I liked the first part of this but thought that the second part (the interviews) were pretty boring. The first part of this book is perfect for a young adult but a little bit remedial for actual entrepreneurs.
This short book gives easy-to-follow rules for any entrepreneur to be successful. They are given in the form of a story.
Ty Chandler is your average high school student heading into his senior year. The usual summer jobs are taken. One day, he runs into the adult newspaper carrier for the local newspaper. The route is about to become available, and Ty asks if he can have it. He is now a paperboy; with less than a dozen customers in a 200-unit subdivision, there is plenty of room for growth.
From the beginning, Ty does things the right way. He invests in a supply of bright red newspaper bags, and resolves to place every copy, every day, right on the front porch, and not just somewhere in front of the house. Extra copies of the paper, along with an inexpensive greeting card, and a passport-sized photo of Ty, are dropped off, free of charge, at the homes of his "not yet customers" (not "non-customers").
Ty thinks nothing of going the extra mile. He notices that one woman has a couple of empty cough medicine boxes in her recycling bin. He goes to the local drug store, buys a couple of cans of chicken noodle soup, and delivers them, free of charge. Another elderly neighbor asks if he can clean out her gutters, or rake her front yard and bag the leaves.
His new after school lawn and garden business takes off, due to word of mouth advertising. He invests in a decent lawn mower, and a mini-trailer that can be attached to his bike. His morning paper route is also growing, along with school, and his customers expecting extra-special treatment. Can Ty keep this up until he goes off to college?
This book is short, and very easy to understand. If there is such a thing as a dying profession in America, "paperboy" is probably it. Any entrepreneur of any kind who can not find just one job aid in this book has a real problem. This is very much recommended, for everyone.
A Paperboy’s Fable feels both contemporary and timeless at the same time. With sound principles that set entrepreneurs up for success, there are many benefits to reading this book. We are taught these key principles through different interactions a paperboy has with different people, decisions he must make, recognitions he must discover and objections he must overcome. Not only did this young author craft a practical manual he also builds on a greater narrative of self perseverance and morally sound judgement. If you’re new to an industry or to the work force or perhaps you want to start a business yourself, I highly recommend you read this inspirational and informative book. It will help you identify opportunity, weather adversity and keep yourself competitive. With quotes from business leader sprinkled in to back up each chapter's claim, you get a real sense of authenticity and real world value to each principle. Also, there are interviews with leaders from different industries that talk about their success and how they operate in various situations and circumstances. Excellently written, formatted and thought out book.
I have read many books of this genre with advice and tips for becoming a successful entrepreneur; however, I have to say this one was an absolute joy to read. It was an inspiring and easy read. The story of Ty is engaging and the steps he took — from accepting a simple job as a paperboy to turning it into a thriving business — was encouraging. I learned a lot from it and enjoyed the character depth of Ty and seeing him in action. By following the ideas and steps of Ty, I definitely feel more empowered and inspired in making my own dreams come true.
This is one of the best books I have read and is one that will definitely stay in my mind. It is very well written and so interesting that it kept me turning pages. I love the author’s writing style and would love to see more. Deep Patel is truly gifted and a brilliant young writer. I highly recommend this to everyone; the key to success is at your fingertips.
This book is like nothing I have read before. Entrepreneurship has always interested me, so I’ve attended multiple seminars on the matter. But, I have to be honest and admit that none of the books I've read came close to this one. What makes it so special is the actual story - it's written so simply, yet so catchy. Deep Patel managed to write a “how to” kind of book in a unique, fun and pleasant manner! I'm sure there are many skeptics that don't believe that one's experience can help them improve their business, but this book is exactly what the title says: a fable. The author is using his main character, Ty Chandler, to explain and illustrate the 11 Principles of Success. The writing is great, the storyline is vivid and the advice is relevant. It was a useful, pleasurable read and I am glad I came across this book.
Definitely recommend it! Relevant advice and unique story.
A Paperboy’s Fable has a unique perspective on success. The book encompasses the 11 Principles of Success. I have to be honest: I am exhausted by the many books on success that are on the market, and begrudgingly started A Paperboy’s Fable. But two pages in - I was completely hooked! What an amazing story of success and the fact that the “fable” is based on the author’s own family history makes the book even more enjoyable. This is the first “secret to success” book I actually couldn’t put down. The book also features – what I found to be captivating, as well – interviews with business executives (such as the co-founder of Vine, CNET, etc.), distinguished professors (from Stanford, Harvard, etc.) and General Petraeus.
I highly recommend A Paperboy’s Fable by Deep Patel!
I used to love reading Aesop's fables. So seeing a similar genre in full book form struck a chord. The author has updated this genre — to today's world — making it more relevant. Yet, the moral of the story is still the premise. Thus, the book is a hybrid of a self-help business book with a fictional but authentic storyline. It encompasses the eleven principles of success. For example, the sixth principles, "Raving Fans," reminded me of another book focused on customer service. is ideally suited for anyone starting their own business or having aspirations to do so.
