His Light in the Dark

Rate this book
My first memory was of a slap, hard across the face: the sting on my cheek and the jarring of my bones as I slammed back into my bed. It was my dad who had hit me.
I had been four.
Most of my memories were much of the same and no one ever saw, no one ever fought to help, no one ever cared.
Then we moved.
My new neighbor cared, rescued the twelve-year-old I had been from a beating. Always thought I'd suffer the nightmare alone, I was wrong.
Mace Donati saved me that day in all the ways a person could be saved.
And his daughter, Mia, she became the friend I had always wanted, my conscience when my own faltered, the light that led me home when I had lost my way.
The girl who grew into the only woman I would ever love.
But when you realize you're more like your father than the good people who took you in and gave you a home, the only way to return their kindness is to let them go.
I let them go, got so far lost in the shadows I couldn't remember who I was anymore. Mia never gave up on me. She fought for me, kept the light on so I'd find my way back.
And when I did, life threw us a curveball. I had to hurt Mia in order to save her.
But when my past comes back to haunt me and I almost lose her, I'm ready to fight for her...fight to find a way back into her heart while keeping the demons from my past from finishing what they started.

This is my first read by this author and I enjoyed the characters, the writing, and the suspenseful storyline. However, condensing the story would have moved it along a bit more for me because the pacing was very slow at times. It felt like the hero and heroine would never get together and sadly if not for the mystery aspect I might have given up on this couple.

The story is told in ‘parts” as the hero and heroine are 12 and 7 years old when they meet. Cole is rescued from his abusive father by the kick ass single dad next door. Mia’s dad, Mace was an amazing character whom could have been the lead because for me he was sexy, tough and just wonderful.

”Don’t let the unfortunate circumstances of your childhood dictate the rest of your life. Reach for the star, Cole, I’ll help you.”

description

Mace and young Mia take Cole into their home and try to protect him until one day when Cole must stand on his own against his father. Thereafter, Cole feels less than and keeps the only people that matter to him at a distance. Eventually Mace takes Cole back under his wing and gives him honest work at his garage and though Mia tries to reconnect with her childhood friend he continues to keep his distance from the young girl who has turned into a beautiful woman.

The years go by and by and a reader waits on Cole to get his head out of his pity party ass and stop hooking up with random women and embrace what he could have with Mia.

description

"Why do you do that? Stay back in the shadows like it's the only place you belong?" His easy grin faded and yet I hadn't a clue what he was thinking.

"It's where I belong."

Big money comes to town taking over mom and pop shops, while some sleazy men seem to be putting pressure on Mace for his garage. A accident or what appears to be one takes place which leads to Mia asking questions and land herself on the radar of some dangerous people. Cole’s investigating skills on his own were pretty crappy. Up until Mia approaches him with things that don’t add up to her, he didn’t come up with anything really on his own.

To my great disappointment, I got all sorts of annoyed when the reveals seemed so very obvious.

description

However, the author wasn’t done with her reveals and twists. I totally didn’t see the last one coming so kudos because that was very well played!

description

If the story was only condensed to quicken the pace and the hero would have moved faster out of his protect Mia from himself plight, cut out the spanking jokes, and the scene with the woman in his office, this could have been a full 5 star read for me. I'll be watching to see what this author writes in the future for sure!

Genre: Romantic Suspense
Type: Standalone
POV: First Person - Dual
Rating:

Cole Campbell grew up without knowing what a real family was like. When a concerned neighbor saved him from further nightmare, they took him in as part of their small family. For a few years he thrived with them, until his darkness pulled him away.

Mia Donati had a crush on Cole from the first moment they met. She watched him transformed from a sad little boy to a man women lusted after. Even when he pushed her away, she never accepted defeat. However, she failed to realize that some things are better left untouched.

One of the reasons why I chose to read this book was the childhood friendship element. I love seeing how characters evolved (for better or worse) as they grew up.

I hated that just looking at him made my knees weak. He looked dangerous, heart-throbbingly sexy, but dangerous.

I like how Mia always saw good in others even though at time it could be incredibly naïve. I also like how she had spunk and a go getter.

