Reissued in a new trade paperback format and design, this "richly researched, sensitively edited, annotated volume portrays indelibly, in their own words, the lives of American black women before, during, and immediately after the Civil War." (Publishers Weekly)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone interested in a first-hand account of life in slavery times. I was most appreciative of the historical perspectives that were presented through the transcribed interviews and the author's notes. I learned about historical figures that I had never heard of and I have a fuller understanding now of how my ancestors survived the institution of slavery.
An extraordinary book rich with texture and emotion. The letters and commentaries are heartfelt and moving, I wish everyone regardless of race, religion or ethnicity would read this amazing book. I salute the late Dorothy Sterling for amassing so many incredible stories from real people.
