The Asset by Anna del Mar sounded so good. It had some of my favorite things in it. Military men being at the top of that list, but sadly for me this was just a mediocre read. I thought it started strong, and grabbed my interest. I liked Ash. I liked his damaged testy self. I thought he was sexy, smart, and sweet under all the gruff. I also liked Lia. I thought she was brave, sweet, and a fighter. But I had a few problems with the book. For one the book really dragged for the first half. It took me almost 3 days to read this book, and for me who whips through books within a day most of the time, that is like forever. Also I felt a total disconnect with Lia and Ash's relationship. It felt very superficial to me. I felt like I missed big parts of their relationship which leads to another problem I had with this book. It kinda jumped around. Don't get me wrong jumping forward in books is fine at times, but I felt this book jumped past or just skimmed important details of their relationship that would have helped us readers connect with them, feel their love, understand how they even fell in love to begin with. With that being said. The sex in this book was steaming. Anna del Mar can write some really sexy scenes. Also her bad guy was top notch evil and creepy. This book got dark at times. Lia's past was a hard one to read about. I really liked the other guys in this book especially Will. I wouldn't mind reading Will's book if he gets one. Overall I felt this author and series shows potential. This is her first book in the series, and I am always more lenient when it comes to the first book in a series. Though this wasn't a great hit with me I would give this author another shot. Especially if it's Will's book "HINT HINT".

'The Asset' by Anna del Mar is book one in the "Wounded Warrior" series.
This is the story of Lia Stewart and Ash Hunter.
Lia has been hiding out in the Rocky Mountain cabin that her older friend had left for her. That friend happened to be Ash Hunter's grandmother. Lia is trying to hid from a very abusive relationship and is on edge all the time. Lia posted a room for rent sign in town for what she was hoping would be a female room mate but Ash shows up scaring her at first. Ash was hurt very badly in the military and now just up and left the hospital so he is kind of on the run too. Lia end up taking him in after she learns how sick he is and that he was her friends grandson. Lia has a soft spot for wounded animals and Ash seems to fit right in with that. But Lia is having a hard time with her feeling up being scared around him and also scared that he might be put in danger just being around her.

This was sometimes hard to read book at the end when Lia went over her previous life. In addition Ash was facing some tough heath issue too. This book does have what I thought was a lot of drama and tough story subjects but that is what I understood what I was getting when I checked this book out. So I was not surprised or disappointed. Sometimes it is nice to get a more drama filled romance than my usually boy meets girl and girl falls for boy...then just a misunderstand holds them back...this was not that type of book. Lia was always scared for her feelings for Ash that he might be hurt by the person from her past.
Enjoyed it overall ..exciting read.

Warning: This book contains scenes of torture, and physical-mental-and sexual abuse

This book....

What an incredible, complex, sometimes dark, emotional rollercoaster ride.
There was action, suspense, and broken characters trying to heal physically, emotionally, and mentally.

This is the story of Ash (the returning wounded veteran and prodigal son) and Lia, (a woman on the run- hiding from a very dangerous and powerful man who wants only to hurt, control, and own her) .

This was not what I expected when I first started reading, but as I continued to read and the story began to enfold - Lia (the protagonist) became a warrior in her own right.
What she did and had to do to survive was heart-breaking as well as inspiring.
She no longer was a victim, but a survivor who decided "NO MORE" and did what she had to do to make it so.

The Asset (Wounded Warrior #1) by Anna del Mar is the first book I've read by this author and certainly won't be the last.
She's an excellent story-teller with an uncanny way of bringing all the pieces together at the end of the story.

I can't wait to read the next installment in the "Wounded Warrior" series

WOW! What an amazing debut novel! This is definitely not a "nice romance", it is a suspense filled, stunning novel which has has well portrayed characters, a superb, enthralling plot and is a real page turner. It has two central characters who are both suffering from PTSD but for very different reasons. He was a SEAL who had been seriously wounded, both mentally and physically, in Afghanistan. She has had a father killed in front of her then been physically, sexually and emotionally abused before escaping - she's now running from her abuser, making something of a life for herself but always ready to run again and wary. Together they can help each other heal but danger still threatens and trust is always an issue. Will they stand a chance to find their HEA or will fate be cruel and intervene, preventing their happiness once more?

