8 books42 followersBorn in the UK in 1981, I have spent the past 12 years living and teaching in Spain, New Zealand and The Republic of Georgia. I have two beautiful young daughters and work as an English Language Specialist and as Copy-Editor for several cultural and business journals in Tbilisi. Blood Omen is a project I've been working on quite happily for some time and it gives me such a thrill to see it finally on the global 'shelf' for others to read!
What started me writing Blood Omen, the five book vampire saga?
A dream. I know- it's happened to other writers too... I woke up one day, late January 2005, with a really clear image in my head: I saw myself sitting up in bed in my childhood room. It was night and the window was open. I could see the silhouette of a male vampire sitting at the window- one foot resting on the sill and an elbow resting casually on his knee; watching me in silence (if we had a conversation in that dream, it was lost when I woke up). But that image of him sitting there- powerful, dark, mysterious; dangerous and attractive- was irresistible and just begged to be written about! I decided his name was Elias. And so the first character in my Blood Omen saga was born. And from that point on, my story began to weave itself.
I've been writing and thinking up stories since I was very young, and I started writing vampire fiction when I was fourteen- though I never thought to make any real effort to get anything published. I once tried to describe to a friend what it was like to create a story from nothing: I said that, in my case and with Blood Omen in particular, I felt like the story was already complete in my head, but that there was a wall between me and it, and every day that I sat down at the computer and started to type, a little bit of that wall got chipped away and more and more details of the story and characters got revealed. It is a strange but very exciting process!
I hope all my friends, family and readers will get the same level of enjoyment from reading my books as I did in creating them!

I must state from the start that this is not a stand-alone book. It is not really Book 1 of a series. It is Episode 1 of a serial. So don’t be surprised and disappointed, as I was, when you turn a page in the middle of the action, and there isn’t any more. The writer, of course, wants you do be disappointed, and immediately go out and buy Book 2. I suppose that’s well and good, but at least now you’ve been warned.
This is a pretty standard vampire book, where the main character, Dea, seems to have attracted the attention of a coven of vampires. All her life she has been able to see vampires, while the rest of humanity can’t distinguish the predators in their midst. Then there’s her best friend Ana, a typical teenager, a Goth who is enamoured with the idea of vampires, and keeps going on about them in the normal inane teenage way. Meanwhile Dea is battling them for real, and trying to protect Ana at the same time. This contrasting view of the same situation is a great writing technique, and Ana is my favourite character in the book.
The other strength in the story is Ms. Davies’ portrayal of the emotions Dea goes through, with her bereavement for her mother, her divided feelings for vampires in general and a few of them in specific, and her terror at the situation she is forced into.
Unfortunately, these strengths do not completely carry the story. The plotline is episodic, with the same pattern happening several times. You’d think the ‘good guy’ vampires would figure out that every time Dea goes into the outside world, the bad guys catch them. But they keep doing it anyway. Their refusal to tell her what’s really going on is great for suspense, but the excuse that she “isn’t ready to hear it yet,” needs to be developed more seriously to be credible.
The characterization also has problems. It seems that every male vampire is pale, beautiful, and wears black jeans. They all rather blur, even the important ones. The female vampires have more individuality.
As well, there is a rather disorienting timeline switch and a lot of general writing errors that a good line edit would have fixed.
In all, a decent story, but uneven in execution. Recommended for the less fussy paranormal reader.

პირველად 7 წლის წინ წავიკითხე ვამპირული ომები and it is very nostalgic for me and ბევრ კარგ რამესთან ასოცირდება so I love it in that regard. მაშინ მახსოვს რო გადავირიე ისე მომეწონა but this book lack so many things. Rough translation of the above: "There are so many books, movies and TV series on vampires. It maes us want vampires to exist in real life. Most who know vampires want to try that life on for size and long for what they see on the screen to be real. I'm one of them. And this book, Blood Omen, made me feel that way- I lived in the pages with Dea, experiencing it all alongside her- from her mother's death to falling in love with Santi- I was there, living it all. I was lucky that when I started reading the first part, as all the 5 had been translated and released- so I got to enjoy the whole set within days. I was surprised at the fine details and how much I enojyed it. Thank you very much for this unparalleled book, thank you so much and thank you for setting your books in an unrealistic but incomparable world that I got to live in, dreamlike, for a while..." 🤩😍

I really love a good YA Fantasy novel that takes a reader in and makes the magic realistic, but equally takes you on a journey through the emotions of the main characters. Davies doesn't disappoint with the deep emotional insight she provides for the main character, a young teen named Dea facing a difficult time in her life. I loved the friendship that the book starts with between her and her best friend Ana, and the way the story pulls you in makes you feel like you're actually in the room with them sharing their experiences. There are many vampire books out there, but this one has a refreshing angle that I really enjoyed. Davies gives the reader rich details that help in understanding the "whys and "whats" of the dark side of the lore, and that makes it all the more enticing to read. There's a balance between action, suspense, and romance that I found very entertaining. Let me also say that Santi is amazing and the romantic aspect keeps you turning the pages. The ending takes you to the suspenseful edge of the next book and I'm definitely interested in finding out what happens next!

