I had to read this for book club but never would have read it on my own. I didn't realize it's part of a series. I enjoyed the first half of the book as as it takes place in the small deep-south town the main character abandoned a long time ago. The second part of the book is basically a third-rate whodunit. There is so much action and too many characters. It was hard to know who was who.
Not bad, but not up to level of previous Will Robie series. I read the Robie series for espionage intrigue not a poorly structured resolve-your-daddy-issues-whodunit.
I read a lot of David Baldacci books because I enjoy his combination of social issues and mystery and sometimes humour. So it is hard to give this book a negative review. The plot was an acceptable one and one I looked forward to exploring as the book opened. However by the second half of the book I had lost count of the number of people killed and the gruesome description of the victims deaths. Maybe that is what the modern consumer of mystery novels crave? I hope not I hope this is a one off for the writer. Had I a wish for this book and others to come is that they would all get back to serious mystery writing and forget about the violence or at least keep it to a measured amount.
When Will Robie, CIA assassin, returns to Cantrel, Mississippi after learning that his father has been arrested for murder, he doesn’t have any idea what to expect. He hasn’t seen his father or Cantrel for 22 years. He hopes to help find his father innocent and wants to repair their relationship which recently has gotten in the way of Will doing his job. What actually awaits him is a veritable rattlesnake nest and the possibility of death at every turn.
A friend gave me a copy of this book and I didn't realise that it was the second in a series by David Baldacci. A complex story line that unfolds slowly, every little bit an enticement to the reader to try and figure out where it all ends. I enjoyed this book so much, I'm going to look for the first in the series to read. A really good read!
This is the second reading of this book. Despite all my records, I still end up reading books, a second time. This is because the people who are helping me get sloppy. However, I enjoyed it just as much and got a lot out of it. Take care of your eyes see your eye doctor at least once a year wear your sunglasses.
I loved this book. I like all of Baldacci ‘s. Book but this one was special. Going to Mississippi because his father was in jail for murder and he had not seen or heard from him in 20 years was amazing . Many people were involved, many people were killed and what a surprised ending!
There are 418 pages in this book and it is easily readable. A LOT happens during the last 30 pages or so...so the check was in the mail and the loose ends needed tying.
Will Robie killed a girl who was four. When he was on an a killer assignment- It was "Collateral Damage"He had to go to Cantrel,Mississippi. His father a Judge for the past ten years was arrested for murder. He hasn't seen his father for twenty years. A study of life in a small town in Cantrel. A serial killer---many deaths-- And relationships with father and son----with daughters and fathers-- and the evil that hides in the so-called respectful lives. This novel has everything!
I enjoy David Baldacci books, but this one started slow, i found myself not wanting to go further but i persevered. The main character Will, is a government assassin, i didn't like that idea, but when he comes home after many years away he is dragged into a personal investigation involving his dad. This bit i really enjoyed, the plot twists and turns and is riveting, i couldn't put it down. Glad i persevered with this one.
The Guilty by David Baldacci is a a mystery full of twists and turns. Just when I think I know where the story is headed, it twists and goes in an unexpected direction. I really enjoyed is and could hardly put it down.
I thought the father-son story/relationship was very contrived. It was not interesting and the characters were not believable. Forced to read ebooks I would not normally read as a result of my library not having the authors or genres I like.
