My brother recommended this to me, but unfortunately, I couldn’t enjoy it as much as he did.

The story is around a bunch of kids who are unhappy (the MC is just unlucky, whilst other has a fragile body and another get lost real easy). The teacher in class 1-7, which they attend to, is focused on making them ‘happy’. And so, they have different activities to make it so… and that’s basically it.

My problem with this story is that it’s filled with cliché characters that I don’t particularly enjoy. I feel like it’s written for a male audience that doesn’t really know what women are or behave, so I’m not quite sure I’ll be continuing the series, ‘cause if I’m being honest, I fall asleep three times with one single volume, that’s how boring it was to me.

Anyway, the only thing that is worth mentioning is the art style, which is kind of cute, but nothing you haven’t seen before.

Review for the first 2 volumes.

I saw the anime when it first aired, and really liked the show. So I was really delighted that Yen Press was going to translate and bring the manga to the West.

It took me a while to get these manga, mostly because I was waiting for the price to go down. Yes, Yen Press is quite costly. Luckily, I was able to find them on Bookdepository for a good price (8/9 euro). Now it is just waiting for the rest of the volumes to go out so I can buy them.

What did I think of this manga? Was it as good as the anime? Oh, yes, definitely. Even though the anime spread the contents of these first 2 volumes all over the season (and I am guessing Volume 3 as well). Several things that happen in the manga first don't happen until much later in the anime (for instance the cooking class in Volume 2 doesn't happen until episode 9 of the anime, or visiting Hanako near the beginning of Volume 1 when she is sick doesn't happen until episode 7), and some things are not even yet mentioned while the anime already told us about them (Timothy). I do think the manga paced it better, with how they did the events it felt more natural, and more logical. Well, with the exception of one event. Hibari and Botan visiting Hanako. It felt too soon now.

The manga is about 3 girls (though later on we also have 2 others) who seem to have extraordinary unluckiness. Hanako/Anne gets into more trouble then should be healthy (and she stays happy through everything), Hibari is unlucky in love (though I think she isn't, because she is happy about it), Botan, well Botan breaks everything and is constantly on the verge of death. As I said later on we get 2 more characters. Hibiki whose sense of direction is just beyond hopeless, and Ren who is constantly getting swamped by animals (and I am guessing humans) of the female persuasion.

The manga is all about them and their bad fortunes/luck, and there time at the Happiness Class. Even in two volumes I saw them grow a lot. Of course they are still unlucky, but they are making friends, they are becoming more and more happy. It is such a delight to see this happen.

The story and all the unfortunate events that happen will make you laugh, and also wonder how anyone could have such bad luck.

I do have to say that Botan, but also later Hibiki, are the two characters I like the least. Botan because of how she treats herself and how she deems herself to be unworthy. Hibiki because of her ego and how she treats people. She thinks she is all that, but she isn't.

The art is fabulous, I just love the way the characters are drawn, and there is a high attention to details. I just love it!

Would I recommend this series? Yes. As for me, I can't wait for the next volumes!

So a girl with bad luck, a girl with a crush on a sign, and a girl prone to accidents walk into a bar — excuse me, school. No, this isn’t this start of a joke; it’s the plot of Anne Happy.

On the first day of high school, Ruri spots a girl dangling from a bridge and tries to rescue her. The girl, Anne, also happens to be a new student, and she’s in Ruri’s class to boot. The two also meet classmate Botan, and then they learn why they’re all in the same class: to find happiness.

Many manga have a protagonist with bad luck, but Anne Happy is one of the few where all the main characters have bad luck. Ruri (nicknamed Hibari) has an…unusual crush. Botan is both super-negative and physically frail. Anne’s (nicknamed Hanako) luck is amazing in the worst possible ways, but she’s eternally optimistic. With all their bad luck, this series is less “cute girls doing cute things” and more “cute girls trying to do things.” It’s hard for the three friends to do simple activities like hold on to an egg when Anne is being attacked by animals or Botan has collapsed from anemia, and field trips turn into a life-or-death struggle.

One of the dangers of comedy is for the humor to become repetitive. This is only the first volume, but I don’t know how long Anne defying the odds or Botan not being able to shake hands without breaking a bone will keep me entertained. Ruri is also in-between being the straight man (tsukkomi) and acting just as silly as the other girls. I think the joke about her crush will get old pretty fast.