Cole was loyal to the people he cared about. Even though it might not be the best choices, I like the path he took in his life.

My favorite character in the book was actually Mace, her dad. I just adored that man and the things he did.

"You’ve been so many things to me. A friend when I needed one, a savior when I needed one, a crush when I was old enough to understand those feelings and an anchor when my world fell apart."

I like Mia and Cole individually, but I was never really convinced of them as a couple. In part one of the book, there were several mini timeline jumps. I don’t normally have problem with it, but the way it was done felt so disjointed

"There are monsters in your dark, maybe this will help keep those monsters away."

In the middle of the book, the story felt dragged on and I was really worried with the ending because I knew the revelation would be anti-climactic since the answer was clear as day. I’m glad there was still something that saved the ending. As much as I like the final twist, I do however felt the things that happened after that were too much for my personal liking.

His Light In The Dark is a story of a couple’s journey through the years and how life changes them and taught them what it’s like to belong.

Well I have to say I really enjoyed this book. It really played with my emotions. This book takes you on the roller coaster that is Mia and Cole's relationship.

***About the story***
Cole’s father took his child’s soul, so fragile, and shattered it with the hammer of his abuse. Mace was a neighbor who as soon as he witnessed Cole’s abuse, he took him under his wing to protect him from his abusive father. Cole felt for the first time such a feeling of belonging and family! Mace’s daughter, Mia, was at that time about eight years old, five years younger than Cole, and the two instantly became best friends. I’m going to remain spoiler free here and just say that you go through one hell of an emotional ride. Cole’s self-destructive behavior makes him a ticking time bomb and hopefully Mia won’t end up as collateral damage in his shadowy life. He’ll do his best to keep her out of the dark. He cares too much for her, but the only way to protect her is to keep his distance and let her light shine out of his dark world.

***My thoughts***
Mia and Cole were written wonderful and I felt like I really knew the characters. I will be honest and tell you that I did not like Mia very much. She knows that Cole is trouble, she knows that he wants her and although he coldly pushes her away, she pursues him blindly. And this lasts for years. It bothers me that she chases after him losing her dignity. From the very beginning, we feel the deep love that connects the hero and the heroine and the lust which is all well and good. I’d prefer love to have taken longer to develop fully and deepen. In this story, love is straightforward from the beginning and the greatest part of the book is dedicated to Mia and Cole’s back and forth relationship.
I just wanted them to be together so badly, I kept hoping each time I turned the page it would happen for those two. The story I think was filled with too much anticipation. But there are other moments in the book that make the hell of Mia and Cole worth it. To conclude, it was a great book with a sweet and well deserved but way late ending.

ARC was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.

As soon as I read the blurb, I knew I needed to read this one. I love the whole "friends to lovers" theme, and the fact that they were just kids when they met and became so much more as adults is what had me diving into this one.

Cole Campbell had been suffering years of abuse at the hand of his father. It came to the point where he thought it would never be good for him. Things changed when they moved into a new town when Cole was twelve years old. One day, when his drunkard father was beating him, he never thought that someone would save him. That is exactly what happened when Mace Donati came into his life with his seven year old daughter Mia.

Mia and her father Mace, practically adopt Cole into their family. This is the first time Cole has ever felt wanted, loved, and cared for. They helped a lost boy find himself and find his way into the light, after so many years in the darkness. Things didn't always stay good and happy for Cole, and one event led him to be separated from the Donati family for a few years. However, Mace and Mia were always there waiting for him. Cole, thinking he wasn't good enough, got involved in some bad things and decided to stay away from them. But, the Donati's are very persistent, they aren't going to let Cole walk away without a fight.

As soon as the book started my heart broke for Cole. I hated all he had to endure at such a young age, and it maddened me so much that no one ever stepped in earlier when they knew what was happening in his house. I loved seeing him grow and have a wonderful role model like Mace come into his life. Mace was such an amazing father, I loved the connection he shared with Mia. It was just so heartwarming. And seeing Mia and Cole become best friends as kids was so sweet. I loved that their relationship spanned many years.

