Having lived in France for a time many years ago, I have long been a big fan of French and Belgian comic books. I was not, however, familiar with The Bluecoats (Les Tuniques Bleues) until a young Frenchman recommended the series to my son. I purchased this one in English so I could easily read it to my grandchildren and it did not disappoint. It is about a pair of soldiers in the U.S. Army (the Union Army) during the U.S. Civil War. One is a very serious and loyal sergeant, while the other is a goofy private who has no interest in taking any risks in support of the Union Army. This book is funny and fun!
I asked myself why a French writer of comics would take an interest in this subject and make it the setting for his series. Of course, I do not know, but I am willing to venture a guess. My guess is that he read something about the well-documented ineptitude of the Union generals and thought that the Civil War would make a unique and enjoyable backdrop for his characters. And it seems to have worked!

This story is based somewhat loosely on fact. The Union did try to use balloons to carry a soldier or two up high enough to spy on the enemy. The advantage was that up high you could see things a good distance away.

On the other hand you had to have a balloon handy, guys who knew high to use it and guys who had that plus a desire to actually ascend in the balloon.

In this case the two continuing characters in the series get their chance to do their duty from on high! As expected, of course, nothing does exactly to plan as they find out, for example, that the Rebel army can use cannons to try to destroy the balloon and those in it.

Another funny addition to the series.

As a history buff as well as a lover of graphic novels, I resisted this series for a while, but finally had to take a look. It's sort of like a French version of F Troop, but set a few years earlier. The humor is on the weird side, more sophisticated than I might have expected. In the same vein as Asterix, humor alternates between slapstick and more elaborate gags.
Perhaps not so oddly, the French artist didn't really have a perfect knowledge of the American Civil War, and made one or two errors, but overall it had the feel of a wartime comedy, as if McHale's Navy had been set a few wars earlier.
Older kids and teens will appreciate the slapstick humor, and adults will probably get the wartime and soldier jokes. It's still not great, but probably worth reading if you like European graphic albums of a humorous sort.
