After having her heart broken by Echo, Dixie Dunn makes a new life for herself, away from the Kings Of Chaos. Now, she must return in order to get her stubborn father back to fighting shape after a heart attack. She knows she’ll have to face Echo, as he has made it clear over the years that she still belongs to him. But she refuses to give him any chance to crush her heart again.
Echo, Joel Spencer knows that Dixie hates him, but he also knows she yearns for him. After being forced by his hateful father to practically leave her at the altar when they were teens, he realizes that he has his work cut out for him. One thing is on his side, he knows what she wants and needs. This time, he WILL make her his again, and to hell with whoever gets in his way.
Shyla Colt is the sassy USA Today Bestselling author of the popular series Kings of Chaos and Dueling Devils M.C. This genre-hoppers stories feature three of her favorite things: strong females, pop culture, and alternate routes to happy ever after. Listening to her Romani soul, she pens from the heart, allowing the dynamic characters, eccentric interests, and travels as a former flight attendant to take her down untraveled roads. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, this mid-west girl is proud of her roots. She used her hometown and the surrounding areas as a backdrop for a number of books. So, if you're a Buckeye, keep an eye out for familiar places.
As a full-time writer, stay at home mother, and wife, there's never a dull moment in her household. She weaves her tales in spare moments and the evenings with a cup of coffee or tea at her side and the characters in her head for company.
A solid 3.5. I've been waiting for Dixie Rose's story and it did not disappoint. I liked that racism was not handled with complete kid gloves. In all honesty some parts could have been darker, but I'm not sure if it would have added anything useful to the story. Overall, I loved the honesty of the characters.
Now, my only beef is one that I've shared over and over again. STOP WITH THE DADDY TALK! It makes my skin crawl and bile rise up. The words "daddy" and any talk of penises should not be in the same sentence. Not even on the same planet. Not even the same Galaxy. Look, when someone says "Daddy" I think of a man who loves me to pieces with no fashion sense and a collection of sweatbands for some reason. As far as I'm concerned, I came here via stork from a cabbage patch. That's how gross Daddy talk is to me. It makes me turn prudish, irrational, and delve head-first into denial.
4 solid stars for me. Although towards the end there rang a very scooby do moment. (I would've gotten away with it if it weren't for you meddling kids!). It was an enjoyable read
I swear GoodReads is going to make me lose my religion. I wrote a detailed review for this today and bam! Lost. To recap!
I really enjoyed this book, for the most part.
Things that worked:
Joel/Echo. Yassssss!!! Lawd geezus! Where do I find one of him? He was perfectly written. No nonsense, protective, authoritative and very 'don't make me say it twice, did I stutter the first time?' I love how he loved D'Rose, and how they saw their future together. Some authors try to do too much with alpha characters - not this one. An alpha just IS. Good job here.
D'Rose - I liked her and, goodness knows, given my thoughts on most women in romance novels, especially biker ones, this is a modern miracle in and of itself. She did annoy me a time or two, being all 'it's not about me' but having irrational tantrums everytime Echo tried to make a move, but we got our mojo back in quick time. I liked that she had her own life and history and, while she was not a pushover, she had no problem being the yang to Echo's yin. She made it clear what she expected going in to the relationship but, once everything was on the table, she had no problem playing her position. The author did a nice job here of showing that being submissive to your man does not mean being silly and weak.
The flashbacks - I loved seeing them as teenagers. Echo realizing how his feelings evolved over time was great to witness, and him him shoving Ralph to the floor to kiss D'Rose's feet for insulting her was everything! LOL
Club business - Loved that the church meetings and club activity were a decent chunk of the book. Loved the camaraderie among the guys and the relationship between Echo and his brother. Also loved the moments with D'Rose and her dad. All well done.
Things that didn't work so well for me:
The cover, or more specifically, the guy on the cover. There is nothing about that slim, scraggly bearded, muscle-less, ink-less dude that screamed Echo. The book says he is 'broad'. Hmm. Not so much. I had to ignore that guy and create my own Echo in my head. The model himself is fine enough, but didn't work for this book. Loved the woman though! YAS!!
