Nate has been in love with Quinn, his brother’s best friend, for as long as he can remember. But when he finally gets the chance to show Quinn how he feels, his heart gets broken in the most unexpected way.
Second chances come when you least expect them...
Quinn doesn’t believe in miracles, especially not Christmas ones. When he decides to win Nate back he knows it won’t be easy. The last thing he expects is a health scare, a road trip and a vicious snow storm to work in his favor.
In the end, a cabin in the woods turns out to be not only the shelter they desperately need, but also Quinn's very own Christmas miracle.
Sometimes, to forgive, you need to get snowed in...
Teodora Kostova writes romance where every heartbeat matters. She’s an award-winning, bestselling author, a linguist fluent in four languages, and a Creative Writing graduate with a weakness for broken characters who kiss slow and love loudly. When she’s not writing, she’s probably watching anime, trying to score tickets for a musical, or analysing a friend’s natal chart over strong coffee.
On the one hand: crush on your older brother's BFF, which has been done many times but never ceases to titillate me; secluded cabin in the middle of a snowstorm (romance CLASSIC!); and plenty of SEXY times.
BUT: the main premise of the story just didn't work.
Quinn sleeps with Nate, his best friend's younger brother, tells him he loves him, and then leaves in the middle of the night and doesn't call, text, or courier pigeon Nate for two years! TWO YEARS, people.
And the reason for this is rifuckingdunkulous (this is totally a word!) and in no way justifies Quinn's behavior. I'm not doing spoilers, but let's just say that the "reason" may have been valid for a few weeks or even MONTHS, but not two years.
Doing the "right" thing also doesn't mean you can't communicate with the man you love and then barge into his life two years later and expect forgiveness with nary an explanation.
Plus, the MCs felt wooden. I wanted more talking, less sulking and jealous fits.
The ending was a tentative HEA, and the writing was accessible, but the plot wasn't believable, and it completely soured me on the story.
Ugh. I think I am too big of a bitch to enjoy stories like this any more. I HATE Quinn (and Brandon, too). Everything about him set me off.
Nate had every right to be angry and I, for one, loved his attitude. I can hold a grudge like no other, so his attitude was spot on. Until it wasn't. He rolled over and showed his belly WAY too soon. Did he stick to ANY of his rules?
Fuck Quinn. He leaves for 2 years and stomps back into Nate's life and expects forgiveness? Bullshit. Go home, Quinn.
Brandon is a bastard too for even helping Quinn out. He knew what Quinn did to Nate and that's the kind of guy you want with your brother? Please.
Overall, I wished Nate would have stayed pissed off and followed his rules. I wish he would have made Quinn work harder and then dropped him like he did Nate 2 years prior. I wished that Nate would have left Quinn in the cabin. I wished that Nate would have said 'fuck you, I'm out' in Vegas. None of that happened though.
I cried. I cried so hard for Nate. I just want him to have better and Quinn definitely is not better.
I have really enjoyed this author's work in the past and the premise for this book was very good.
I also don't mind when the MCs break up and reunite after years. I actually like it.
But for the life of me, I can't understand or justify Quinn 's actions for staying away from Nate for so long. I would actually prefer that he freaked out and took off.
Just no. You don't screw him and leave for TWO FLIPPING YEARS with a lame ass reason (there was absolutely no reason he couldn't have texted or called Nathan). And don't get me started on his brother - what a jerk.
I'm a huge fan of Ms. Kostova's Mask and Dreaming of Snow so was very excited to read Snowed In. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work for me. There were certain actions of some of the characters that didn't make sense to me and I just couldn't get past them.
Overall this novella was a totally enjoyable read, with characters I pretty much liked. I did find two things that felt off to me that could have been done better. The first was Quinn's reason why he walked out on Nate and was gone for two years with no contact the entire time. Instead of explaining to Nate what was happening he made a decision for Nate, which meant he was treating him as if he was a child, not as a equal partner. I thought that while Quinn's reason for being gone was acceptable it was not acceptable that Nate never got to decide to be there in Chicago with him. Also, I thought that Nate should have stated that fact to Quinn rather than just demanding that there be no secrets in the future. The only other thing that was troubling for me was Quinn's reaction to Nate getting a lot of text messages when they got phone service back. Quinn's statement that Nate in the future would not be getting texts was Neanderthalish and outright disturbing. My first BF refused to allow me to have any gay male friends because of his out-of-control possessiveness... if Quinn doesn't learn to trust Nate their HEA will be more a happy till things fall apart.
I enjoyed Kiss and Ride so I wanted to try another title from Ms. Kostova. I settled with this one because the blurb said about brother's best friend and also a chance of reunion.
Unfortunately, this one was a BUST.