I very much enjoyed the first third of the book. It kept me very interested, but something happened on the second part. I struggled to keep reading because I became so frustrated. I liked Mia, but that changed a bit during this time. I got that she fell for Cole, but he kept pushing her away and I don't know how she kept going back. I was becoming fed up with the whole "I want you, but I can't be with you" thing that kept going on and on and on. It just felt liked it dragged on for me. I didn't care for Cole's hot and cold attitude either during this part of the book. I felt like Mia really tried to fight for Cole to be in her life--even if Cole didn't really deserve it with how he behaved--but, Cole didn't really fight enough for her. Sure I loved how Cole protected her from a distance and wanted her to remain safe, but something needed to happen sooner. I also could have done without Cole and that woman, just no. About this time is when I could no longer feel a connection between Cole and Mia.

The mystery aspect although quite interesting wasn't enough for me because I wasn't getting too much info on it during this middle portion of the book. There were a few clues, and I had a hunch about who was involved which ended up being true. I just needed a little more too keep me interested. The last third of the book really picked up. Everything came out of the box all at once and I kept turning the page to find out more. My guesses were right, so it was great to read how it all happened. I wanted to give major kudos to the author for that last twist. I was not expecting that at all. I was very pleasantly surprised by it and was left with mouth hanging open in shock.

Overall, this book wasn't perfect but it was still good. There was mystery, angst, and drama. I would have enjoyed it more if it were shorter and it had less of those filler scenes like that woman scene. Nonetheless, a good book.

Cole and Mia's story begins years ago when he moves in next door to her.
Both only have their Dads left. Their moms disappeard forever ago.

The only difference is: Mia's Dad is the most perfect Dad a little girl could ever wish for.
And Cole's Dad is a mean, angry, violent Drunk!

One of those hitting sessions, when Cole was 12, was witnessed by Mace, Mia's Dad, and he stepped in to rescue Cole.
That's how he ends up staying next door most of the time.

But then, when Cole is 15, something happens that sends Cole away for a few years. And once he's back he thinks he's not good enough anymore for the Donatis.

But Mia never forgot him and her Dad never stopped fighting for him.

This book covers a lot of years - from when Mia was 7 all the way until after College....
Lots of things happen and most of those things are stopping Cole from being with Mia ...

WHAT WiLL HAPPEN WiTH MiA & COLE???
WiLL THERE BE A HEA???
WiLL THERE BE A HORRiBLE CLiFFHANGER???

I REALLY LOoOVED THE BOOK!

Ugh, such a beautiful story.
You fall in love with little Cole during the first line you read.
And you just want to cry and hug him all through the book.

description

He's had such a horrible childhood, until he met the Donatis...
And Mia.
Such a sweet and adorable little girl.
She's all glitter and princesses and Cinderella on DVD.
One would think her big, tattoed Dad wouldn't know what to do with such a child, but he's just perfect with her. And with Cole too.

When Cole is 15 and this thing happens, and even before...you just want to close the book and stop reading - afraid of whatever bad thing is coming :(

description

But of course you won't stop reading. ☺ You just HAVE to know how Mia and Cole's story will end - or rather, how their love story will get started in the first place...

I really enjoyed reading it.
It was my first Fiore book - and I don't know - it's probably just me being weird, but I had some huge problems with her writing :/
She sounds very british here and there, and this story is set in Philadelphia, so there shouldn't be any britishness in there. And the way she lets people talk. Little Mia talks way too old for her age. Everyone always leaves out the 'I' at the beginning of a sentence - that bothered me A LOT!!! Another thing I personally hate in my books, when people begin a sentence with 'I've something to tell you...' those I've's at the beginning sound sooo weird :/ (Is that a british thing too???)

