He never expected the clues to lead to her…

Edward Adair, heir to the Duke of Boulstridge, is more interested in finding a missing family heirloom than a wife. But when his parents issue an ultimatum – marry or lose your allowance – he reluctantly agrees to attend a house party to find a bride. Instead, he discovers attractive but infuriating Miss Isabella Winthrop in his library, reading the private family journal that holds clues to the location of the heirloom.

Though Isabella finds Edward haughty and arrogant, she offers to take him to the next clue mentioned in the journal if he will pay her, which will enable her to help her brother restore his estate. Edward counters with an offer of an even larger payment…if she agrees to masquerade as his betrothed to deter the other ladies until the house party ends.

As they work together to solve the mystery their mutual attraction grows, but just when they begin to think they should make their engagement real, a secret is revealed that could destroy everything.

Ally has worked as a horse trainer, director of marketing and development, freelance proofreader, and a children's librarian, among other things. None of them were as awesome as writing romance novels (though the librarian gig came closest). She lives in Texas and is convinced her house is shrinking, possibly because she shares it with three kids, five dogs, a cat, a rabbit, and assorted reptiles. Oh, and her husband.

Ally likes to curse in Russian because very few people know what she's saying, and spends most of what would be her spare time letting dogs in and out of the house and shuttling kids around. She has many stories in her head looking for an opportunity to escape onto paper. She writes historical romance set in Regency England and Imperial Russia.

You can find Ally on her website, Facebook, and Twitter, though she makes no claims of using any of them properly.

*An ARC was given in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the writer and the publisher for the opportunity to read this.*

How to Bewitch an Earl is my first Ally Broadfield book, and is most probably my last. I judge novels based on how well they are written, how likeable the characters are, and how beautifully the plot is executed. Unfortunately, this book was not able to pass these criteria.

First, the writing was painfully simplistic and awkward. I'm one of those readers who put a high value on the prose, so reading this really grated on my nerves. The dialogues were a torture to read through; the conversations between the characters were mechanical and lifeless. I understand that others may not be so picky about the writing and may rate this differently, but I am. And I'm sorry, but I prefer my novels to be well-written, like those penned by Julia Quinn, Mary Balogh and Victoria Alexander.
description

Second, the plot was executed poorly. For instance, in the Prologue, the issue about the tiara was not properly established. It was like it was merely thrusted upon the reader. I would have appreciated it if the writer created the atmosphere first, before opening about the heirloom. As a result, the main conflict in the novel felt really weak. It was hardly compelling enough to hold my interest. It's such a shame, really, because it was such an intriguing premise. If only it was better executed.

Third—and I believe the most important reason—the characters were not likeable, and I blame this on the lack of proper characterisation. Isa was really wishy-washy and uninteresting. Edward acted like a petulant child most of the time. Ugh. Really. I wanted to choke him for being so selfish and immature. For example, after the Big Reveal, he raged at Isa for not telling him something (and believe me, it was nothing serious). He even went so far as to call her a whore and telling his parents that he won't marry her even if there's a chance that Isa's pregnant (!!!!!!).
description

SERIOUSLY, DUDE????? You rage like this just because of something so shallow? Bullshit.

Sigh. This was just... really bad. I was really tempted to give this a 2 star rating, but Edward just angered the hell out of me. Ugh.

This was another cute book by Ally Broadfield. I thought Edward and Isabelle were good characters. I especially liked the mystery surrounding the lost tiara. I thought that added an element to the story that made the book more interesting. This is my 2nd book by Ally that I've read in the past month. I do like her style with the mysteries, the regency era, and just a touch of humor. I wouldn't hesitate to keep reading her stories.

Update 12/01/2015

How to Bewitch an Earl by Ally Broadfield is a Victorian Romance with a big slide of mystery and treasure hunt. Broadfield made a good work mixing two of my favorites things on HR books. A treasure hunt with tricky hints and a money agreement that leads to more, even in the main characters don’t want it to.

You know how most of the heroes of HR books came from horrible families. Except for the Bridgertons, of course, they were the dream family of that century. And I think it’s the same with the Adair Family, their parents are so in love with each other and love their children even more–if you’ve read the first book in this series you know how good they are –. I think that’s one of the reasons I enjoyed this book from the beginning.