I was flabbergasted when Quinn told Nate the reason, and then I was pissed. Quinn's reason for leaving -- incommunicado for 2 years after he practically 'deflowered' his best friend's virgin younger brother and told Nate that he loved him -- WAS TOTAL LAME. I mean, seriously, what the f*ck kind of reason was that?!? I. Can't. Even. SERIOUSLY!!
And on that note, SHAME ON YOU TOO, Brandon! What kind of big brother are you??
Also, while Ms. Kostova's writing was easy to read, again I was having a bit difficulty separating Nate and Quinn's voices. A problem I noticed with Kiss and Ride as well. Maybe it's my own issue but I think I'll pause my intention to dig up her back-list titles.
No. Just ..... no. Nate has loved Quinn forever, Quinn loves Nate. They share a perfect night of hot sex, complete with matching "I love you's". The next morning, Quinn is gone, leaving a note saying last night was a mistake, I can't be with you, I hope you'll forgive me some day.
TWO YEARS LATER .... Quinn returns. He hasn't communicated with Nate - no emails, no calls. AND Quinn can't understand why Nate doesn't want to give him another chance. At around 66%, Nate and Quinn are stranded in a cabin ... because Snowed In. Finally, Quinn explains why he left, and yes, the reason is sad, and noble, but it doesn't explain why Quinn was gone for TWO years, with no contact. Nate admits that yes, his soul shrivled up and died and he hated that they lost two years, but what happened .... made him love Quinn MORE. Okay. Sure, why not.
lol, every trope possible - brother's best friend, friends to lovers, first time, 2nd chance (just off the top of my head).
Honestly the narrator, Dan Rider, totally made this one for me. He gives a wonderful performance: a different voice for each character, plus believable female voices which really work. Mr. Rider builds the story and makes the most of the numerous sexy-times throughout. 4 stars for him
an audiobook copy of Snowed In was provided to me for the purpose of my honest review
It was well written, almost perfectly edited. But the plot didn't do much for me. Quinn's reason for staying away could've been explained more. And there should've been more time in clearing up the distance between them. But well, that's just me...
There are so many tropes at work here for this holiday novella. There is friends to lovers, second chances, road trip, snowbound, and a holiday that brings this story together. I have read several of Kostova’s books and have enjoyed her style and tone in every one. This holds true here as we first meet Nate.
Nate is 20 years old, living with his parents, and working a basic job while his brother, Brandon, and his friend Quinn are at college. Quinn was a constant fixture in Nate’s house growing up and they had their own friendship, but Nate has always been in love with Quinn. When the story opens his excitement as well as his nervousness comes through at the thought of not only seeing Quinn again, but finally going after what he wants. When the guys all spend the weekend together, desires and feelings explode but then Quinn takes off without an explanation.
The job of a novella is to offer just enough information to keep the story together without then opening up threads of new information that don’t have time to be explored. It’s a balancing act between all of it. The relationship between the guys when they are together was a great read. There is lots of time of them being snowed in and what else is there to do but stay warm and make up for lost time and Kostova excelled with offering many heated and intense scenes.
- - Well, this was interesting...mmmm ! The last 25% was a super sex marathon with M/M delights and more sex. To begin, Nate has had the hots for his brother's friend, Quinn, since he was 15. Quinn, a few years older went away to college, came home, had sex with Nate, and left in the night, not communicating for 2 years !!! Oh, Hell no !! A few months I could have believed. Quinn seems like he has no personality, and Nate's brother sides with Quinn instead of his own brother's well being. Nate was cute but in constant turmoil. Nate's brother and girlfriend think Nate is lazy and naïve, but Nate seemed more grown up than the rest. The story was plausible but something was missing. No real back ground on how Quinn was the way he was, and Quinn seemed hollow. Did I mention the last 25% was great M/M sex? And Quinn putting himself in Nate's life, like nothing happened. I like to have really wonderful characters to cheer for. Give it a try and see what you think. Some people loved it !!
I have enjoyed most of what I read so far from this author. This book was the exception. The premise and the characters should work but for some reason it just didn't. Also the reasons behind actions that were taken in the book just didn't work for me. It was not believable and left me with an incredible urge to beat the s%@t out of Quinn. Meh, might work for some but didn't work for me at all.
How would you react after spending a night of passionate love making for the first time with someone you have loved unrequitedly like forever and then the following morning you wake up to find the person gone and a note on your pillow? Yes, pretty much the same way anyone would, I guess. Hurt, angry, confused, sick, used, indignant? I guess there aren’t enough adjectives to describe this feeling.