This is one of those books that I really didn't want to put down till I had finished it.Whilst the romance slowly develops and realistically as the two characters help each other heal the novel also deals with some traumatic issues in a manner that explains what happens but certainly doesn't glorify or excuse them. Filled with suspense as well as some brilliant banter between the characters, it is an engaging read that will stay with me for a long time. The range of secondary characters are also well developed with some other veterans with various injuries from their experiences in the arenas of war as well as a delightful, brave veterinarian and, most amazing of all, a German Shepherd assist dog called Neil! The traumatic events are fast paced, taking the reader into the centre of the action, experiencing the drama with the characters.

It is an action packed read that I have no hesitation in highly recommending, it is definitely one of my favourite reads for this year so far and, I suspect, will still be a favourite for the year.

Ms. Del Mar’s first novel is fantastic start to a new series. It is emotional and not for the faint hearted as there are some triggers in the book mainly rape, pedophilia and physical and mental abuse among other things. Now I have when involving children so to be honest I skipped that part of the book. I have a vivid imagination so I don’t need that in my life.

Ash Hunter did a hospital break as they were threatening to remove part of his leg due to infection. He lands on Lia’s front doorstep with a shotgun to his face.

Lia is scarred from her past and leery of men things start to change when she meets Ash. Lia becomes Ash’s caregiver in exchange for no questions and protection for the moment from a mountain lion but the one who is still looking is a lot more dangerous.

I don’t want to give too much away so I’ll leave it at the review that I’ve posted. Consider it short and sweet, this review not the book.

Ms. Del Mar writes well and it flows well with humor and banter making me smile at the beginning. Now I personally think that this is worth a read so go get a copy. Pronto!
Now this is just me but I really want to read some romantic suspense with different characters not always the same old, same old.

This is my personal opinion therefore it should be taken at face value, nothing more, and nothing less.

The Asset started off strong but after the initial meeting between Lia and Ash it started to fizzle and honestly I struggled to get through the first half of the book. Once the suspense aspect started to pick up I was intrigued but after feeling such a disconnect it was hard for me to really enjoy this one. No star rating for now...

4.5 Stars round up....

I slated this book to be read while I walked on the treadmill. If I wanted to read, I had to walk. I used it as my exercise incentive and it worked. I walked a lot more trying to read this book than I did without the incentive.

I found the plot gripping and intense with characters who totally captivated me.

I really liked both Ash and Lia and was intrigued with their respective stories as well as the building of feelings between them. Their characters were well developed and although wounded and scarred they both had an inner strength that kept them going. Their respective strengths and weaknesses complimented each other and they really felt like they fit together.

I was pulled immediately into Lia's story and her heart wrenching past. (Note: This book does contain triggers for rape and being held captive.) Ash was the perfect warrior to rescue her from a man who had a sick obsession of her and she in turn was what Ash needed after his tragic wounds in Afghanistan. This book does show what wounded warriors are faced with on the home front.

I'm a sucker for dogs/pets in books and really liked the incorporation of Neil, Ash's German Shepherd service dog. The dog's character was very developed and the dog's service aspect was handled very well in the story. I would have liked a little more development of some of the "other" human secondary characters.

Very impressed with this debut author and would read more in this series.

Me gusto mucho!

I don’t usually read m/f romantic suspense, but the description of this book reeled me in. The heroine –Lia– is hiding out in a small Rocky Mountain town from a deadly cartel, when Ash knocks on her door looking to rent a room. She is damaged on the inside, but he is damaged inside and out by his service in Afghanistan. They recognize something kindred in each other, and a friendship is born. As it turns into something more, all of Lia’s secrets begin to come out, and Ash puts himself on the line to keep her safe.