Edward isn’t a broken boy who doesn’t know how to love someone nor he is a cold-hearted rake. He is just an earl too young to settle down, who only purpose on life is to find the lost tiara of his great-great-great-great grandmother following the hints left in her diary so many years ago. Which is said is covered with pink diamonds –I didn’t know those exists in that century.

What’s the big deal? His father, the Duke of Boulstridge, thinks is time for Edward to take more responsibilities. And in 19th century that could be easily translate to find an eligible blued-blooded girl to marry.

Another think I love about HR books are secrets, these books are full of them. And Miss Isabella Winthrop is the biggest one. A beautiful, well manner young lady who is hiding as the companion girl of an elder woman, a friend of the duchess. Said friend is invited to the Duchess of Boulstridge’s party in the countryside, because you can have a house full of young eligible ladies with just one earl looking for a wife.

That’s how Isabella meets Edward and I’m so happy to said it was hate at first side.

What a presumptuous, odius, loathsome, unpleasant man.
See? No insta love for this couple.

They found themselves in a funny situation in a library –the best place to have fun as always –and they can’t stand the sight of the other.

But when Isabella finds the diary of Edward’s great-…-great grandmother and offers her help in exchange of an enormous quantity of money. They start to spending a lot of unchaperoned hours together. And you know what happen next… I know you do.

She leaned toward him, she couldn’t stop herself.
He met her halfway and pressed his lips softly to hers.

It was so much fun reading this book and trying to –and failing to –resolve the mystery. It took just two days full of laugh and exciting moments. I was hanging by a thread at the last chapters knowing that a plot twist was coming but not knowing exactly when.

Ally Broadfield has done an amazing job with this story. She has created strong characters full of personalities. It would be almost impossible not fall in love with them. And I know she will do a great job with the next book in this series, which I want to read right away.

For Julia Quinn’s fans, How to Bewitch an Earl is a story that will find its way to your heart without you realize it. But believe me, there isn’t any regret in reading this book.

3.75 stars - My review cross-posted from Wit and Sin: http://witandsin.blogspot.com/2015/11...

How to Bewitch an Earl is an entertaining, fast-paced romance. I’m a sucker for a story with a treasure hunt (especially if diamonds are involved) and author Ally Broadfield made the search for the missing tiara a fun one. Add in some highly entertaining secondary characters, secrets, and a romance and it’s no wonder I had a hard time putting How to Bewitch an Earl down.

Edward has wanted to find the missing family tiara ever since he was a child. He’s obsessed with finding it, and since his father is reluctant to give up any control over the family estates, Edward focuses wholly on the tiara and being the frivolous heir. His parents have finally had enough and have decided it’s time for him to settle down, but at the house party they arrange it’s not a simpering debutante who catches Edward’s eye, but the secretive Isabella Winthrop. Isa is hiding her aristocratic heritage and acting as a companion so that she may help her brother pull the family estate out of debt. All she wants is to blend into the background, but sparks fly when she meets Edward. Attraction and temper combined makes for a rocky start to Isa and Edward’s relationship, but their feelings take a turn when Isa begins to help Edward on his quest for the tiara.

It’s easy to like Isa. She’s not perfect, but she has a good heart and is a bright, likeable heroine. Edward is where the story hits a snag for me. I wanted to like him so badly, but he’s unquestionably spoiled. It’s logical for him to be that way given the time period, but I had hoped to see him grow as a character over the course of the story. To me, Edward never really matured, only being the hero he should be when things went his way. For me this was a problem that keeps me from rating the story higher. That being said, I cannot deny I was drawn into the story, even with my reservations about the hero.

How to Bewitch an Earl is the second book in Ms. Broadfield’s How To series, but you don’t have to have read How to Beguile a Duke in order to enjoy Edward and Isa’s story. That being said, part of the fun of the book for me was revisiting Nick and Catherine (Edward’s parents and the hero and heroine of the first book). I think I liked them even more in this story than their own and it was lovely seeing how they have and have not changed over the years. How to Bewitch an Earl also introduces Edward’s sister Louisa, and I absolutely adored her. I desperately hope Ms. Broadfield writes a book for her and the man I hope will be her hero. The Adair family is unique and a lot of fun to read about, and I hope to see more of them in the future.

