Abordarea complexa adoptata de Vasiliev – autorul prezentind si comentind nu doar evenimentele politice si militare, ci si relatiile comerciale, viata religioasa si realizarile culturale – face din Istoria Imperiului bizantin cel mai cuprinzator studiu din acest domeniu. Dincolo de bogatia informatiei si acuratetea analizei, cititorul poate contempla spectacolul fascinant al unei mari civilizatii.

Alexander Alexandrovich Vasiliev (Russian: Александр Александрович Васильев) was considered the foremost authority on Byzantine history and culture in the mid-20th century. His History of the Byzantine Empire (vol. 1–2, 1928) remains one of a few comprehensive accounts of the entire Byzantine history, on the par with those authored by Edward Gibbon and Fyodor Uspensky.

Cartea este un gen de "biblie" a Imperiului Bizantin. Autorul reflectă etapele constituirii dar și a destinului Bizanțului, răspândirea creștinismului, cruciadele, proveniența și evoluția turcilor, arabilor etc. până la căderea Constantinopolului și ocuparea acestuia de către turci (1453).

Άριστα γραμμένο, με πολλές λεπτομέρειες και πολλή πληροφορία περί της κάθε σκοπιάς του Βυζαντίου. Ο μεγάλος όγκος του έργου είναι δικαιολογημένος, καθώς δεν υπάρχουν περιττολογίες και ο συγγραφεύς κατορθώνει να προσελκύσει την προσοχή του αναγνώστη. Δεν θα το πρότεινα σε εκείνον που δεν έχει ήδη διαβάσει περί του Βυζαντίου - έστω και ελάχιστα, επειδή δίδεται περισσότερο βάρος στους εσωτερικούς μηχανισμούς της αυτοκρατορίας παρά στην εξιστόρηση των γεγονώτων, η οποία μεν υπάρχει - αλλά είναι σύντομη και εν μέρει θεωρείται δεδομένη. Επίσης υπάρχουν ελάχιστες εικόνες και δίδεται ιδιαίτερη προσοχή στις βιβλιογραφικές αναφόρες - που ίσως να εξουθενώνει μερικούς αναγνώστες.

Το βιβλίο πάντως δεν παύει να είναι αριστουργηματικό. Το προτείνω ανεπιφύλακτα σε εκείνον που θέλει να μελετήσει το ένδοξο Βυζάντιο.

On the plus side the language is simple making the book accesible for all types of readers, the main events of the history of Byzantine Empire are accurately described in an enjoyable narrative. On the minus side I found that the author approaches the subject on a rather schematic manner so I did not have the feeling that I am complety immersed in the events which are portrayed in the book.

Gerçekten müthiş bir tarih kitabı. Tarihsel dönem olarak Konstantinopolis'in kuruluşundan başlıyor (4.yy civarı) Anlatım oldukça güzel, derli toplu. Batı Roma ve Bizans arasında fark , 1 büyük imparatorluğun 2 ayrı imparator tarafından yönetildiği karmaşık dönemlerde olup biten tüm olayları farklı tarihçilerin bakış açılarına göre değerlendirilmiş. Aklımda kalan bazı çarpıcı noktalardan bahsedecek olursam: 1. İslamın doğuşu ve yayıldığı dönemlerin Bizans'ın gözünden nasıl algılandığı ve tarihsel sonuçlarıyla birlikte etkili biçimde anlatılmış. 2. Kuzey'den, Balkanlardan gelen "barbar" saldırıları, bu toplumların Roma'nın içine sızması , Romalılaşması ve hatta imparatorluğun altını oyması. 3. İkonoklastik dönem. Kitabın bazı bölümleri bana fazlaca ağır geldi. Justinianos döneminin yasa çalışmaları, hanedanları uzun uzun anlatıldığı bölümler vs. Ancak buralar istenirse hızlıca da geçilebilir sonuç olarak okuduğunuza asla pişman olmayacağınız bir eser.