Overall, I enjoyed the story, though I did have a few small complaints. Ash is great hero material. He is strong, but also vulnerable because of his injuries and PTSD. At first, we really only see the vulnerability in Lia, but her strength becomes apparent as her story unfolds.

I liked the way the relationship between these two evolved. The way Lia took on the role as Ash’s caretaker was a little flimsy, but otherwise I believed in the steady growth of their relationship. I liked their friendship and the little glimpses of something more. This was a slow burn –and it needed to be. In fact, once we learned the details of Lia’s history, it was hard for me to believe she could ever let a man touch her at all. I like that she had a chance to be a white knight for Ash before he returned the favor to come to her rescue as well.

I felt like I really understood Lia’s character, especially once I learned what happened to her. It was a little less so with Ash. We know he’s a war hero and a good guy, but that’s about it. It’s enough, I guess, for the story’s purpose, but I would have liked to have known him better, especially since he was the draw for me to pick up the book. Overall, though, I liked him –and I liked him with Lia, which is the most important thing.

The things that I liked less about the book all had one thing in common –that they felt over the top. Lia’s history for instance? I expected bad, but not that bad. It was… a lot. Then, there was how Ash resolved things. I don’t want to spoil the details, but again, nothing so simple as testifying against the bad guy or just blowing him away. It’s all so… unrealistic. Now I said at the beginning that this isn’t my normal genre. Maybe it’s just accepted that you go big or go home. But it gave me pause.

The book does live up to the promise of its premise, and it’s the start of a new series. So if wounded warriors are your cuppa tea and you like Dire Circumstances with a side of Extreme Measures, I’d suggest you give this one a try.

The Asset is a book with an agenda, but it’s an agenda I can get on board with if it’s done right. My father is a disabled vet and I have many friends and family members who are military so wounded warriors are a subject near and dear to my heart. The book showcases what veterans deal with once they get home. Before you read this story, be aware that it is full of some pretty heavy hitting triggers.

Ash, our hero who was wounded in action, checked himself out of the hospital against orders. He had a serious infection in his leg and the military doctors were talking about amputating. Being a special ops type soldier was what he loved to do and losing a leg meant that he would no longer be able to do that. Lia is on the run from a cartel, specifically the head of this particular cartel. Her past is doled out as the story unfolds and it is not a good one. She does not get close to anyone so that they don’t become targets because of her. Lia suffers from PTSD since she had some seriously horrific things happen to her.

The bulk of the book is spent on Ash and Lia meeting and getting to know one another. As much as I liked both of them, the pace was excruciatingly slow. I found myself constantly checking the percent read bar and being bummed by how slow it was moving forward. As slow as it was, key events weren’t “shown” to us, but told to us after the fact. For instance, when Ash was battling the infection and fever there were lots of interesting things happened liked Lia calling Jordan in, her friend who’s a veterinarian. Ash is so out of it, he broke Jordan’s nose while being treated yet we are told about it after the fact. Jordan had some key scenes, plus a crush on Lia so it felt like some important things were lost by not being in on that scene from the front end

We get to meet Ash’s friends composed of wounded vets with different issues. We didn’t get to know these guys very well other than what their different diagnosis’ were and how this affected them. I would have loved to get to know them for something besides what their medical problems were.

It was not until the last 25% or so until the pace really took off. Then it went from going too slow, to taking off at warp speed then hitting the ditch. Once the bad guy starts getting close, the plot holes just started multiplying. Red, the man Lia’s running from and who got away with so many things was so over the top evil he ended up a caricature instead of a believable character. Lia’s protection detail seemed made up of a group based on their wounded status vs. who would have been best to protect her. The worst plan ever to catch a bad guy was put together and implemented. Before all the action picked up, I liked Ash and Lia well enough, but then both of them started doing TSTL things. It was just too much and ended up really ruining the book for me. I’m surprised I didn’t dislodge my eyes with all the eye-rolling I had going on.