This is book two in the series "How To". I will say that I have read the first book "How to Beguile a Duke' and feel that it is helpful if you read that book first. You can go without reading it but I found that I was glad that I did not. This is a sweet story that did not have any real bad person and was basically a story about Edward Adair, heir to the Duke of Boulstridge and Miss Isabella Winthrop. Edward parents are throwing a house party for Edward to find a bride. Edward doesn't want to be married yet but see no choice as his father is threatening to cut him off with out a penny. Isabella is having to work as a paid companion to help her brother out to pay off the family bills. Isabella is attending the house party and meets Edward. They both set out to solve a family mystery that is been in Edwards family for years. This draws them closer together and set them to pretend to be engaged to hold of the young women after Edwards and Isabella thinks with the money Edward is paying her she can help her brother. The just didn't count how their feels would turn to the real thing. A really nice read and I hope that you will like it too!

I like to read Ally's books in this series. It makes it different because there is a hidden piece of jewelry that no one has found yet. Spoiler. I enjoy her story line with her characters who share their happy and sad. Edward wants to find that tiara. He has to read a diary with hints. Isa is a paid companion and finds the diary in the library after the Duchess gives her carte blanc to read whatever she wants. Edward comes in and jumps on her. Her Grace comes to her rescue. He finally agrees she can try to find it while he is forced to find a wife at their house party. Spoiler. The rest of the spoilers would ruin this story. I would recommend this to a mature reader. It is hard to put down and reads quickly. I liked this story. I hope you want to read it too. Don't pass this by and enjoy reading this book! I have this book for an honest review for NetGalley.

Given to me for an honest review. I believe I haven't read any of Ms Broadfield's other books, but she will be put on my favorite author list (only 5+ stars allowed). This has been an enjoyable book from page 1. A little boy grows up and still wants to find the tiara that is hidden somewhere in his house. His parents think that he is not taking life seriously enough. Edward thinks that everything he could manage his father, the Duke, would have the final say. His parents are having a house party so Edward can choose a bride from the visitors. He can invite some male friends. Will he be able to find someone special who doesn't care about the money and the Dukedom? Or will he have to settle for someone who he might be able to tolerate?

What an a-maze-ing premise. A twist, here, somewhat of a turn there.

Edward has heard about the missing family jewel – a pink crown hidden by his great-grandmother since he was a child. It was his favorite bedtime story. He’s always believed he’d one day find it, and his desire grows right along with his height. The problem is, not only did age bring about enough freedom and independence to search wholeheartedly for the crown, but it brought about the need for an heir. His parents wanted him married and taking more responsibility for his life and property.

Marriage is not in the cards right now. He wants to spend his time on the hunt. When his parents throw a party for him to pick a bride, he runs into Isa. She’s read his family journal which contains clues to the missing crown, and now she’s just as intrigued as he is. She’s also harboring a secret. Hell-bent on restoring her family’s home and making things easier on her brother, she agrees to pretend to be Edward’s betrothed in exchange for money. As the two search for the crown, they find more than they bargained for, and soon their attraction to each other carries more weight than the diamonds.

Broadfield most definitely hit the mark with originality. I gladly joined the hunt, and followed along willingly. I do wish there would’ve been more clues, but I enjoyed Edward and Isa working together. I liked that Edward’s family was not as intense as I thought they’d be. They were very accepting to be members of the ton, and it was refreshing. His dad did want Edward to be more responsible, but what good parent doesn’t want that for their child? His father’s disappointment had nothing to do with Isa, or her status- which is usually the case in historical romances where an aristocrat falls for someone not of proper status- but was only about Edward’s own actions, or lack thereof. This was a welcome change.

The ending left me wanting. Edward’s turning point came about rather quickly, and the problems with his father vanished with a few quick, although meaningful, words. I expected more from the climax, but the story was intriguing.

Ally Broadfield has written an adventurous, fast-past romance that will draw you in and capture you till the very end. The characters are multi-dimensional, well written and relatable. The secondary characters are just as fun and interesting as the hero and heroine. I would definitely recommend grabbing this story, curling up in your comfy reading spot and get lost in these intriguing pages.
This escape will take you on a treasure hunt that will lead to a very expensive tiara with rare pink diamonds that has been hidden for years, belonging to the Duchess of Boulstridge’s family.

