The United States of Australia is a hilarious and educational introduction to Australia and its quirky inhabitants. Written for Americans, but equally amusing to anyone visiting the shores of the Great Southern Land, this book examines the relationship between Australia and the U.S., including how Australians view their American cousins. Topics include Blokes and Sheilas, Bloody Foster’s, Dangerous Creatures, Talking to Dogs, The GAFA, Speaking Strail-yun and Working for the Queen. Confused? You won’t be after reading this book!
The United States of Australia: An Aussie Bloke Explains Australia to Americans is a humorous, short, fun read, particularly if you are planning a trip to Australia. Cameron Jamieson describes the differences between Australia and America in funny, easy to remember stories. He offers tongue-in-cheek advice on how to stay alive while visiting Australia.
A cute little ditty of a book. If you ever plan to visit or have been to Australia, you will smile. Written by an Aussie bloke who is married to a Yank, he points out the similarities and differences.
Most of the writing is tongue-in-cheek and not a serious read.
I would love to read an addendum since the Trump election. I find Aussies have a very distinct opinion on our current politics.
I needed something lighthearted after reading a couple of heavy books lately and since I'll be heading to Australia in a few weeks, thought this book would give me some pointers on what to expect from our friends below. It's not a tour guide, just an Aussie giving his perspective on what an American may expect interacting with the locals. I really enjoyed that the writer provided an understanding of certain vernacular words a visitor will likely encounter when visiting and most importantly, what kind of “Stralian” beer one should order without looking too much like a tourist. >smile<
I'm heading to Australia in March and wanted to read about the country. This title caught my eye and I'm so glad it did. This was a fun enjoyable read but also informative and down to earth. Looking forward even more to my trip and enjoying the Aussie life style.
This is a cheeky, silly quick little "guide" to Australia for an American audience. I enjoyed it and although it isn't the most well written or professionally produced book out there, it was still a joy to read. I liked the sarcastic humor and I also liked that Cameron put his own spin and personality into the book, which made it much more fun than most guides are I'm sure.
I loved this book! I had to laugh out loud so often. I've met people from Australia and I have a friend who lives on the Gold Coast. I really must visit someday.
Friendly and breezy style, aimed at an American audience for which the author demonstrates true affection. I learned more than a few new things about Australia and Aussies, not to mention Americans, and I now want to visit Down Under more than ever!
Fun, tongue-in-cheek read that imparts useful info. For me, most interesting was WWII info: the threat of Japanese invasion, where Aussie and American troops were sent. I've always been surprised why ANZAC day remains such a significant event, now I have a much clearer understanding.
