This was War.”
“I ran from someone who needs me. He needs me in his world for it to make sense.”