Even the underlying attempt to showcase wounded vets went off the rails. It went too far, and tried to put a spotlight on so many issues the message got lost in the shuffle. It talked about all different types of injuries, brain, amputations, PTSD, you name it, and it was in there. It talked about vets having problems finding jobs, prejudices back home, family issues, girlfriends leaving. The problems with government red tape, the poor care a lot of vets are given through the VA system, even problems getting appointments. It felt contrived and preachy at times. Maybe just concentrating on Ash’s issues with his possible amputation and his problems with VA red tape would have made for an easier to read book that would have more of a chance of resonating with a reader.

All in all a disappointing read, especially when I was so excited about the subject matter.

Spice’s rating: 2.5 “In the ditch” stars

Warning: this book has some seriously horrific scenes that may be triggers, including rape, pedophilia, murder and physical, emotional and mental abuse.

I loved THE ASSET for a lot of reasons, but most of all for the message that people shouldn't automatically discount a wounded vet…once a warrior, always a warrior. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!

Lia Stewart is on the run from a very dangerous man. Marine Corps Officer and Navy SEAL Ashton Hunter is on the run from himself, his family, the US government… he just wants to be left alone to attempt to heal from the bomb that killed most of his team and came thisclose to killing him. Lia nurses him back to health and somehow finds herself volunteering to be his official caregiver so Ash can avoid being taken into custody and returned to the hospital he escaped from. As the pair get to know one another, love blossoms in the most unlikely of circumstances, and the healing starts to begin for them both. But Lia's monster will never let her go, and Ash isn't above asking for help from his friends when it comes to Lia's safety.

I really REALLY loved THE ASSET, the first in the planned Wounded Warriors series. Ash was a freakin' fantastic hero, one that women can both swoon over and be in awe of. Lia was also incredible, such a survivor and a strong, independent woman despite the terribly shitty life hand she'd been dealt. They're both severely damaged and PTSD sufferers, but while Lia refuses to consider Ash and her in terms of the future, Ash knows he's met the one for him almost immediately. His patience and understanding lead Lia to finally let down her guard and let him in. And when Ash's friends came, all wounded war veterans themselves, they surrounded her and protected her despite their own handicaps. The sex scenes were erotic, yet very tasteful and loving, and they made complete sense in the context of this book, which I appreciated.

The intrigue and danger elements of this book were extremely well written and played out. Additionally, the story was fast paced without being overdone. And when everything came to a head, I felt like I was balancing on a tight wire of tension, it was excellent! There was also a surprising thread of humor throughout, mostly from Ash's character, and it led a bit of relief to a pretty heavy and sometimes horrifically disturbing storyline.

Bottom Line: This is a must read for fans of romantic suspense, and I'm super excited to read more from this very talented author about this very intriguing group of wounded warriors. - See more at: http://www.theromancereviews.com/view...

Diving into this book, it literally left off of where the synopsis finished. I was unsure how that was going to play out as the author would have to give the characters flashbacks in order for the audience to catch up. I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this book. Military romance is one of my favorite genres and it is hard to find really good ones that will stay with you. I could not put this book down and literally debated on why sleep was important. It has been awhile since a book has grabbed me in such a way.
Lia is a woman who is running from her past and Ash is haunted by his. They form a tentative friendship due to Neil, an amazing German Shepard, and Ash’s grandmother Wynona who takes in Lia when she first arrives to town. Lia has a healer spirit and cannot in her right mind send a wounded vet on his way just to satisfy her paranoia.
The way their friendship goes it is a slow romance as they learn to trust each other and help each other fight their demons. Sadly, there are a few parts in the novel that could have been left out or Lia could have come clean so that certain events did not play out the way they did. Sometimes, I just wanted to shake Lia because of her paranoia since there were good people on her side.
It was a slow build up to the bad guy, aka Red, but once in the picture, ooh man! He literally justified what he did and he was content in his delusion. It is amazing what money can buy. I loved each of the characters except Charlie. I am so glad he got what was coming to him. I really hope we get to hear more of Wang, Will, Jordan, and the others.