Out of the entire volume, it was the last couple of chapters I enjoyed the most. Two new characters are introduced, the hostile Hibiki and cool beauty Ren, and everyone finds themselves playing a life-size board game. I don’t know if it’s the ridiculousness of a full-scale game or the humor of Ren hitting Hibiki with a die because of Hibiki’s attitude, but I found this section more fun than typical scenes of bridge breaking and animal attacks. I guess I won’t find out until the next volume whether it was the new characters or the situation that upped the enjoyment factor for me.

I can’t help but wonder what direction the story would have taken if this was a whole-class ensemble cast. Lots of manga have the directionally-challenged character, but what happens when a whole group of people who can’t tell north from south get together? We do see the teacher having to lasso one group of these characters, and I’m sure their story would be pretty entertaining. Aside from those students, what other “negative karma” is found in this class? There are 40 students in 1-7, but the rest are limited to being background characters. I know Anne Happy is going to focus on the three (five?) main girls, but I think there’s a lot of comedic potential with a whole class of unhappy and/or unlucky students.

While the title itself is a pun on (or could be translated as) the word “unhappy,” fortunately there isn’t a lot of wordplay in this manga. This makes for both a smooth translation and reading-experience. A few translation notes are included, and that’s really all that’s needed. If you want a comedy where you don’t have to rely on footnotes or extensive manga/anime exposure, then Anne Happy is for you.

The art is pretty bright and cheerful, but it also suffers from early-volume syndrome. This seems to be mostly due to Cotoji’s adult doujinshi and manga background. (Fortunately, if you’re worried, there’s minimal fanservice here, and most of the characters don’t have large, accentuated chests.) Ruri’s cat-eyes seem to be the biggest issue art-wise, as often her pupils just blend right in with her thick eyebrows. Chapters are fast-paced; so much so that the chapters don’t even add “the end” when they finish. I was surprised that Anne herself does not spend most of her time in super-deformed mode. While she is the shortest of the three main girls, she actually does look like a high schooler instead of, say, a blob or an elementary school student. I liked saving her chibi form for the humorous moments instead for most of the time.

Anne Happy is the kind of series that can go one of two ways: it can stay the typical school story but with a large helping of unfortunate events, or it can just go full-blown comedy with lots of absurd situations and “training events.” Personally, I’m hoping for the latter. I think this is a decent opening volume, but the next will likely shape which direction the story will go.

Anne Happy is a fun manga about a group of students at a prestigious school who are assigned to a particular class due to their "bad luck" or "misfortune". While the other classes at the school are dedicated to science and the arts, class 7 is dedicated to "the pursuit of happiness".

In particular, at least at first, this story is focused on three girls, Ruri, Botan, and the titular Anne. Of course, a long series of gags ensue as the girls try to navigate the ins and outs of life at their new class and school. Along with these jokes is an actual narrative that tells a nice slice of life story about the girls and their lives together as friends.

There are some unfortunate ideas about putting the students in this class against their will and so forth. The teacher is scary to consider were this real. But for a fun, more light-hearted manga like this, it's best to take things as they are and enjoy the funny and cute circumstances the characters find themselves in, as well as the humor of the teacher's wild mood swings.

The two aspects that make this manga worth reading, in my opinion, are the cute story and the art. The art is both beautiful and very vivid. The characters just jump out at you, look great, and their facial expressions nicely convey the emotions of the moment.

Of the girls, Ruri is the pov character right now, though I hear that'll change to Anne eventually. Ruri is also my fave character. There is something about her kind-hearted, yet tsundere-ish attitude that is endearing.

Loved this story and look forward to the next volume.

I've read the first two volumes, and the story is nonsensical fluff which is slightly enjoyable at times, but is not really worthy of discussion. What needs to be discussed is the creepiness of the art. The characters, we are told, are first year high school students, but as depicted they look like hyper-sexualized elementary school girls, or middle school at best. (Look at the cover closely and tell me that's not an eight year old licking a phallic symbol.) As written, the characters' personalities seem to be about as mature as elementary or middle school students. Also, there is a strange absence of male characters, leaving all these weirdly sexualized girls constantly touching each other while emoting and posing in ways that left me feeling like a perverted voyeur. Plus there is all the fetish stuff going on, with one character being repeatedly splashed or drenched in water, an easily injured one writhing in pain again and again, one lounging in lingerie and forced to dress as a Playboy bunny, another as a furry, and the teacher who carries large guns. One student even has a crush on a very phallic looking construction worker sign. So who is the intended audience here? This series just has too many twisted implications for me to keep reading.