That was my problem with the writing and now to the story.
I don't even know what to say.
The first 10% ... I was soooo in love with the story and I had high hopes for wherever this book would lead the reader, but.... It almost felt like I was reading a diary. I'm writing this now that I'm only 50% into the book and up until now it's like Mia and Cole just fast-forwarded through their lives. And so much got lost on the way. I would've been happier with hearing a few pages from their Childhood and then the author should've done a 10-year-later thing and not constantly those 6 months later - 1 year later - 2 years later - one week later, there was just way too much in this book. Either it should've been a 3-book thing or a much shorter one book thing. But the way it turned out is a bit weird. It's a bit like Ms. Fiore started with an amazing story idea in her head, but after writing 10% she got kind of lost in there somewhere :( I don't know how to explain it any better :/

BUT - I still loved Cole and Mia and Mia's Dad sooo much - I had to keep reading to find out how their story would end!!!

HIS LIGHT IN THE DARK was a really moving and adorable and exciting Romance about two amazing people who fought their way through so much pain to finally get their Happy Ever After . . . GO & GET IT & FALL IN LOVE WITH COLE TOO!!!

I've missed you all GR buddies..I have been very ill this past week..since Valentine's Day actually...;-(
During my bedridden week I tried really hard to get fully into this book. Now I will say that it had great potential; but one of my biggest pet peeves is when a couple who are meant to be together, end up spending most of the book fighting their attraction for one another. In this case it was the hero not feeling like he was good enough for the heroine...So, for most of this book (almost 80%) he fought his attraction to her...Frustrated me to no end....which is a shame because this could have been an epic read.

Cole and Mia basically meet when they are children. Cole has been severely abused by his father, and his neighbor; Mace ends up taking Cole under his wing and raising him and Mace's daughter Mia. Cole was 12 years old and Mia was 7 when this all takes place, and they both develop an unshakeable bond, that only grows through out the years. Unfortunately, Cole ends up having to go away from Mace and Mia for a few years and when he is back; he is no longer the same. He distances himself from the both of them; until one day he decides to search for that light that he once found in Mace and Mia....

This story has a lot of things going on...and I mean dark things. There is a mystery, and there is betrayal; but through it all Cole never ever forgets Mace as a father figure, nor Mia as someone he grows to love very deeply. He ends up protecting them, sometimes from a far...There is an evil developing in their town and lives become in danger...Mace and Mia are targeted for a few different reasons...There are many twist and turns...What will happen in the end, and who will be the last ones standing??

This really would be an awesome book, but my biggest complaint would be how slow it was. It just seemed like things dragged on and on. I think if the book had been cut in half, and Cole got off his butt and took Mia like he was meant to do..then it could have been an almost perfect book. There were times where I wanted to give up, I got so tired of the same theme...am I glad I finished..? I suppose; but by the end my frustration did overshadow my pleasure!!! The characters though, I did fall in love with...They were great characters...just a bit more speed would have made me like the book way more!!

L.A. Fiore is fast becoming one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE AUTHORS!!! Omg. Her writing takes you on a journey through her book. Her books make you laugh, cry, angry, broken-hearted, and in the end, grateful for her writing. Everytime. His Light in the Darkness left me with a MAJOR book hangover in the best possible way.

When we first meet Mia is seven and Cole is twelve. It is during these years that sets the foundation for the book and their growing relationship. Both of them only have their father's; their mother's abandoning them YEARS ago. But that is where their similarities end.

Cole's father is a nasty, abusive drunk. While Mia's father is everything a child could want in a father, man, and role model. Mace Donati. Mia's father. Ugh. LOVED THAT MAN!! The way he took in a broken Cole and showed him how a MAN treats a child (and people in general) made me want to give this man a Nobel Peace Prize. No joke. I thought his relationship with Cole was just as important and as big as a part as Cole and Mia's relationship.

While there are times where you literally want to slap the crap out of Cole, you (at least I did) fully understand his motives for keeping his distance from Mia. And poor Mia, she just didn't understand how and why Cole kept his distance when she KNEW he had feelings for her. But she doesn't want to give up on the damaged boy that stole her heart all those years ago.

There is no easy way to review this book (for me). You HAVE to read it to understand that this book is SO MUCH MORE than what the book description tells you. So. Much. MORE.