Trying to survive from a deadly past that torments her, Lia Stewart is hiding in a small Rocky Mountain town until, one day, a wounded warrior with a dog shows on her doorstep; a gravely injured SEAL with a heart and soul just as tortured as hers. Against her best judgment, she decides to help him – a kind act that may cost her life.

The Asset by Anna del Mar is an emotionally compelling and sizzling romance, has two protagonists to die for, a well-thought out plot with carefully-timed, revealing twists, mounting tension, and thrills that will keep you turning pages.

From the beginning, I was hooked with the story and mystery. I was also impressed with the quality of the writing and the emotionally compelling aspect of the romance as it evolved between Lia and Ash. The backstory was deftly handled by this promising author. Bits and pieces of information about the characters and their stories bring one to light as the story progresses. Each new revelation seems to be more important then the previous one and adds to the novel’s sense of impending danger as it approaches the climax.

Aside from the lead characters there is also a lethal antagonist and an adorable German shepherd in the mix. While the former is of course important to the plot line, the latter gives the story, and readers, needed breaks from the tension.

Anna del Mar is an exciting new name in the steamy romance genre and I look forward to reading more from her. If you love romance, especially military romance, this is a must read!

This was an emotional roller coaster ride for me like no other! I should warn you that this is anything but the nice and sweet romance you may be thinking. It is dark at times and filled with suspense. Lia is on the run and hiding from a man who is not only very dangerous and powerful but also who wants only to hurt her among other things. While Ash is a wounded Navy SEAL who is also running from his own demons. Both suffer PTSD and while they both can help heal one another danger is always right around the corner.

The asset is super ex-military love story. I loved the writing. I usually miss when there is no H POV but in this book I didn't miss it at all.
Lia story was heartbreaking and I loved how strong and capable Ash saw her. And he did everything in his power to make her even stronger. Lia was amazing prepare to sacrifice herself rather that other person die because of her. The story was simply amazing. I loved how did the author unwrapped the story. Book is intense had me on the edge the whole time. I liked the scary part the love part the sex part the animal part and I love when authors give the contribution to the VET.

Great story highly recommended!

A surprisingly gripping read, despite the amount of second-guessing involved and the several bizarre dialogues between a rock-solid pairing of a scarred, broken ex-soldier and a woman who has triumphed over a nightmare of a past. Anna del Mar doesn't shy away from the brutality of rape or the violence that women - or of victims in general - face and apart from some questionable actions on Ash's part, this was overall, a solid read that makes me wonder what the second installment already is about.

I liked the premise of The Asset and I liked the start of it. The writing was also well done. What I did not like were the inconsistencies with how horribly controlling and deceptive Ash was towards the end of the book. Ash baiting Red (the protagonist) with a sex tape that he had made in secret about Lia was just NOT appropriate in my mind. And yes it should have been considered "inconceivable, dangerous and daring" - mostly inconceivable and remained so. And if a "highly confident, top notch professional" etc etc chose to do something like this to another human without their consent, I'm pretty sure it would be considered anything but "professional".
And the lying that occurred on top of the deceptions. Like when Ash said he had cut his foot but instead had had a microchip installed.
I just think that if you had been in a situation like Lia with abduction, murder, kidnap and abuse ok maybe lying and deception are soft boundaries she could overlook. I haven't been in her shoes so I won't judge her decisions. But they didn't work for me while I as reading the book. It made me quite cross with Ash.
Other than those issues that book was good but I'm taking two stars off because I couldn't REALLY like it.

Excellent Story

This was an excellent suspense and romance. Lia was on the run from a powerful bad man. Ash was trying to recover from his wounds. I really liked the team of disabled vets that he put together to protect her. Both Ash and Lia had PTSD and it made their actions and reactions more poignant.