But this is exactly what Nate has to live through and to be very honest I felt for Nate in this story all the way. Quinn, Nate’s older brother’s best friend, who has been living with his family since he was taken in by Nate’s parents, has returned home for a weekend trip with Nate’s brother and girlfriend. They spend a weekend in a cabin together and during this time the one thing that Nate has always longed for happens. A dream come true! But when he wakes u to find Quinn gone then the hurt is understandable.
I just couldn't believe myself that Quinn would have done something like this and could totally feel for the hurt that he put Nate through. However, time heals and life moves on, or does it? Quinn returns two years later and wants to make amends and try and win Nate back. Well, to be very honest again I could totally understand Nate’s indignance. What a cheek! Quinn turns up out of the blue and expects to walk back into Nate’s life again? No wonder Nate was angry, who wouldn’t be! But can Quinn win Nate over? Is there such a thing as second chances? Does the love you have for someone ever totally die?
Quinn definitely has his work cut out! First he has to deal with Nate’s fury which is totally understandable but in order to do this he has to come clean and say to Nate exactly why he left in the middle of the night two years before but he has to wait until Nate has calmed down enough to hear him out. I must admit that I was also intrigued as to the reason why Quinn left Nate. Well, Nate’s older brother in my opinion has a lot to answer because he brings Quinn back under the pretence that they’ll all be driving back home together to their parents for Christmas. Then Nate’s brother has to fly back earlier than planned due to complications with the birth of his first child. This leaves Nate and Quinn alone on their road trip.
I liked very much how the tension starts to break down gradually as these two guys are thrown together and have no choice to but to acknowledge each other. Nate is emotional and a bit of a hot head whereas Quin is solid and level headed. It’s obvious these two belong together but the elephant in the room and the hurt needs to be cleared out of the way first. When they have no choice but to be holed up together in the cabin where they first made love due to a snow storm and not being to drive any further then there is no way out for either of them.
Yes, this book is about second chances, hurting and making up again. Why did Quinn leave without out a word in the first place? Well, to be honest when the truth came out I must admit that although Quin saw it necessary to take off without telling Nate anything for me personally it wouldn’t have been a reason at all. He still could have gone and told Nate why he had to go after all Nate is an adult. I found it rather insulting to be honest on Quinn’s behalf that he didn’t give Nate the credit of being able to make his own choices. Nate forgives him and everything gets back on an even keel, I don’t think I would have been so magnanimous as Nate to be honest not after two years when my life would have moved on so far then there would be no turning back. Don’t worry, for those who don’t like cheating the reason that Quinn left is nothing to do with cheating or having an affair, so you can all relax there.
It was heart warming to read how the buried flame that Nate holds for Quinn after all this time is rekindled and they both fall in love again. Showing us that when you have loved someone so intensely then that love never really dies. It’s an emotional journey about forgiveness, second chances and hopefully not making the same mistakes again. A wonderful idea that tugs at the heart strings even though in real life it would probably never happen for me at least, but who knows? It would be nice to think it does happen and once you have found your soul mate you should never let go. That is where Quinn for me was a complete idiot! I don’t think I would have been quite so forgiving as Nate and would have made Quinn definitely work a lot harder for sure. I can recommend this book to anyone who likes the whole idea about forgiveness and second chances. I just hope that Quinn now realises what he has and does nothing to mess it up again, ever!
Narration
Dan Rider is a new narrator for me and I was delighted that I could get used to his style immediately with no warming up phase so to speak. For me the sign of a good narrator is that the listener has all the characters sorted out, the story is clear without noticing the narration. This is also partly down to the author but the narrator also has to create that feeling that you have been listening to this story already.
If I was to make one small criticism at all it would be a general one I have with most narrations and that is sometimes the anger just doesn’t sound angry enough for me. I mean when Nate is confronted with Quinn for first time I would have been livid! But sometimes this rage for me needs to be taken up a notch in the narration in order to give the anger credibility. Now maybe due to acoustics, etc. it might not be possible to start shouting but I just need to hear a little bit more anger / venom in a voice when the character is so angry. SO yes, putting things up a decibel or two in such cases for me would go a long way. There I have to find a narrator yet that will convince me of the anger in a character when listening.
Dan has done a wonderful job. What I will commend especially with Dan is that his female voice characterisations are the best I’ve heard to date! It’s always very difficult for a male narrator to characterise female characters and no doubt vice-versa. But Dan’s voice for Nate’s older brother’s girlfriend, Lisa, was spot on! It was suitably feminine with a higher register but never once sounded forced or unnatural, to be honest without the information about the narrator before if you only listened to the narration and dialogue of Lisa you would think it was a woman narrating. So I take my hat off to Dan on this one. Well done!
"Intense, passionate and intriguing." What made the experience of listening to Snowed In the most enjoyable? To have these two characters brought to life by the narrator.