The use of first person, present tense. Really, this should be banned. At the very least, authors should seriously reconsider writing in this voice. Nothing almost guarantees your book will read like bad fanfiction like having the opening line be something like, 'I open my eyes as the alarm clock goes off,' or 'I eye myself in the mirror as I get ready." Whenever I see this, my brain immediately shuts down and it is a massive effort to continue.
The Daddy Talk, but not for the reason you think. You say 'Daddy kink' and I (excitedly) say, 'Where it at tho?' I am front and center! But there is an art to it. The author makes it clear, early on, that this is not a lifestyle for them; it's just a bit of bedroom play. Great. Daddy talk purely as kinky erotica is sexy too. But, there has to be consistency. I get that couples that do this don't do it every time they have sex, but to just have Daddy this and Daddy that coming out of nowhere, at random points in the book, made me cringe; I couldn't connect with it. D'Rose also didn't have to address Echo as such every third line, when she decided to get into this mode. We get it. It was just doing too much and made the whole thing corny and uncomfortable. I skimmed quickly, with one eye closed. I had to create a new shelf just for this book.
The flashbacks - Flashbacks are tricky anyway, and I do empathize with authors trying to get them exactly right, but a transitional sentence and then a new chapter starting with 'Past' is not the business. It almost always yanked me out the story and I had to force myself not to skip them. I was glad I didn't but it was a struggle.
Echo's excuse for bailing on D'Rose was weak. Yes, it was to protect her, but his father taking his phone was not a strong enough reason to not contact her for a full year. He could have used someone else's cell, used a payphone. It just didn't hold water for me.
D'Rose's clinical way of speaking, when it came to her/other's issues. I gave her a pass because I know she is a psychologist, but it was still stilted at times and sounded like she was reading from a textbook.
Parts of the book went on too long and by 80% I was skimming to get to the end. I get all the cameos from the other characters, and it was nice that Echo and D'Rose had getaways and went to concerts, but I was really just waiting to see what would happen with the Aryan Nation moles.
All in all, this was a solid 3 star read for me. Great characters and a HAWT hero, and likable heroine.
Recommended for those who like biker romances, with a heroine with a lick of sense.
NOT recommended for those who have a problem with a woman being marked (tatooed) as the property of a man, or with women in 'traditional' roles ie taking care of the home, catering to and submitting to her man. Then again, you probably wouldn't be reading a biker book if you did LOL
Been actively looking for interracial romance stories. Why? Because they are necessary. because they are reality. Because they need to be out there.
This story does it all. It exposes what racism is and what it does to people. How it can destroy lives and love. I like that Shyla Colt didn't shy away from the ugliness and the choices some people make when being influenced by family. When hateful suggestions and rhetoric is being plowed into your brain on a daily.
We get some good backstory and sexy times with a load of regret and reality. I loved that both characters come together after years of estrangement.
My only regret is that no one stood up for the heroine when she was going through shit with a racist MC member when she was young. No one did the right thing and no one apologized to her for their BS.
Despite this, I loved the story, but please Shyla... Redo the cover!!!! It's really tacky! You need someone to do your book covers, PM me!!! PLEASE!!! I'll give it a go for free.
Dixie Dunn knew once all about soul mates and hope, until Echo single handedly destroyed her. Raised in a bikers world surrounded by racial hate, Dixie took the brunt of it all especially Echo's father. They fell for one another hard, but when Echo left her without word she was destroyed. Now back home once again to take care of her father, Dixie is thrust back into the biker world and Echo's life.
Echo sees a second chance and he has been waiting for this day. He has to get Dixie to listen, there is a lot she doesn't know but Echo has been working on fixing every problem in their path. Can Dixie forgive him and what about those in the club who still hold the same beliefs they did when she was growing up?
Thought provoking. I thought this was really well written and dealt with a subject I have not seen in a biker story before. I liked Dixie and Echo, they had a lot of chemistry and even though Echo was alpha male there is another side to him you will love. Great read.
I liked both Dixie Rose and Joel/Echo a lot, and their second chance at love was a great story. It took a while for Echo to grow up and be his own man, but when he did, he knew what he wanted - Dixie Rose.