Anna del Mar is quite unlike any other romance author I've ever read: there's something captivating about her writing that just draws me in and won't let me go until I'm finished with the book. The plot for this story was different to any other and I loved the characters. This author has such a way with words, and I would quite happily read her retelling of the phone book! If you ever want to get lost in a good book, try one of Ms del Mar's.

“The Asset” by Anna del Mar is part of the ‘Wounded Warrior’ series and is a romantic suspense story that follows Lia Stuart who unwillingly acquires a roommate/tenant named Asher (Ash) Hunter and his Wounded Warrior dog, Neil. Finding a way to help Ash heal from some of his wounds forces Lia to expose far more of her own issues than she is comfortable with, and their burgeoning relationship may have fatal consequences.

The unexpected twists to this exciting story kept me enthralled until the last fascinating word. One should be forewarned that this is a very gritty story with sometimes gut-wrenching scenes that evoke the price paid by those who go to war, and sometimes paid by those who are innocents in an evil situation. I love the way the author vividly creates tension-filled situations that show the strength that each of these characters has acquired while craftily revealing snippets of the background that has shaped them. The reader is buffeted by tension and fear throughout the story yet a wonderful sense of camaraderie and affection is gradually coaxed into being, just as occurs within the story itself. I had not realized at first that I had already encountered this author’s dexterity at presenting vivid and tortured characters, but once I made the connection to her fantasy books, the ‘Stonewiser’ series, I was reminded of how memorable her characters have been for me.

I always have a soft spot for stories that feature military heroes who are trying to find a way to deal with the horrors they have dealt with and rejoice when they find someone to help ease their burdens. The connection that forms over a common issue of PTSD is both heartbreaking and a beautiful unfolding to observe. The combination of the therapy dog who is able to use his training to treat both of the main characters, the wry humor that breaks up the tension at times (e.g. vet treating the vet), the poignant flashbacks, and the persistence and determination that are hallmarks of the characters’ personalities make this a wonderful start to the series and I can only hope that future stories continue to showcase such compelling characters in equally exciting and mesmerizing situations.

Fascinating romantic suspense story, built in a fresh, unique way, giving a different look at the action, and the psychological angle to the terror and dread.
The story is told in the first person, from only Lia's point of view. Usually I'm not a big fan of that way to tell the story, but here it was done in a brilliant way, still giving a full rounded picture of the events, but in a rare way, giving a glimpse into Lia's mind, to the fear, horror she had lived through, to the panic and paranoia she suffered from, and to the love and passion, care and adoration she experienced, for the first time in her life, with Ash.
Also, the way Lia's voice was telling the story, the reader gets a chilling concept of her previous life in capture. Through her flashbacks, and memories, the cruel, harsh and sadistic handling she received is told in details, and not appropriate for the faint at heart.
Some of the twists in the plot comes from the fact, that the reader sees and knows only what Lia does, and surprises for her, are also surprises for the reader. But the suspense is intense, the whole story is wrapped around of feelings of urgency, threat, and deadly panic for the lives of the main characters.
The action comes with crimson, bloody, cruel violence, going into details, that will test the reader, taking the story into another level. I want to emphasize the fact, that if the reader has an issue, problem with violence towards a woman, this book might not be for them, no matter how well the matter is dealt with in the story.
The romance between Ash and Lia is fragile, because of Lia's past. There's patience, acceptance, caring, adoration, love, and passion. The feelings grow over time, while they both experience the healing of both mind and body within each others care. I loved how they came together, how they found the common ground, the way to communicate with each other, how they fought to survive, and seek more from life.
This story goes deep, with both suspense, and in romance. It has a unique tone, it has a different angle, it allures with the twists, it fascinates with the characters and their faith in life, and it makes you take notice with the intense, fiery, violent action. Highly recommend with

