I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone interested in a first-hand account of life in slavery times. I was most appreciative of the historical perspectives that were presented through the transcribed interviews and the author's notes. I learned about historical figures that I had never heard of and I have a fuller understanding now of how my ancestors survived the institution of slavery.

An extraordinary book rich with texture and emotion. The letters and commentaries are heartfelt and moving, I wish everyone regardless of race, religion or ethnicity would read this amazing book. I salute the late Dorothy Sterling for amassing so many incredible stories from real people.