You will meet Isabella Winthrop, who is the companion to a friend of the Duchess, who will be attending a house party at the Boulstridge estate. Her identity is a secret that must be kept in order for her to help her brother restore his estates after their father destroyed.
You will also meet Edward, heir to the dukedom. His parents are insisting that he settle down and do something worthwhile with his life. They decide to host a host party and have invited several very eligible ladies for Edward to meet and consider for a bride. Edward has no interest in marrying, at least not yet.

When Edward arrives home and heads to the library, he doesn’t expect to meet a beautiful feisty woman reading the family’s secret journal. When he becomes angry and berates Isa, be gives as good as she receives. When she realizes she knows the first clue, she tells Edward that she will take him to it only if he pays her a large amount of money. He later offers her more money if she will pretend to be his betrothed. Hs logic is she will help him stir the ladies at the party towards the other eligible gentleman and it will boost her reputation to have been engaged to the heir of a dukedom.

Edward and Isa work together to find the tiara and deceive everyone at the house party till an unexpected guest arrives and all of the secrets being kept are exposed. Will Edward and Isa find the treasure? Will their fake betrothed become real or will all chances of that be lost when Isa’s secrets come to light?

I'm so excited to share this sequel to How to Beguile a Duke with readers!

I had so much fun writing the first installment in this series, so I was thrilled when my publisher and editor asked me to write a sequel.

Edward's character came fairly easily as his position and circumstances were set. He is the heir to a large and wealthy dukedom. A duke in Regency/Victorian England was the equivalent of a modern day rock star, movie star, or billionaire. He has everything anyone could ever want, right? Money, power, and the example of true love from his parents. Except, sometimes it's not so easy to live up to everyone's expectations or know who to trust when everybody wants something from you.

Isabella is the first character I've written who shares some of my life experiences. Due to circumstances out of her control, she is alone, isolated from her family and working as a paid companion so she can help her brother, her only remaining relative, get back on his feet. She's used to being unnoticed and ignored, until an opportunity arises that might allow her to improve her situation.

I sincerely hope you enjoy Edward and Isabella's story. Happy Reading!

This is book 2 in the How To series.

Miss Isabella Winthrop is just trying to make enough money as a companion to help her brother pay off their debts. But when she ends up at a house party with nothing to do, she ends up helping to try and solve the mystery of the missing heirloom. Which of course means that she spends quite a bit of time with Edward Adair, the heir to the Duke of Boulstridge.

Edwards parents are demanding that he marry, but all he wants to do is find the missing heirloom. He didn't count on getting help from the beguiling Isabella. Paying Isabella to pose as his indented keeps the other guests out of the way but he didn't count on being so attracted to his partner in crime.

Will their pretend betrothal become one in truth?

I enjoyed this story. I did really liked all the bantering between Isabella and Edward. This story had the right combination of romance with just enough mystery added in to make it just that much more interesting.

I can't wait to see what Broadfield has in store for us next!

Isabella is hiding from society, no one can know of her past. She is currently employed as a ladies maid and is attending a house party the house of the Duke of Boulstridge.
Edward is the son of the Duke and he is supposed to find a bride, the pressure has been mounting for sometime, and so he agrees to come and attend the house party with the hopefuls.
Isabella is not a hopeful, and she is just looking for solitude so when Edward stumbles upon her, in the library reading his family journal, she does not know what to think.
Edward is clearly upset that she is reading the old journal, but the author is long since gone, and she does not see the harm.
They embark on a puzzle which is found in the journal, and together they will attempt to find the missing Tiara.

I received a free copy of this book in return for my honest opinion.
I liked this book and the characters inside its covers I look forward to reading more by this author.

Historical romance is not my favorite genre, but I really enjoyed this story about Edward, an earl and heir to a dukedom that needs to find a wife or be disinherited, and Isabel, daughter of an earl, masquerading as a commoner and acting as a lady's companion, while helping her brother to restore the family finances. Their initial meeting doesn't go well but as they work together to try and find a missing family heirloom, they become closer and closer, and when she agrees to Edward's proposal to be his fake fiance, they both find their hearts becoming involved as well. This is a romance that makes you feel good while being sweet and sexy as well. I really liked all of the characters and can't wait to read How to Beguile a Duke, the romance of Edward's parents; and hopefully, a story about Edward's sister Louisa and Lord Thornbrook. This book is a great read.