I've read the first five books in this series now, and I have grown to really like these MC guys and their women. I enjoy books where both the men and women aren't typecast into one type of behavior, and it's good to see real-life struggles and how the characters deal with them as they grow older and/or fall in love. In addition, Colt digs into how racism affects their love and lives and also how it is entrenched in the MC life. Sometimes, Dixie Rose's struggle when she was a kid living inside (but really outside) the MC was tough to read about, but that helped to show how strong she really was.
I recommend giving this series a try. There's quite a variety of stories in it, so if you can't get into one, the next one might just be your gem. I bought all of these separately but then also got the boxed set of the first five books - you know how it is when your Kindle starts to get overloaded, right? I deleted the separate books and read the box set - if it's still available, it's really a good bargain for five solid MC books.
I have read most of this author’s work, but For the Love of Dixie is one book that will forever be engraved in my memory. This book is a very emotional and controversial read. I love the fact that this author was not afraid to touch on a sensitive real area of life. Not everything is a fairy tale. For the Love of Dixie deals with the ugliness of racism and the hatred that comes along with it. When I started reading this book I was not prepared for just how much this book would affect me and I loved every second of it. This is Dixie and Echo’s story and let me say this, I could not get enough of it.
Dixie Dunn is the daughter of one of the members of the Kings of Chaos MC. She was bought up around the club and instead of being treated like family they did not protect her or take care of her like they should have. Dixie is mixed and because of that she was treated horribly and no one intervened on this young girl’s behalf. The emotional damage she suffered broke my heart. Instead of feeling loved she felt unworthy, unwanted and had poor self-esteem. The only saving grace was the love from Echo. Together Echo and Dixie find a love that was beautiful and clean. That all changes when Echo breaks Dixie’s heart, and she leaves the only home she knows. Dixie’s character was one that I fell in love with immediately. Years later, Dixie returns home after her father becomes ill and Echo is not willing to make the same mistake.
Echo loved Dixie with all his heart. She was the most beautiful woman in the world to him. After his father threatened Dixie and to take away his patch, Echo felt like he had no choice but to break her heart. Over the years, Echo has always regretted his decision and now whenever the opportunity presents itself he makes sure to let her know she’s been claimed.
Echo has grown up over the years, no longer willing to let his father bigoted ways keep them apart. The only thing standing in his way is Dixie’s anger and Echo is going to make sure she knows that this time it is for life. I loved how Echo was willing to sacrifice is soul to make a change and to be with the woman he has always loved.
The character development and story line was incredibly written, the strong topic matter did not over shadow the epic love story between Echo and Dixie. I really loved this story and could not put his book down.
When it comes to his woman Echo doesn't do anything half a**, “with me. Non-negotiable. You can pick a place you like and I’ll pay the rent, but I’m not doing this part time ***t. When I get to be home, I want it to be with my woman at my side.” I loved the more relaxed Echo, “there’s a lot I’d like to show you right now, but I’ll keep myself in check. If anyone here even sees a part of your a**, I’d be ready to kill them.” She bites her lower lip. “You like it when I go alpha, don’t you?” I love this series I always love Shyla's books.
This was a stunning book I couldn't put it down I literally had to force myself to put it down at two in the morning it was so good. This highlited a world that shouldn't exist blacks v whites hit a few nerves it shouldn't be like this and I'm glad the book fixed the wrongs just wish it was this way in real life
This is my second book by Shyla Colt, and the more I read her, the more I fall in love with her writing! I LOVED this story!
Dixie Dunn hasn't had the easiest time growing up. Being the daughter of a member of the Kings of Chaos and of mixed race leaves her open to a lot of people messing with her. On top of that, she gets her heart broken by Echo so she leaves and makes a life for herself away from the hurt. She has to return after her father has a heart attack, and comes face to face with Echo again. Joel "Echo" Spencer knows that Dixie hates him, but he's never stopped loving her. He was forced by his father to abandon her, so he knows he has his work cut out for him. The biggest thing on his side, is she still wants him, so he intends on making her his again, and heaven help anyone who gets in his way, including her.
Echo makes my heart beat faster, as I fell in love with him. The character development is fantastic, and it's impossible not to fall in love with these biker alphas. Storyline is well written, exciting, and flows smoothly. Shyla Colt does a fantastic job hooking me from the beginning, while keeping my heart racing the entire story. Their chemistry is flammable, making EXPLOSIVELY hot flash worthy sexy scenes. I'm totally addicted to these bikers, and can't wait for the next book!