There are a ton of romance books out there that star a hero from the war coming home in one situation or another. A good deal of them don’t delve into how our servicemen don’t come home in the same condition that they were in when they left. There has been some mention of PTSD, but how it was handled in some books just put me off of finishing them or reading more from that author.
Yeah mental injuries aren’t always sexy, they all aren’t labeled the same way and I applaud the fact that Del Mar showed several other injuries that members of our military service members come home with. Ash’s crew has a good showing of those injuries, like Will’s brain trauma. I loved how Lia was able to calm him down once she had learned the extent of his injuries and what worked to help. Hearing yourself say stuff you have no control over ... speaking from personal experience is scary as hell.
I *loved* how DelMar gave Ash a service dog. I’m a firm believer that service dogs can help. I even chose a local charity ( TADSAW - Train a Dog Save a Warrior) for my charity with smile.amazon.com. With how much I buy at Amazon maybe my little bit will turn into a bigger bit.
Both of them have some extreme faults, been through some hellacious personal events, and have some hang-ups. The romance wasn’t one of those wham bam thank you omg we’re in love things. It progressed in a natural seeming way. Things weren’t easy and there was no mashing of magical genitals to make things better.
Good grief she has been through some serious shit. I mean I can’t recall ever reading something in a book similar to this type of shit serious. I loved how this book wasn’t afraid to put out people’s faults or hang-ups. I wasn’t too thrilled about the federal agent trying to say that his crew couldn’t protect her because of their injuries ... guess they showed you at the end huh?
Without gushing more about the book I will just say that I really liked it and appreciated the work used in making it not be like those cookie cutter romance books out there dealing with a similar setup. I will definitely read the next book in the series.

AWOL from the military hospital, Ash Hunter knows what is to run so he realizes the beautiful stranger in his grandmother’s isolated cottage is just as tormented as he is in this gripping and exhilarating romantic suspense.

Lia Stewart barely escaped with her life and now she’s only just surviving and the reader can’t help but be captivated as Lia steps up to care for the wounded warrior on her doorstep despite her fears. The attraction between Lia and Ash smolders throughout the story as the relationship slowly overcomes all the obstacles that the emotional turbulence and tormented past throws in their way which grips the readers by the heart. The characters are strong and easily draw readers into their story as the steady to fast paced plot keeps readers on the edge of their seats with lots of suspense, turmoil, excitement and romance.

The reader is caught in the characters’ web from the very beginning as the suspense and the turmoil of their relationship builds tension throughout the story and keeps readers wondering whether two such wounded souls can overcome the past with adrenaline pumping suspense building as the evil from Lia’s past invades the present with Ash providing quite a few unexpected twist and keeping everyone on their toes including Lia. The scenes are well written with great details that captures the imagination and make it easy for the reader to become immersed in the story and relate to the characters while the intriguing events hold them hostage throughout.

It’s almost like the story is in two parts, because the first half is all about the Lia and Ash tiptoeing around each other and learning to trust and then bam the danger escalates and the story is about stopping an evil SOB but it obviously is the way the story is supposed to be because I was glued to the pages from the very beginning and couldn’t put it down so in my opinion Anna del Mar’s debut novel is a success and I can’t wait to read her next book.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

Lia and Ash are both tormented by the trauma in their lives. Ash from serving in the military and Lia from a crazed man who thought he owned her.

Ash went AWOL from the hospital and showed up on Lia's doorstep to rent a room. They did not hit it off well at all, needless to say. Then she finds out that he is the grandson of the woman who Lia felt saved her.

Ash knows she has some real trauma but she will have no questions. The marines have come looking for him and she tells them she is his girlfriend and will be his caretaker. As long as he goes to his doctor and therapy appointments, they will be happy. They are just happy to not have to deal with his cranky, stubborn ways.

Even though neither of them want questions asked, they start to get along very well. Of course there is an attraction there but Lia knows she can never give in because it could mean Ash's death.

How long can they continue......