I wanna say this is a 3.75/5 read.
This was entertaining. A story about girls with various and unbelievable amounts of "bad luck" going to a school that helps them overcome their issues, even if those methods are questionable at best. I don't recommend anyone going into this looking for an actual plot, because the most this series seems to offer is fluffy comedy with a mix of zaniness.
I think the characterization is good, the setting and art looks cute, and let's be honest, I was a sucker for Cotoji's chibi style. Though, personally, I want to put this series on the back burner as I'm not quite sure I found this intriguing enough to keep my copy of the book.
That being said, I do recommend this to anyone looking for a light, cutesy-looking manga to pass the time or a starter series for the younger generation to use to get into anime and manga.
(And I give this the thumbs-up for the younger audience, parents. There is only one moment of cursing, but other than that, nothing else was giving me red flags. Again, there's the concern about the character Hibari and her crush, but as I said, it's all for comedy, so it should not be taken seriously)

Anne Happy is one of my favorite manga's!!!

I'll be honest the story is really good. A whole class that is either unhappy or misfortune, and learning how to be happy is very cute and very creative.

I love the main characters, my favorite is Baton. She's so cute and I always feel bad for her when she gets hurt. I also love Hanako, she's very interesting with the fact she has both bad and good luck.
I also lied Ren, her with any animal is adorable.

This was the first manga i ever read and it has become one of my favorites, I defiantly recommend this book especially for people who haven't read manga before, this is defiantly a good one to start with.

The obvious attraction for this manga is its art, particularly if one is fond of moe art. The mangaka has put in the effort to provide quality art on every page (a rarity for manga) and I am a sucker for good art when I am buying. I feared that the story would be awful but, in fact, it's not. It's not great either, but I don't expect to experience pain while reading it. I have the complete set (ten volumes).

Very fan-servicey with little story. Sorta cute, but I don't find it very interesting. An unlucky girl finds herself in a special class devoted to helping the (very unlucky) students find happiness and better luck. Eh. Seems to me like a whole manga devoted to "clumsy girl is cute" stereotypes. I didn't find enough purpose to keep me interested.

I'm not a comic aficionado by any means, nor am I familiar with manga. This came across my desk and I read it. It was quick. Because of my lack of standing in the comic community I won't give it a critique. It is very cute; I can see it appealing to young girls, and maybe boys who like manga. I'm too old to appreciate it.

It's basic in a lot of ways and a little on the inane side. A girl gets called up to a new school and discovers that the group that's attending the school are unhappy/unlucky folks that may be changed in attending the school under the guidance of their teacher and with each other.

Plenty of adorable closeups of the girls, but less of a story to keep interested.

Found it kind of boring, it's mainly about three girls who are either unlucky or fragile that become friends during school.

Almost too cutesy and fluffy. All the unlucky students at a school are put into one class where their goal is to find happiness. It follows three girls weighed down by misfortune as they just do uninteresting things like go on a hike or eat lunch. Also one of the girls has a crush on a construction site sign guy. It was very strange.

Pretty normal school girls becoming friends antics until the teacher brings out a gun. Then some things start getting weird as they're forced to play this weird life-size board game with punishments. At that point I was like what is going on.

If you're looking for some nonsensical fluff I guess try this? Moe comedy where you can't think about the plot too much.

This series has a theme that isn't seen a lot in manga or books especially with this kind of theme: Unhappiness and unluckiness, all the main characters have some kind of bad luck, wether it be an obsession or just a constant problem for many of them, they're all positive and eventually become 'lucky' in their own ways, the other books starting with book one to book 4 I think, are available at the books a million near the mall with a big selection of manga.

Me pareció linda la historia, pero creo que el principio no fue tan bueno como en el anime, pero al final se compuso bastante, y me quede con ganas de más. Ya quiero tener el próximo tomo en mis manos
