Speak Easy #1-2

The Speak Easy Duet: Speak Easy / Speak Low

Rate this book
It starts with Speak Easy... Enzo DiFiore is not a nice guy. He's a liar. A cheat. A criminal. His family kidnapped my father and wants ten grand in ransom from me-next week. But I can't keep my hands off him. Joey Lupo is a criminal too-and just because he's helping me get the money doesn't mean I should forgive him for all the dirty tricks he played on me in the past. But I can't keep my mind off him. Me? I'm just a bootlegger with a weakness for whiskey, danger, and a man in a three-piece suit. But deciding whom to trust isn't easy in a world where everyone wants something-be it booze, money, power, or sex-and no one cares what it takes to get it. It continues with Speak Low... I thought I could leave danger behind. I couldn't. I thought I did the right thing, betraying one man for another. I didn't. I thought I knew what I wanted. I was wrong. Now I'm desperate to fix my mistakes before it's too late and I lose the one thing, the one person, that truly matters to me.

Surprisingly one of my favorite reads by Melanie Harlow

I wasn’t sure how I would like the throwback to the 20s. Especially when I just got off reading the next generation from Cloverleigh Farms (yeah…apparently I read a little out of order). But let me tell you…her Speak Easy Duet isn’t talked about enough. I have absolutely loved everything Melanie Harlow has written. She can take me to France, Cloverleigh Farms, Abelard Farms, Bellamy Creek, any apparently a speakeasy with mafia ties in Michigan.
At first, I thought Tiny (Frances) was a bit of a doormat. But when push came to shove, this girl grew a backbone of steel. The way she stepped up to help her dad & support her family at all costs was commendable. She faced down danger at every turn & rolled with the punches like bootlegging & negotiating with mobsters was her birthright. I loved the easiness she and Joey had from the beginning. Even though they were sort of childhood enemies, you could tell there was something deeper. I loved the way she trusted Joey—even though she questioned herself—& the way he jumped in to help & support her when she needed it most.
I will say, with her taste of freedom, I had so many moment where I thought she was too stupid to live, but she had me fooled, haha. The way she semi trusted Enzo infuriated me at times. But man…was their desire fiery! Through their entire tryst, my heart broke a little. I just didn’t feel like that’s where she belonged.
When Tiny finally realized when Bridget was talking about when it came to matters of the heart, I rejoiced in her steadfastness to stick to the plan & seek her happily ever after. It took a lot of changes & a lot of moving of major players, but the happily ever after she found was so meant to be.
This duet ended up being one of my favorite reads by Melanie Harlow. There was spice, there was danger, there was plot twists on every corner & it kept me coming back for more.

Set in a lush 1920s background, with the mafia, parties and spicy scenes. Slightly slow pacing but so worth it. These 2 book in one create a action packed love story with a small love triangle that gets resolved at the beginning of book 2. I did find the MC Tiny a little annoying with her lust obsession, but to be fair Joey and Enzo and 🔥(I'm team Joey!). Has all our favourite romance tropes and overall such a good duology!!

That was fantastic!

The Speak Easy Duet at first look isn’t a typical book that I would read. It’s historical (takes place in 1923), there is a love triangle, and has more action/danger than I typically read. But I love Melanie Harlow and in an effort to read all her books, I picked this one up. I trust her to take of me as a reader. This book is so good!! I could see this as a tv show/series. It has so much more than just the romance story going on.

It doesn’t feel historical. It feels like a love story, just one that happens to have bootleggers and rival family gangs and underground dance clubs. I think because the 1920’s is familiar in pop culture, this doesn’t seem like a historical novel. Also, the main characters are driven by feelings and passion, they don’t hold back just because they shouldn’t behave that way in 1923. This is as passionate as any of Melanie’s contemporary romances, maybe even more so.

If you have read any of her other work you will know that there are some family members a few generations later as the main characters. They do reference the past, ie, Tiny, Enzo, and Joey. This made it so fun because in a way I knew the outcome, I just didn’t know how we were going to get there.

If you like a feisty heroine, a talk dark handsome dangerous man, and a good looking long time frenemy who can cook, you will love this book. If you like escaping into a story, being taken to another place, you’ll love this book. I’m so glad I read it!