I have to say, I was very surprised by this book. I knew it would deal with Ash's issues but it also deeply went into what had happened to Lia to get her where she is today. Ash is cranky and surly in the beginning but pain and drugs will do that!, he ends up just being so brilliant and very caring.

Ash had grown in town and I really felt bad when some of the people were more interested to see if he were lame or still had all his limbs, or was mentally deficient. In the end though, he brought the whole town together. No one would ever think him a gimp again!

He also brought out a whole new Lia. Once she felt safe, Lia could actually start to learn to live but she wouldn't do it without s fight.

Great read! Great characters! I highly recommend it!

Wow! What an emotional roller coaster! I had put off reading this for a while since I was unfamiliar with the author and unsure whether I would like it. Once I finally did start reading it though, I was hooked in pretty quick. Ash was pretty gruff, and Lia was pretty skittish, but once they got used to each other they made a nice partnership. I really loved both of them. I completely identified with Ash's struggles to get proper medical treatment as a veteran. Having spent years trying to gain treatment through the VA system for my dad, I found the lack of concern, unbelievable difficulty in obtaining appointments, overmedication, and the use of only whatever medical treatments were quickest and cheapest to be typical of our experiences and therefore very realistic. Though I found some people's treatment of the disabled vets in this story abhorrent, I feel sure vets have to deal with these issues daily.

As for Ash and Lia, the best part of their relationship was that without their painful and terrifying pasts, they never would have understood each other. They used their pain as fuel to protect them and propel them into the future. Ash brought in other disabled veteran friends to help protect Lia from a criminal mastermind who viewed her as property he wants returned, and I adored the quirky team. When things don't go as planned, Ash is prepared to give every part of himself to keep his promise to protect Lia.

This was a well written engrossing story that kept me riveted. I enjoyed it completely and would love to see the rest of Ash's buddies get their own stories.

I received an ARC from Net Galley for review.

Wounded they may but with intelligence, strength, planning and patience both Lia and Ash manage to overcome the odds, begin dealing with their PTSD and find the strength required to move forward positively with their lives.

Lia has suffered a past that none of us would wish to encounter. A glimpse of what she has endured is not revealed till more than halfway through the book - and then - only because it is essential that she share it with Ash. What she has endured and managed to survive makes her a true warrior and survivor.

Ash has worked his way up in the military and seen action in various places around the world. He has lost friends and suffered injuries that may very well change his live in the future. He arrives on Lia’s doorstep near death’s door and almost leaves…until Neil, his canine companion, steps in.

This is an intriguing story of developing friendship, caring, sharing and trust. I loved both characters and hoped they would get their happily ever after. When the men that came to assist Ash toward the end of the story arrived the action intensified and the stage was set for future books in the series. I truly look forward to finding out more about Ash’s business partner, Manny, Will, Wang, Jordan and perhaps others that may make their way into this series.

Anna del Mar has a great future as an author if this, her debut novel, is any indication of the caliber of stories she has to tell!

Thank you to NetGalley and Carina Press for the copy of this ARC to read and review.

I give this book 5 hearts

As a reviewer I am sent books without knowing what they are going to be about... I enjoy it that way so every book starts with a clean slate and no preconceived notions.
That said I loved this story, from Lia's love of animals and dark past to her strength in not being a victim when it's so much easier to give up then stand up.
Ashton (and his amazing dog Neil who you will fall In love with) comes into Lia's life much the same way the animals she loves do, he's injured on the run and without anybody else to care for him he won't last long. Little does she know fate has thrown her a knight in shining armor ( in a sexy war vet package that has a bad temper and needs a little TLC) although not to rescue her but to lend her strength and show her how amazing she really is. I don't want to say give away much because this is a story that is best read without knowing what's going to happen.

However I will say that as a warning to those that dislike this type of scenario Lia's past is hard to read it's violent, sexually abusive, degrading and really just vile. Although the writing is superb it does make it that much more visual and real for the reader.

If your anything like me you'll fall in love with these two wonderful people as they find strength, trust, passion and love in each other.
