No Awards Appropriate grade levels: K-2 This book is a collection of poems about summer. It contains poems about things you could do in the summer, as well as the different animals/insects that you can see during the summer. The poems remind me of when I was a kid and what my summers were like. I enjoyed these poems a lot. There are many different subject, which is good for different students. The illustrations are also very fun and cute! You could use these poems as transitions, or you could use them to start a writing piece about something each student likes to do in the summer!
Most of my summers as a child were filled with unstructured play and I don’t think my mother cared what we did as long as we didn't tear up the house. Summer is probably my favorite part of the year because my birthday is in July. Moreover, kids need to enjoy their summers so they can have a childhood. Lemonade Sun reminded me of the purpose of this season, fun
Absolutely adore this book! Full of vivid imagery and loads of originality. This book really put Rebecca's name on the map of top contemporary poets. Love it!
Some lovely person recommended these poems, and they are wonderful captures of summer excitement. I wonder if children are still outside as much as the poems show, jumping rope to rhymes, playing marbles and selling lemonade is something I don’t see anymore. The joy of summer plays out by Rebecca in numerous ways. The poems follow the time of a day, from the ‘liquid sweetness’ and ‘splashing sunshine’ of lemonade all the way through to nighttime excitement, ‘moon-skipping’ as ‘fireflies flicker’. I love that she included the treasures of insects, too, like in “Ladybug” where they’re “Smaller/than a button,/bigger than a spot” or the butterfly who sails on “a breath of sky”. Activities also include going barefoot with “dandelions between warm toes”. It’s a book to have to savor for oneself and the memories of past summers, or to share with children in the spring, looking forward to their own summer days.
Personal reaction: I liked this book of poems. They made me think of summer and made me think of the fun things I have done over my summer vacations.
I would read these poems to first graders. I think that these poems are pretty simplistic and rhyming. I would try to incorporate reason one of these poems at the end of every day during the last month of school while the students are getting ready for their summer vacations. I think that these are purely for enjoyment and I think they will have the students excited. From reading these, I think it would also elicit a conversation about what the students are going to be doing over their summer vacations. There is figurative language in these poems and it mostly through the use of personification. Overall though, these poems elicit a feeling of happiness.

I added it because the quality compilation of striking, yet simple poems mixes with beautiful illustrations perfectly and I love summer, as I’m sure many students do.
This book of simple poems about all the different things that happen during the summer brought was very nostalgic for me. From having lemonade stands to watching fireworks on the Fourth of July, the book was very captivating and appealing to my senses. I would recommend this book for all students as a read-aloud by the teacher. There are many places where students could probably relate to what the author's message is (text-to-self practice). I would definitely recommend this book to others. Because this is a book about summer, I would probably use this as an end-of-the-school year book.
I loved this poetry book because it is very positive and uses bright illustrations. The students can recognition the main ideas and go off real world examples. This poetry book is very good about creating activities for the summer. I would use this book towards the end of the year when we are announcing projects or activity ideas for the summer. A lemonade stand is a great way for a child to have fun yet still learning and using his brain.