Speak Easy
Speak Easy has promise, but just didn't hit the mark with me. I don't have anything against historical romances, but this 20's era story just didn't keep my attention. I liked Tiny for the most part, but didn't realize a love triangle was unfolding, and couldn't really root for her current choice between her childhood frenemy, Joey, and the dangerous mob guy, Enzo. The limited steamy scenes were okay, but hard to fully enjoy when it wasn't with my pick of heroes for her. I'm still invested and going to finish this duet, hopefully getting to see more of my preferred couple. Told only in Tiny's POV and ending in somewhat of a cliffy, the first half of her story gets a 3.5 from me.

Speak Low
Speak Low picks up right where Speak Easy left off, and doesn't waste much time rehashing the events that unfolded in book one. I really flew through this book just to get more of this couple. Tiny finally realizes her true feelings and fights for her true love, which made the second half of this duet much more enjoyable for me. Still only told in her POV, I give this one a solid 4 stars complete with yummy steamy scenes and HEA.

*Spoiler alert*
I didn't realize this book would feature family of Nick from Forked, so when I realized who she would end up with, I couldn't get on board with the love triangle aspect of Tiny's story. If I had read this series prior to Forked, I might have felt differently.

Ooo boy. This pains me to say, but I did not like this book at all. I'm in the minority, I know, but I just wasn't a fan of this novel. Previously I've enjoyed some very well-written and touching books by Melanie Harlow. Not to say, that this book wasn't well-written, it just was missing some of the things that I found in her other novels.

Other people found this book compelling and interesting and full of feels. While I enjoyed the era and the nuances that Harlow put into this book to make you feel in the middle of bootleggin' in the roaring 20's, I didn't find it the least big compelling. In fact, I loathed the female heroine Tiny. Ugh. She got on my nerves so much that my palm itched because I felt like smacking her upside the head on several occasions. I didn't really feel she had a connection with either male lead. And that whole f'ed up triangle didn't make any sense to me. First she's with the bad boy and then all of a sudden realizes she has feelings for the slightly less bad boy? I'm not buying it.

Eh.

Melanie Harlow has written some of my favorite books, but this one fell way, way short in my opinion. I look forward to reading some of her other novels in hopes to find a connection with the story and characters. But, I'll pass on any re-read with this one.

Speak Easy Duet by Melanie Harlow takes the reader back to 1923 when prohibition was in order. This story is about the O'Mara family who lived in the Midwest: Jack and his four daughters, Bridget, a widower with three small sons, Frances Kathleen, Molly, and Mary Grace. Jack is a mechanic by trade but needed extra money after his wife passed from childbirth of their last daughter, Mary Grace. He traveled to Canada and sold whisky to friends, relatives, and small business owners. However, Angel DiFiore and Leo Scarfone wanted in on the action; they sent word that Jack needed their protection, and it would cost him to ride the river to the Canadian side to pick up his goods. Jack neglected the warning and placed his daughter, Frances-Tiny, in danger, where she needed to get $10,000 for ransom. Enzo and his brother Raymond DiFiore fought over who would gain their father's attention by bringing in more money, drugs, and alcohol. Would the homeboy, Joey Lupo, win Tiny's affection, or would Enzo or Raymond win?

Mesmerizing and Addictive

Melanie Harlow has the ability to completely submerse you in her stories. Her characters take root and live in you mind. I have already read the Frenched Series, but I’ll go back now to re-read the second book. Though I know the connection, I want to feel it again. It’ll be the 3rd time I’ve re-read one of her stories because Melanie makes it hard to leave her world. The way that she weaves her characters through the books in incredible.

Bravo! This was a delightful, frightening, and, of course, sexy story.

On a side note, she might even make you look into history. I had no idea how long ago condiment were invented. A quick search and what I found was wild. We’re talking centuries ago. And some used animal horns. 😳

Speak Easy

I thoroughly enjoyed this story that takes place during the Prohibition era. There is action, suspense, and romance. Tiny will do whatever it takes to keep her family safe. Even if that means getting into bed with the enemy…figuratively and literally. I can’t wait to see what twists are in store and how the story ends.

Speak Low

Speak Low picks up right where Speak Easy ended. This book was filled with action, suspense, and romance. I wasn’t quite sure what direction the story was going to take. Tiny was struggling with her feelings for two men. Once she finally realized who she wanted, the story had my racing wondering what was going to happen. The story wrapped up nicely and everyone got what they deserved.

I'm not usually a historical romance person (or a Mafia/Mobster romance reader) but I love Melanie Harlow and the blurb sucked me in. Plus - the roaring 20's during Prohibition? Sign me up for a read.