I don't usually write reviews or leave ratings for my books because I wrote them, so of course I love them. Saying that, there are always areas in my published books that, when reading again, I'd like to rework. But this book, it's as close as I'm going to get to my vision for this story. Mia is captured exactly how I hoped: sweet, idealistic and loyal. Cole is dark, brooding, at times, rude, but underneath is a very thoughtful and deep person. Mace is brilliant; the perfect combination of loving father and teacher. The story spans many years; you first meet Mia at seven and Cole at twelve and it's these early years that form the foundation for everything that happens later. My wish is for those who read it, the story pulls you in and makes you feel a part of it. I hope you laugh and cry and maybe resist the urge to toss your ereader across the room. Welcome to Mia and Cole's world. Happy reading! -- L.A.

I know. I know! I’m giving this 3*. But I liked it. I didn’t love it, but it was sure compelling reading where I couldn’t unstick this book from my hands!

It started off really strong. My stomach churned.

We have one lad who comes from an abusive home and all that impacts on that and him growing up.

Then we have Mia his friend who comes from a loving home.

What happens in this crossover is horrendous.

Some of the writing was a bit dodgy in areas and some a bit repetitive and lacking in the ability to hold my attention in parts.

Everyone loves a happy ending? Is that true? Or a realistic one?

I’ll leave you with that thought.

Cole met Mia when they were kids of twelve and seven when Mia’s dad saved him from the abuse and neglect of his own father and provided him with a safe haven to grow in. Through the years Cole and Mia formed a deep friendship that would affect both for the rest of their lives. However, one rash decision ripped them apart and led Cole onto a path where he sometimes had to embrace the darker parts of himself in order to survive. Believing that he was just like his father he didn’t want to bring that darkness to the only people who showed him any kind of love and care and forced himself to keep his distance. But one tragedy and a slew of nefarious intentions keeps them in their life.

I desperately wanted to like this book more than I did but I had some issues with the story. The biggest of them being Mia; who I found distractingly annoying at times. She was largely naïve to what was happening around her and even though the she was described as too curious for her own good on numerous occasions, she conveniently turned a blind eye when she could have easily found out about the darker plot under the surface. She was hopelessly obsessed with Cole even when he did everything in his power to keep her away. I just really needed for her to grow a backbone and stand up for herself whereas she often just had someone else stand up for her.

Although I loved the fact that Cole and Mia’s story spanned across almost their entire lives, I feel as though the book could have been that much more exciting if some of the information had been culled as at times it felt a bit long-winded and the story became boring around the midway point.

However, I found Cole to be a great character and I loved all the angst his self-loathing and stubbornness brought. His violent dark-side set off against his inability to completely let go of Mia was sexy as all get out and when his control snapped and the vulnerability peaked through, it made for some deliciously hot interactions. These two have always harboured feelings for each other but instead of becoming stale, the push and pull between them kept the romance fresh and exciting.

After I got past the midway point the story really picked up and I got lost in the excitement of the tension between Mia and Cole. The mystery and questions surrounding certain incidents kept me turning pages and even though some twists were predictable, I definitely did not see that ending coming.

I really loved the relationship between Mia and her father. The humour of their interactions was great and the connection and trust between them was refreshing.

This would have been a perfect read if it were just a bit shorter and Mia could have been a little stronger but all in all this book was interesting, exciting and sexy.

This is the year I decided to read some books outside of my usual genre comfort zone. When I saw His Light in the Dark on NetGalley I will admit I was umm...um...staring at the cover for a period of time, it did not sway me ordering the book to read at all *cough, splutter*. I liked the synopsis, thought it would have some dark edges to the romance so I dived right in.

This is not one of those soppy romance books where everything is perfect and all is well. Far from it. Cole Campbell (dude on the cover) lives with his alcoholic father who takes great pleasure in using Cole as his personal punching bag from a very young age. Cole is neglected and unloved and the only touch he gets is a fist or a kick.

Through a series of events the next door neighbour Mace Donati takes young Cole under his wing and into the home he shares with his daughter Mia. Mia and Cole quickly become young friends and for the first time in his life Cole feels safe and loved. Mia and Cole grow up together, become teenagers and well...one day Mia looks at him in a different way. In that way.