Suspenseful vampire thriller
The story opens with one of the scariest chapters since Stephen King. Dea, the protagonist, is swept up in a midnight kidnapping by "good" vampires who are protecting her from bad ones. Over the next few weeks Dea works to uncover the mystery of her own past--and the dangers of her fate. The book ends with a cliffhanger that requires you to read volume 2, which I don't care for,but it's a well-written story by a talented writer.

this book series is very underrated . first one is kind of slow and mainly focuses on Dea just figuring stuff out . first time i thought that it was very boring and it was just another basic vampire story but the cliffhanger had me pick up another book and i was not disappointed with my decision to continue.

I never was into vampires and stuff, but this book totally changed the thought about it, its not about only vampires, its about love and loyalty.

As the “1” in the title suggests, this is not a stand alone book but the first in a series (of five books).
Our protagonist is 17 year old Dea, we are thrown immediately into the action… “Run. Run. Run.” Dea’s mother is killed and Dea is kidnapped by a group of vampires. Dea has a strange ability to see vampires, where most humans can’t.
Recognising vampires doesn’t stop her being scared, “Goosebumps raced up my arms and chased shivers down my spine.”
My own reading of vampire fiction has been scant, I read and enjoyed Bram Stoker’s classic “Dracula” and “Interview with a Vampire” by Anne Rice. I have not read the Twilight books, and there are times I worry that this will stray into the Twilight territory with gushing description of gorgeous vampires with beautiful eyes and their unearthly beauty (“hey, they were all pretty sexy“). But there is plenty of action to recapture my interest. A breathless car chase ensues after Dea is kidnapped by the good vampires as they flee from the Apophi (the really bad vampires). The pace then slows as Dea is holed up at their coven in the woods.
At the cottage, Dea is held captive supposedly for her own good, and finds there is a lot she has to learn about vampires, but they tantalisingly won’t tell her, a recurrent theme throughout the book. They have their language Strix, presumably from the striges, bloodthirsty birds of Ancient Greek mythology, the language looks a little like Romanian. Then there is the difference between the born vampires (Llamia) and the humans turned vampire (Aluka) and human blood slaves (Abdun’i).
Dea falls for one of her captors (Stockholm Syndrome?), the vampire Santi, like a love-sick teenager (“my heart somersaulted in my chest. The way he was looking at me… God I wanted him.“) and makes the mistake once of tasting his blood.
The vampires, as you might expect need blood to survive, and human blood is the best. The good vampires try to justify this by mostly choosing victims who are monsters themselves, murderers, child molesters and their ilk. You can imagine if vampires say they are going for a drink in town it might be more sinister than if a human said it. Why don’t they drink from Dea? There are hints throughout the book of a prophecy of which Dea is a key component, but to find out more you will need to read the following books in the series.
This novel is a welcome addition to the vampire genre, mixing action, romance, psychology and some intriguing details about vampires.

From a casual glance they look the same as us but I, unlike most people recognise that they are as different from humans as cats are from mice. They carry a different, colder, darker aura.

Vampire blood doesn’t taste like human blood: it’s thicker; darker; headier.

Have you had your fill of vampires yet? Probably not, if you're like me. There is something about the dark edginess which draws me in to the tale time and time again.
With this series, there is plenty of that, but I should warn you that this is a hugely frustrating book, not least because it is the first in the series, so of course, there is the obligatory cliffhanger.
But more than that, it is the lack of answers and Dea's behaviour that had me grumbling at my kindle at points.
This is, without doubt, an intriguing start to the series, with a tantalising hint of relationship potential. I look forward to reading book 2.
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Blood Omen:The Vampire Wars by Katie Ruth Davies is an excellent book for teenagers. The book tells us about 17 year old girl named Dea. She has an unusual talent. All her life she's been able to see vampires, while the rest of humanity can't distinguish the predators in their midst. I haven't come across a book that dives into the different kinds of vampires like Blood Omen does. The book is full of unexpected things. Katie R. Davies uses different ways to describe Dea's feelings and it helps you to feel like you're going though this with Dea and her friends.

I definitely like the book. I like the idea of such evil creatures as vampires fighting for humans' future and their survival. Thus I like Ko-eks community and especially Elijah's coven. This is wonderful start of an adventure into the twisted world of "kind" and "evil" vampires for all vampire lovers. Still there are some issues, concerning past events that one couldn't simply understand and you only hope author will tell you lately.
I only gave the book 4 stars because I rarely apprise books with 5, a girl should have something left for greatest stories ever ))

I liked this book. I don't know why but I really enjoyed reading it. But main protagonist Dea is relly weak and little bit dumb. But in conclusion it was really good to read, there was action a little bit romance and those kind of stuff so I give it 3.5 because it had some issues.