The Speak Easy Duet has a kickass, brave heroine that is trying to save her dad and is struggling to choose between 2 guys. There's a whole lot of steamy scenes, history, and a story that draws you in and keeps you reading.

I don't want to give anything away but I love the end and Tiny's HEA! For this love triangle, the hero I was rooting for won her heart.

Great book!

I LOVED THIS BOOK. I’ve now read every Melanie Harlow book and this is my favorite. The type of book I want to read slowly so it doesn’t end but also can’t wait to finish because it’s so good. The story was so good and so different than anything I’ve read. I love that it was set in 1923. I loved all of the characters and I loved how it ended. I only wish I’d read this after I read Forked and Call me crazy, because those gave away the ending. But how fun to have two MH books that jump that far into the future and we see their great grandchildren!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Awesome!

These two books were solid. So much going on. Sometimes I had to take a break from reading just to absorb everything happening. Then I would have to dive right back in and read because it was so good so unpredictable so consuming. Really enjoyed this duet kept me up till 2:30 in the morning. It's been a long time that something kept me up. Awesome writing buy this duet you won't be disappointed.

Historical romantic suspense

This duet is set in 1923, the Prohibition era and follows a strong young woman in her fight to save her family and find her independence. Her search for love takes some twists and turns, but she wisely realizes which path would put her first. Great story.

disappointing

I wanted to love this. It had all the elements I like - historical, feisty heroine, and a little danger. But I just wasn’t connected. I didn’t find it engaging and reading became a chore.

Absolutely loved this set. Getting a look at some of the history/stories of some of my favorite characters ancestors. Melanie describes things so vividly that it feels like watching a movie. I was able to connect with those characters on a much deeper level.

There’s something magical and alluring about this 1920’s romance. I love how this romance ties neatly into Harlow’s other series. I’d love to see Harlow do another 1920’s romance novel.

I have no idea what I thought I was gonna get with this book. I had read all other Melanie Harlow books, so I knew who our heroine married.
So, imagine my surprise when she meets Enzo DiFiore! I didn't see that guy coming at all. Which means this whole story is a twist and a turn and a crazy ride you won't want to quit.

A bit historical, a bit sexy, and a whole lot of fantastic, Melanie Harlow brings you to an era where bootlegging was a way of life and being in the mob was acceptable.

You'll find yourself falling in love, falling in lust, and rooting for these characters--all of them. Be ready for a ride because The Speak Easy Duet will not take you where you think it will. It'll deviate, it'll drop, it'll jump, and it'll leave you a bit breathless.

SPEAK EASY
The best combination of drama, romance, and suspense!

Tiny O'Mara is one of the bravest heroines I have ever seen in an NA story. She's only twenty years old and she's prepared to put herself in life or death situations in order to help those she loves.

As far as the romance portion of this book goes, let's just say, I envy Tiny but am also sort of happy I don't have to deal with her guy dilemma.
Joey or Enzo???? Hot, long-time friend or Hot, mysterious stranger??? Can't she just have both?
I of course started out on Team Enzo. They had instant carnal attraction and he had that whole bad boy thing going on. But I actually switched over to Team Joey early on. Plus, Joey isn't necessarily squeaky clean either.

Writing a story like this, in a different era for this particular audience, will either be a hit or miss. Melanie Harlow hit this one spot on! She managed to transport me back in time and never once did I think about anything else other than Tiny's world. Harlow was able to make a simple girl from the 20s relevant and relatable.

Speak Easy is a debut novel that you don't want to miss out on. Harlow's writing was flawless and she did an excellent job of keeping the story interesting throughout. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book in the series!

SPEAK LOW
Tiny O'Mara was successful in saving her father and herself from the DiFiore family.
Unfortunately, the dust hasn't quite settled for her just yet. Her father is still mixed up with the DiFiore family after coming to an agreement. Joey is in a predicament after stealing Enzo's drugs. And oh yeah, Tiny's now very confused after a mind-blowing kiss from Joey.

At twenty-years old and after everything she's been through, Tiny's ready to build her own life away from her family. She's ready to be independent and live on her own. That, she's absolutely sure of.
How she's going to do it? No clue.
The most demanding dilemma she has is deciding if she wants to continue being Enzo's lover or explore her new-found feelings for Joey.