The plot then weaves through the adult lives of them both and takes a fair few twists and turns as we watch their lives unfold from the sidelines. Cole gets tangled up in things he should have stayed well away from and becomes essentially a "bad boy". Cue the sexiness factor going up a million notches in Mia's eyes, but she still remembers the sweet, kind boy that used to watch movies with her at home. Cole is damaged goods. Mia doesn't really care.

I found the book really enjoyable at the beginning and very much so in the last third of the book, but the middle dragged out a bit for me and I got a little bit bored if I am honest, but I persisted and was glad I did as things got really good from there. Expect some hot scenes, and one hell of an ending that I did not see coming in a million years. It was worth reading the book just for the ending.

This one gets a rating of 3.5 stars from me, it would of certainly been a 4 star read if not for the slight lull in the middle of the book. I would try other books from this author and as far as stepping out of my comfort zone goes? It was a good experience. Live on the edge right? Happy reading!

4.5 never be alone stars. The novel jumps between Cole and Mia's points of view which makes for an interesting story as you watch them grow up, deal with their awareness and attraction to each other and ultimately fall into one another. Mia is such a good balance to Cole and vice versa which really gets you to like them together. The writing takes you on their journey and keeps you interested.

"You're not alone, Mia. You've got your dad, Aunt Dee and Dylan."
"And you. Don't forget you."
"I'm not family."
"Sure you are. You're here more than Aunt Dee and she's my aunt. I like having you here; I like you, Cole."
His voice sounded funny when he said, "I like you, too, Mia."
"Good, now stop killing Ken. He doesn't like it."

Mia first becomes aware of Cole as attractive when she's 16. She knows he's older than her but that doesn't stop her from checking him out or from her body craving him. He's the star in her fantasies and she begins dating guys her own age in hopes of distracting herself. She realizes that's exactly what she's doing, too. As she gets older, her crush on Cole changes in nature to a deeper feeling, one she doesn't even want to label.

Cole becomes more than aware of 16 year old Mia but knows he has to keep his distance. For one, she's a minor. Second, he isn't worthy of her. When he makes the decision to walk away from Mia and her father, Mace, it hurts him quite a bit when Mia throws it back in his face. She's the light to his dark and when he can't take it any longer, he returns to work with Mace but keeps his distance from Mia.

"Does it bother you?"
"Your crude mouth? No."
"You sure?"
"Yeah, I like it."
He moved then, right against my side, his finger lift my face to his. He said nothing, but pressed his crude mouth to mine in the sweetest of kisses.

The two don't do distance well since Mia is a persistent one. She gets in Cole's face, she demands his attention and she needs his protection. When her father dies, Cole knows he can't let anything happen to her and he finally starts crumbling on his resolve to stay away from her. The two finally come together and not a moment too soon as betrayal comes barreling into their lives like a freight train.

It started with, 'I should stay away' to 'I shouldn't have stayed away'.
Yeah... yeah... he was scared that his darkness will snuff out her light. So he went ahead and ignored her over the years and whored around (whoa!!! real mature). She even catches him in the act!!! Yeah, they were not together but they did share an intimate moment and claims to have feelings for each other. And the h, being the ever faithful doormat, chased after the Zero.
I understand the H had a horrible childhood but Mace (h's dad) was there to help him. Yet, he still avoided the h even after getting Mace's blessing to be together, he avoided her even after Mace's death (stalking her is different). He claims to have done everything to keep her safe and not dim her "light". Btw, she later becomes his "home " (eye roll)! Oh, and he also tells her (with regret) that he should've been her first (wtf).
And then later he decides staying away from her is enough and it's time to get back together with her.
I hate when the h comes across as desperate!
P.S: I loved Mia's dad, Mace (no matter what)!!!

5***** Light stars in this dark story

What an emotional roller coaster that was for me...unbelievable, i loved it..it was so different
and unique. I fall in love with both characters and their dark story.

"There are monsters in your dark, maybe this will help keep those monsters away."