For the Love of Dixie is a Romeo and Juliet story with a happy ending, although in this story the opposition is only coming from Echo's father who dislikes black people with a passion. Dixie Rose comes home to the Kings of Chaos MC, when her father has a heart attack. She is thrown back in the world that she left behind when makes a choice to be there for her father. Her best friend Blue remind her that she will have to face her past and soon because Echo will come for her. What Dixie doesn't know is why Echo abandon her in the first place. Echo is determined to get Dixie back as his o'lady and make her his wife. Things happen coming from Echo's father that threaten not only Dixie but the club as well.
There is only one part in this book that I disagree with when Echo has the thought "I'm part black. No wonder I was so into D'Rose." The heart wants what the heart wants. It has nothing to do being part anything. Another good read by Ms. Shyla Colt.
Dixie made a new life for herself after no one in her life stood for her. This hurt my heart for her more than anything. Not even her father or the man who loved her did that. She comes back when her father has a heart attack and is faced with all that she left behind including Echo. He has a story to tell about why he walked away which still made me want to kick him at least once. Dixie has suffered such a nightmare at the hand of his father and it began way before they were together. I wanted to kick him more. I loved Dixie as she so strong and sassy. I also loved her with Echo who is her soulmate.
I must say I enjoyed this KOC novel much better than Walk The Line. The ❤ breaks for the little girl lost and what hate broke inside of her. It took some doing but D'Rose clawed her way back and her transformation is inspiring. As is the growth & determination of Echo. I'm still on the fence about Charm..do hope he can shake ths shackles imposed by his ignorant Dad. It's an amazing informative look into this world...traditions, hierarchies, structure....A world I know I couldn't be a part of but I love the "look-see" regardless.😏 Enjoy the ride....
I Liked this story! It was a 3 and a half stars for me. I enjoyed the love that Echo and Dixie shared it was so sweet the way he loved her. I liked the little drama thrown in I feel like it would have been helpful to read the first two books in the series but I stilled enjoyed the story. My one question would be why Dixie chose to call Echo to help her at that party. The love scene were hot and just a good love story.
I just have to say that each book in the series gets better! It’s so hard to to say who’s my favorite couple from KOC, but Echo and Dixie Rose May be the best yet! I love how all their stories are weaved together. Definitely recommend reading it. It’s a fast read jam packed with every emotion! I’ve been reading this series while I wait for kids at practice and the parent pick up line! KOC series has made my week!
I'm a BW and also not a liberal. My perspective and interests are likely not yours. If you like a BWWM romance/sex fantasy with an aggressive WM LI this a good one.
It was hot asf. Lots of really good sex scenes. I'm here for her BWWM stories and only her BWWM stories. I liked that Echo/Joel was dominant in the bedroom. That was perfect. I liked the whole claiming her as his own that was also hot.
Echo and Dixie are young and in love. Forces in their MC pull them apart. Years later, Dixie returns to care for her dad and Echo is still part of the MC. Echo's been waiting to make things right, and claim Dixie as his own. The two stand strong together to battle the forces still trying to pull them and their MC apart.
Another great MC read. I really wish there was an epilogue for this story, though I understand it being a part of a series. Really great that Echo and D'rose were able not only make their way back to each other but also defeat his dad.
Filled with love forgiveness, redemption, betrayal, and much more
Dixie finally comes home to her dad and the MC but because of her past issues with a few members, she's leary. Echo still pines for Dixie Rose and he's determined to make her his.
love enjoy Shyla's MC books . This book was no exception. It touched on deep issues and didn't sugarcoat the racism mixed couples face. Hope to see more of this couple.
It's so refreshing to see such support for a minority in a powerful book like this. It truly opens your eyes to the degradation to black people, and the way narrow minded people can break a childs spirit. 5 stars!!!
This is a great story that has its highs and lows. You will grow to love Dixie Rose and Echo as much as I do. True love never fails and good always prevails over evil.
Another great read by author Shyla Colt, this book touches on some sensitive subject, and I like that. These two have finally gotten their happy ending,.