There wasn't as much action in Speak Low as there was in book 1, Speak Easy. But wait a minute! That doesn't mean it didn't.. satisfy.. in other areas. ;)
Melanie Harlow really outdid herself with the sexy time scenes in this book. But I'm sure it was quite easy seeing as how much of a connection and chemistry the two characters involved have.

If you thought Speak Easy was filled with hot scenes, you're in for a yummy treat in Speak Low.

Enzo is not a main focus in this novel like he was in the first book. I know there are a lot of ladies who love him. I'm not saying he wasn't hot, but I was Team Joey from the start so automatically I turn my cheek at his presence. He's just not a good person. I don't care how mysterious and sexy and powerful and…. what was I saying?

Joey Lupo!!! Now we're talking!
My love. My sinful gangster. My knight in shining armor. Oh wait, I'm supposed to be writing a review not exposing my Joey fantasies..
We experience a lot more Joey. There are moments where we're shown his vulnerability, and I loved getting to know more about him. He opens up a little more, and we also get to see his family in all their Italian glory.

The chemistry between Joey and Tiny was out of this world. In Speak Easy, we see them interact a lot and get a sense of their relationship. But in Speak Low, it's on a whole other level. Even when they argued, their banter was entertaining.

Tiny continues to show her bravery and strength, and stubbornness at times throughout this novel. There's a fine line between bravery and stupidity, and Tiny does well of not getting too close to the latter.
She is such a powerful little thing that she clearly stands out as one of my favorite book heroines.

This is a book I will constantly recommend to people. It's effortlessly written to capture the reader and make them forget that the book their reading isn't real life. I've always shied away from historical romance novels, because they sort of make me feel uncomfortable with their high-quality cheese factor. Mostly, for me they can seem overly dramatic, thus not allowing me to connect. With Speak Low, there are so many relatable aspects that connecting with the characters is so easy.

Finally! A historical romance that actually kept me wanting more. The Speak Easy Duet consists of Speak Easy and Speak Low packaged together as a complete series.

Melanie Harlow's NA take on the Roaring 20's has breathed fresh air into a genre that I stopped reading simply because every book was pretty much the same. There is nothing wrong with historicals but the same 19th century stories over and over were feeling dull.

A few flappers, some bootlegging and the dangerous mob ties of the 1920's brought a new perspective for me and I loved both books.

Tiny O'Mara is put in a tough spot when her dad is kidnapped after refusing to cooperate with the new mob in town regarding their family bootlegging business. Tiny is forced to try and come up with a lot of money in a short time in a situation that keeps getting more and more dangerous. The fact that she wants to jump Enzo, the mob boss' son who is responsible for her father's kidnapping doesn't make things any easier.

A passionate affair between the two begins which brings even more danger to Tiny's life. Joey has known Tiny for years and is no stranger to the dangerous lifestyle she has become involved with. After all, he lost his dad and cousin in a shooting. Despite their long term antagonism of each other, Tiny also realizes she is attracted to Joey.

A big problem for her... Joey and Enzo are on opposite sides of the new mob ward in Detroit. She is forced into a terrible situation. She wants to keep Joey safe and maintain their growing friendship while balancing her desire to have the lifestyle Enzo can give her: money, power, freedom.

Is Tiny perfect? Definitely not. There were times I wanted to wring her neck but every decision and indecision she makes is for a reason. When you keep in mind the way women functioned in society in the 1920's, I can understand her POV and indecisiveness when it comes to Joey and Enzo. She just wants everyone to be safe and happy even though the more she becomes involved in their world, the less likely that outcome will be.

She's a spunky gal and I was rooting for her independence and happiness the whole time. This does turn into a bit of a love triangle though honestly, by the time you get much into book two, you should have it reasoned out who she will wind up with. No spoilers here!

The sexual tension and steam are off the charts hot and the writing is quick and witty. Though there are a few slower parts, the majority is pretty fast paced and intriguing.

I adored the ending and the epilogue which goes much farther into the future than most of them do. The danger and Tiny's growing confidence and self-awareness are what kept me turning the pages. The life Tiny wants at the end of the story compared to her thoughts in the beginning speak of her growth and maturity. I can't recommend this series highly enough. Even if you don't normally do historicals, this is unlike no other I've read so give it a whirl!

I tried so hard to like this duet, but I just couldn't. This pains me since I love Melanie's books, especially the ones that contain members of the Lupo family. But I absolutely could not stand Tiny. Or Enzo, for that matter. The choices and decisions she made were just SO baffling and infuriating to me. Quite honestly, I cannot figure out how in the world Joey Lupo fell in love with her. Oh, my word! But then, on the other hand, she was thrust into a highly stress inducing situation, all at the hands of the DiFiore's and I don't know how I would have handled all that she did.