Cole all his life suffered physical maltreatment by his father. All his childhood is filled with pain and darkness, without a mother to take care him...he tries to survive by staying hidden as much as he can from his father sight. Then one day light comes in his life because Mia and her father (Mace) notice the abuse he is suffering and Mace tries everything in his power to free Cole from the "Monster father" by taking Cole in his house and treating him like a son.

All things are going great for a few years but darkness always finds a way to destroy every light exists...So for Cole life once again shows its bad side...

A truly remarkable story where the author writes about abuse and specifically about children who suffer from abusive parents and how these children express their pain and they turn out to be. Fortunately in this story the victim (Cole) has two people believe and never give up on him, in short words their showing him the good side of life and that there are many choices and opportunities for everyone.

Smiley face

Because it hasn't published yet, i can't say anything else but i'm sure if you give it a chance you
won't be disappointed the main and the second characters combined with the amazing story the author has created will keep you in anguish wanting for more and believe me, you won't realize when it's finished.

Holy smokes !!

"But it was his pretty blue eyes that looked the worst. There was no light in them. [...] they were dark , like he was lost and couldn't find his way. Being lost in the dark was my biggerst fear and Cole seemed to be living that nightmare."

Having an alcoholic as a father and being constantly abused, Cole's childhood wasn't by far innocent or filled with love. As the two of them move in a new neighbourhood , Cole meets his guardian angel, a tall scarry man brave enough to step between Cole and his abusive father.
Ever since then Cole becomes like a third member of the Donati family.

But then something happened and Cole ends up in jouvie. And from here Cole chances. A lot. When he gets out he no longer feels worthy of being part of Mace's family.

"And every time I took my fists to someone , a little piece of my soul died because I was becoming him. "

Mia grew up as daddy's princess , and even if she was just seven years old when Cole came into her home she felt something for him from the start. Grewing up she couldn't understand why Cole stopped being her friend and why he was avoiding her like plague

Slowly she tries to rebuild their relationship and even if the attraction between them was visible, Cole continued to keep his distance and keep an eye on her from the shadows.

"A man who's willing to change himself, to deny himself what he wants , all in the name of wanting what's best for the woman he loves , he's more than good enough."

But then Cole's.... unorthodox past comes and bites him in the ass. Mace is in trouble, Mia is at risk and Cole is the one who needs to protect her and find the truth about Mace's accident.

This story goes from romance to suspense / mystery.

Unfortunately this one didn't cut it for me. I really wanted to like this one because it started off so well for me until I hit the 20 percent mark. The story pulled me in and I enjoyed the characters. Down hill after that. Major dragging and I just didn't connect anymore.

**** Cole was dealt a shit card – awful childhood. He lives with an abusive father who moved them from one town to the next. Cole never had a chance to make friends and adapt. The last time Cole moved into a new town he met Mia, the sweet angel. Mia’s father took Cole in, protects him and treats him like family. So, for the first time, he felt normal and accepted.
Mia is loveable, endearing and an innocent daddy’s little girl. Cole is beautiful but damaged. Mia was sealed from all the bad and ugly that Cole is accustomed too. Mia and Cole became insta-friends. She adores him and always try to look out for him. The first half of the book was lighthearted - we get to watch them grow up together and became best of friends.

“You’re going to be okay, don’t give up. Promise me, you won’t give up.”
“I don’t want to go. I’m scared.”

They were happy for awhile until circumstances bought Cole back the dark life. Cole had to leave Mia – in his mind it’s best to protect her. Mia was broken hearted but she never gave up. She refused to let him just disappear. Mia knows deep down that Cole is worth fighting for. Mia and Cole were deeply connected with each other. The love they have for each other is not easily broken. Will Mia be his light in the darkness?

“I need you to understand that, Mia. I stayed away but that doesn’t mean I didn’t want you.”