This was another fast and fluffy story by Ally Broadfield. I thought the mystery of the tiara was an interesting spin to bring the main characters together and ultimately get them working together despite their initial negative feelings toward each other.

Broadfield's writing is well done and I found myself pulled into Edward's and Isabella's stories. Isabella has a secret she is hiding and even though she finds herself falling for Edward, she avoids telling him about it and ultimately this becomes an issue. Admittedly, I didn't find the secret to be that big of a deal but Edward had different thoughts.

If you are looking for a quick read that has a bit of a mystery along with the romance, consider checking this one out.

I received an ARC but that does not colour my review in any way.
Edward Adair, the Earl of Kenworth has been given an ultimatum by his father. He must stop wasting his life, get married and start taking some responsibilities. To that end they invite several young women to a house party. Edward would rather be searching for the family mystery of a hidden tiara.
Isabella Winthrop is a paid companion , and has accompanied her employer to a house party. She is hoping none of the guests will know who she really is, so will do her best to be unobtrusive. When she finds an old journal she gets caught up in trying to solve the mystery.
This is a lovely historical romance. The characters are fun and realistic. The hunt for the tiara has lasted for generations. It is already responsible for Edwards parents marriage. A very entertaining read.

A delightful romp

Our hero and heroine have great chemistry and the riddle at the heart of the mystery is fun to unravel. It is more a short novella really, or maybe it felt like that because it was a good read. I am still doubtful that well-bred young ladies, especially those who have to be concerned about scandal, are so prone to act as seductresses with men determined to treat them honourably, but the conventions of the past give way to the mores of today. Not always felicitously from my POV. It jars because the point is underlined early in the book that only a Duke's daughter can act promiscuously and still expect an offer of marriage. Especially if they are not well dowered. There were some glaring anomalies. No young Georgian man would talk of dating someone. It would have been courting. Nor would they have used language like proactive.

You don’t need to have read the first book in the series to enjoy How to Bewitch an Earl, but if you did read How to Beguile a Duke, you definitely have to read this book. This story was a delight from start to finish. The characters were engaging and fun and I enjoyed following Edward and Isa as they worked together to solve the mystery while fighting their attraction to each other.

There’s something special about this book that I can’t quite put my finger on. Ms. Broadfield’s books are well-crafted, with witty dialogue and fast pacing, and though they’re very accessible to a modern audience, they somehow manage to capture the essence of a tradition Regency. I highly recommend this series.

How to Bewitch an Earl is my first read by Ally Broadfield. It won't be my last. Ms Broadfield has crafted a well written book. How to Bewitch an Earl is a fun read from start to finish. Edward and Isa's story is full of drama, humor, a bit of sizzle and lovable characters. How to Bewitch an Earl is a fairly quick read, perfect for those with limited time for reading. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from Ally Broadfield soon. How to Bewitch an Earl is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

I received this from Netgalley/ Entangled in exchange for an honest review. This is book 2 in Ally Broadfield's how to series and I loved it! This book is about the Duke's and Duchess' son Edward who has picked up his parents quest to find a long lost tiara. This was a very good addition to the series. I just loved it so much. I could not put it down. I thought it was odd the Edward turned out to be such a jerk for most of the book. The story was awesome and I loved reading about the budding romance.

***Received an ARC from Netgalley***

It was an altogether good read. I loved the intrigue and the mystery that came along with finding the long lost tiara, I also LOVED the backstory of the duke and duchess. I was a bit disappointed in the ending, at the tiny reason the earl took offense to Isabella for not talking to him sooner. It seemed like it was blown a bit out of proportion in my opinion. I felt like the earl should have been more understanding of the circumstances.

How to Bewitch an Earl was a fun read. Solving the mystery of the missing tiara quickly becomes a secondary plot line to the growing relationship between Edward and Isa. The two moved pretty quickly from enemies to lovers. I liked them as a couple. Some of the dialogue felt a bit young for the characters but I can understand that the author wanted to keep true to period. Overall, I enjoyed this book.

Edward and Isa are a great couple and the attraction between them is genuine. Together they decide to solve a mistery about a missing tiara. Enjoyable read.