Initially I DNF'd this duet, but my OCD eats away at me that I left something unfinished, so I had to go back and read the rest. I am glad I did, the epilogue pretty much made up for everything I didn't like in the story. Boy, those men named Joey Lupo! They are my favorites!

Read my full review on Book Bumblings

This series totally changes the way I feel about historical romance. I had tried a few historicals before, and DNFed all of them. They just felt so historical. The language, the thoughts, the everything, are so different that it's hard to follow. The language is hard to understand, and trying to interpret it gets in the way of getting lost in the story. The thoughts are from a different world that, while interesting, is hard to relate to. Basically, I just could never get pulled into them.

But The Speak Easy Duet is more like a contemporary romance that took a trip in the TARDIS (I like the TARDIS - examples 1 and 2). It was familiar enough for me to relate to, which is what gets me pulled into a book. It was also very new adultish, which makes me wonder if Melanie is a pioneer of historical new adult romance, because I've sure never read a blurb for one before. :P

I've also always loved the twenties. Blame the tap dancer in me, but I have such a sweet spot for the jazz age. That, combined with all my love for Melanie Harlow, and intrigue after reading an excerpt, convinced me to give this a try. And I'm so glad I did.

Nothing like a speak easy!!

Nothing like a lot of action., prohibition, and a love triangle. You have tiny, enzo, and Joey. This book is set in the 1920's with the gangs and a lot of action. You are in for a wild ride reading this set. Buckle up its going to be a bumpy ride. And what you think at the beginning is not what really is at the end.

Having discovered Melanie Harlow through her popular contemporary erotic series, The Frenched Series, I was thrilled to discover and try her lesser known historical THE SPEAK EASY DUET—and I’m so glad that I did! Exciting, surprising and criminally sexy, hustle and heat combine in this enjoyable and fast-paced 1920’s roller-coaster-ride-of-a-romance!

Not only did I get completely caught up the rowdy and intricately woven plot but I fell in love with the novel’s plucky and passionate heroine, Tiny, whose charming perspective makes immersion into her lively story effortless.

And the sex! (*Still fanning self!*) Melanie Harlow writes the hottest scenes featuring the most magnificent and talented males to ever grace your e-reader. And, in this sizzler we lucky readers get not one but TWO stunning men to lust over! Equally spectacular and compelling suitors for Tiny, both Enzo and Joey simply devastate in the bedroom. Forget their loose morals and felonious day jobs, when the sun goes down, so do they, like champions! :) So much naughty fun!

Having read all of Melanie Harlow's amazing books, I was sure I'd love her Historical romance Speak Easy!! I was not disappointed at all!! The story takes place back in 1923 during prohibition. Frances aka "Tiny" helped her father distribute his bootleg whiskey. Her mother had died during birthing her youngest sister, leaving her to care for her sisters. Her father gets kidnapped and held hostage until Tiny can come up with a huge amount of cash. Now Tiny finds herself in deep trouble trying to get her father released with some help from her childhood friend Joey (gorgeous lips & hands) Lupo. Her father is being held by a mob boss Enso DiFiore, who's easy on the eyes and quickly getting under her skin. Can she get her father home, keep herself from falling hard for Enso or will she realize that Joey could make her happy? I loved Tiny's character!! She was feisty, full of passion and hilarious. her family had always come first, now it was her turn!! This duet is so steamy and fast paced that I couldn't put it down!! I'm so thrilled that I finally read this duet, another one of Melanie's books that will always remain as one of my all time favourites!!!

Excellent story, full of prohibition era goodness! I have never read a historical romance set in the 1920's, this was a refreshing idea and a very enjoyable story. Gangsters, bootlegging, speakeasy's, and hot love scenes, what more could you ask for? I fell in love with Tiny, she was a fierce little firecracker! And even though the story was set in the 1920's it did not seem dated. I can't rave enough about this series, I loved every minute of it!

I loved Joey and Tiny. I am somewhat surprised by the bad reviews, because this just seemed so effortlessly perfect to me. Tiny was great, and Joey was just enough of a macho jerk to love to hate. My favorite piece of Melanie Harlow's books is always the end, and she delivered perfectly. I recommend this.