The story is definitely an emotionally filled, a tear-jerker. At the beginning of the book you get a glimpse of Cole’s life and it just made me cry watching him suffer. Then the story was a little light-hearted with Mia and Cole happy time together. Subsequently the story turns dim with Cole slipping to his dark life – definitely heart-breaking watching Cole go through some hard times and eventually find his way back to Mia. This is a sexy romance with a lot of twists/turns and suspense. If you are in the mood for a dark, gritty, intense love story this is the book for you.
This is the first book I read of L.A. Fiore and it is not my last. I will be looking for her next installment.

Mia and Cole met as children when her father tried to save Cole from his abusive father. The story spanned about 2 decades showing how their relationship evolved. Mia was the good girl with the perfect life. Cole OTOH could never escape his demons. Despite their differences they were still drawn to each other.

I would have liked this better, but it started to drag in the middle. Cole and Mia’s dad got into some trouble, but they never let Mia know what was really going on. Someone betrayed Mia’s dad, and it set off a huge chain of events. No one knew who betrayed him, and Mia was desperate to figure it out. This part of the story was boring because it was fairly obvious who wronged Mia’s dad, and it took a long time for the characters to put it together. It would have been more suspenseful if the book had been shorter.

I wasn’t feeling any passion or chemistry between Mia and Cole until the last quarter of the book. They were close as kids despite the 5 year age difference. Then they were separated for several years. When they reconnected, Cole purposely kept his distance. No matter what happened, Mia tried to strengthen their relationship. Chapters from Cole’s POV gave insight to his reasons for this, but from Mia’s perspective I couldn’t figure out why she didn’t give up on him. He gave her the cold shoulder for over a decade. There were a few moments between them during that time, but they weren’t intense enough to really get the feeling they were meant to be. It was pathetic after a while for Mia to put herself out there over and over again while he barely gave her a response.

I'm not going to say anything specific about the ending because it would give away some major spoilers. It was too perfect and over the top. I didn't want a dismal, sad ending, but it would have been okay if certain things hadn't happened.

A little predictable

It was just okay for me. As the H got older, the storyline took on one of way too many others. That being guy pushes girl away b/c she's too good for him, blah, blah, blah & girl has to watch as guy is with other girls......But continues to pine for him until he decides they can be together. I'm tired of this overused story where the girl is the doormat.

His Light in the Dark is the story of Mia and Cole. It's a story that spans decades starting with their childhoods growing up next door to each other. Mia has a loving father, Cole is brutally abused by his father. One day Mia's father, Mace, intervenes and Cole has the chance to experience what supportive family life can be like, if only for a while. I don't want to rehash the entire story and spoil it, but to summarize there's a lot of drama, angst and heart break, including police investigations, betrayals, corruption, deaths and all along the slowly simmering romance between Mia and Cole.
I loved L.A. Fiore's Beautifully Damaged books, so I can't help but compare them with this latest release, and unfortunately, His Light in The Dark did not fully meet my expectations.
The story was simply too drawn out. I actually got bored just under halfway through. It had a fantastic premise to make a thrilling book, but it was just too slow for me. That's where it lost one star. And then the ending! We all love a HEA, but this went over the top big time. It needs to have a speck of realism at least, even if this is fiction. That's why it lost another star.
Nevertheless, I will continue reading books by this author because her other books had me truly gripped, but this just wasn't for me.

When I read the synopsis of His Light in the Dark, I had to read it. Childhood friends to lovers are some of my favorite reads.

Unfortunately, this book wasn't for me. I never really felt connected to the characters. I loved Mace, who was Mia's father, and his character. I even liked Cole and Mia. I just never really got drawn in. I love when a book pulls me in and that's all I can think about for days after I'm finished. This book just didn't meet my expectations.

I liked the book and the direction it was going, it just never really got there for me. I felt it could have been shortened some because it lost me for awhile. I caught myself skimming to get through. The first part of the book and the last part of the book I actually loved. It was the middle where I got distracted and started skimming.

I'm thinking maybe it was just me and my mindset at the time of reading this one. I would recommend the book. The author does a great job with her writing and the storyline was a good one. I just didn't connect with these characters like I wanted to. So that could be on me and not the author.

I give His Light in the Dark 3 Crazie Stars! ~Kim