What did you like best about this story? There was a lot of content in so few pages and I was drawn into the story from the start.
Which character – as performed by Dan Rider – was your favorite? Nate! My heart broke for young Nate, to have the one thing he has always dreamed of, then to have it snatched away while he lay dreaming.
If you could rename Snowed In, what would you call it? Snowed In seems to fit just fine, and it's the title the Author gave the story, why mess with it?
Any additional comments? Tams e-book review December 2015
At just fifteen years old, Nate not only knew he was gay, he knew exactly who he wanted… his brother’s best friend Quinn. Several years later on an annual Holiday trip to their family cabin, Nate finally gets what he has wanted for so long. But he is left stunned, confused and broken hearted when he wakes up the next morning to find Quinn gone.
Two years later Quinn is back to beg for forgiveness and to finally explain to Nate why he snuck out of the bed they’d just shared, like a thief in the night. Quinn is back to lay claim to Nate, but what he finds is not the energetic, full of life young man that Quinn fell in love with. Nate is pissed off, defiant and wants nothing to do with Quinn. Will an unplanned trip to the cabin and a couple of days alone be the answer to Quinn’s prayers?
Short, Sexy and… wait for it… Steamy! Kostova has delivered yet another fantastic Holiday story full of meat for us to sink our teeth into. (pun intended) Seriously, there was a lot of content in so few pages and I was drawn into the story from the start. My heart broke for young Nate, to have the one thing he has always dreamed of, then to have it snatched away while he lay dreaming. It really hits Nate hard and just by the dialogue in the story between Quinn and Bran, Nates brother, you know how hard the years have been on both men. I knew though, I just knew there had to be a reason. I’ll say no more, you’ll have to read for yourself.
Definitely the perfect little short story for this time of year; Snowed In is intense, passionate and intriguing. I devoured it in a little over an hour, just could not put it down once I started.
I was never able to make a connection with this story. Neither the characters nor plot were my kind of thing. It’s a quick read with plenty of sexy times so check it out for yourself.
The Story: This is the first book I've read/listened to by this author, and now I find myself wanting her entire backlist ASAP. I loved the characters and story here in Snowed In, and I've already listened to the audiobook twice! It's a fantastic friends-to-more, brother's best friend, second chance romance that should be in every M/M romance fan's library.
Poor, sweet Nate. I fell in love with him from the start-it really was kind of hard not too. His character is so innocent and likable, and I was so mad at Quinn for how he treated Nate after the first time they were together. Even later on when we find out why, I still wasn't really ready to forgive him...but then again, I'm not Nate. Quinn tries to stop things between them the first time around, but gives in and instead winds up hurting Nate terribly.
When the two see each other again several years later, I was totally supporting of Nate and his attitude toward Quinn...but I was also still holding out hope for them as they were really wonderful together that first time. I wanted to see Quinn redeemed, and see them both finally get what they really want. It's a rocky road to get there, and in the end we get to find out exactly what happened to make Quinn leave the first time. I did not agree with him at all about not telling Nate what was going on, and I was also a little peeved at Nate's brother Brandon...at every step I was firmly on Nate's side (can you tell he was my favorite character?).
In the end, I was very happy with how everything turned out, and Snowed In wound up being a 4.5-star read for me. M/M romance fans will love this story; it is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and M/M sexual content (which oh-by-the-way is so very hot!).
The Narration: I really liked Dan Rider's narration. I thought he voiced the characters quite well, giving each their own distinct voice and keeping them consistent throughout the story. He did an amazing job with Nate and his emotions, and I was totally pulled in to the story through his voice. I look forward to listening to more of his work in the future...5 stars for the narration!
Teodora Kostova is a new-to-me author, and I really liked the writing style. However, I did have some issues with the characters, which I hope I can explain without spoiling the book. I adore holiday stories and second chance stories, too, so this one really could have been the icing on the cake for me.
I adored Nate and was really hoping the heartbreak mentioned wasn’t too terrible. In spite of, or maybe because of, his age, I really felt for him when things didn’t go quite the way he planned. I actually kinda hated Quinn there for a bit, and hoped he had a good excuse for what happened with Nate.
However, it was not to be. And I really began to dislike Brandon, Nate’s brother, for a bit there, too. I was a bit disappointed with Quinn’s reasoning, and was behind Nate’s anger entirely when Quinn comes prancing back into Nate’s life. I had hoped Nate would make Quinn work on redeeming himself more, but he caved entirely too early for my tastes. Perhaps I am a bit vindictive, but Quinn deserved whatever Nate chose to dish out to him, and then some.
Since this is a holiday tale, though, the happily-ever-after was given with some detriment to the storyline, in my opinion. However, I will seek out more of this author’s work at a later date.
