Bitterroot: Part 3

Rate this book
Regan and Charlie Vuk are finally forced to compete for the position of werewolf pack alpha. The winner gets to lead and she also gets Owen Rossi, the vampire prince’s hand in marriage—whether she wants it or not. But only one sister already has his heart.

If Regan wins, will she be able to let go of her feelings for Carter and put duty before desire? Will Charlie be able to survive long enough to get a fair shot at the competition and at Owen?

Before it’s over, both girls will have to compete for more than just the role of alpha. Someone has a grudge and they’ll do anything to exact vengeance on the guilty. Including removing one of the Vuk sisters from the equation.

Subtle threats escalate to attempted murder. One sister’s life hangs in the balance. The other must do whatever it takes in order to save her pack—and her sibling—including making the enemy her ally.

Will the vampires and werewolves finally forge peace—or will sibling rivalry prove fatal for them all?

INITIAL THOUGHTS
I was looking forward to reading this part of Bitterroot, and expecting to have most if not all my questions answered about both the werewolf pack and the vampire coven.

MY REVIEW
As with parts 1 & 2, I received part 3 free from the author Heather Hildenbrand, as I am part of her Heather's Hotshots Street Team in exchange for my honest opinion/review.
The cover is the same cover as for parts 1 and 2 so here's what I said about the cover when I first saw it as the part 1 cover. . . .The cover is a rich evening blue colour, and features a moonlit background. In front of the moon are two females, both wearing white dresses, whose joined hands are holding a beautiful bouquet of deep red roses. The female on the left (as you look at the book) is blonde, and her dress has straps on it. The female on the right is dark haired and her white dress is strapless. The title of the book is in a cursive font, that catches by eye.
After reading the book I'd say that the two females on the front cover are very good likenesses of the females described in the book, in fact the cover image could be an actual scene from the book, and fits really well within the plot of the book.
So would this cover make me pick it up from a book store shelf? Hmm that's difficult as the cover doesn't scream "this is a shifter book" but being a "nosey reader" I'd want to know who the two females were, and whether their characters are as "chalk & cheese" as their looks appear to be. So I think I can say yes, the cover would interest me enough to pick it up and read the blurb. I would like to add that personally I would have preferred different covers for the novella's but, maybe the reason there is just one cover is that the novella's are going to be combined into one so only need one cover. I guess only time will tell.
I'm not sure if I have actually mentioned this before but I should probably point out that Bitterroot is told to the reader by the two main female characters in the book, Regan and Charlie The individual points of view and the character traits of each sister come through well in their individual chapters. Part 3 begins with a chapter from Regan where she is dreaming about being in her wolf form running freely with her mother Myra (who is alive once again in the dream)with no pack rules, no pack politics or problems just her and her mother. Regan then moves and falls out of her bed waking to find a vampire sitting on her window ledge. The mysterious vampire is the one who has been stalking her and her new found sister Charlie. The vampire enlightens Regan to the fact she needs to look within her friends and her pack for the people that wish to cause harm. He goes on to reveal that he was a close friend of her mother's which Regan naturally doubts but the strange vampire continues with his revelations claiming the Myra was not killed by a vampire then he leaves her with the new information.
The next chapter is from Charlie's point of view who is also just stirring from her sleep already feeling a strong sense of dread for what the day holds.
The contest ends up consisting of three parts (great play on the number three! as in three tests and three novella's, not sure if this was intentional or not). I won't elaborate on what actually occurs within the individual tests, or divulge who win's which test either. The individual trials are 1, The Test Of Strength, 2,The Test of Knowledge and 3, The Test Of Endurance.
So the first test is the "Test of Strength" first up is Regan Vuk, daughter of Myra, she has the support of the majority of the pack, so she draws encouragement from the crowd. Whereas Charlie (Charlotte) Vuk, daughter of Anita pulls support from Owen Rossi, Vampire Prince.
There is an awful incident and the Vuk sisters, their father and elders of the pack end up moving to the Rossi household and carrying out The Knowledge Test there.
After the first two trials have been carried out the girls are tied having won one test each.
There's a lot happening in this book as there are the trials/tests, there's the awful incident that occurs immediately after the Test of Strength, as well as the sisters attempting to find out the identity of the mystery vampire who seems to be following them.
When the second trial/test is organised to take place at the Rossi household Regan takes the opportunity to continue her investigation into who may have murdered her mother too. She begins the snooping with just Carter as back up but circumstances change her plans and Charlie and Owen end up helping too.
The different setting visited in this book in Rossi territory gives Charlie more opportunities to be with Owen and they have some fairly serious deep conversations like the one about Owen's mother. Owen's mother hates the fact that she has been given eternal life, and that her greatest, dearest wish is to have grandchildren.
I could seriously go on and on about this novella, but I really do not want slip and say anything "spoilerish", questions are answered throughout the book and the enjoyment would be ruined if I tell you too much.
This book is faster paced than the other two novella's, at times I felt I wanted to slow things down a little and parts could perhaps have been better with a little more detailed explanations. Bitterroot pt 3 is certainly action packed, and has the pack loyalty, one of the things I love about the shifter genre and the various mysteries and questions from the other novella's are slowly revealed and answered. Betrayal also features heavily in this novella, with a pack member not "giving there all" to help Charlie during one of the trials. Betrayal is also at the very basic bottom of Myra's murder as well as being a strong reason behind the "incident" that occurs after the first trial too.
To sum up I did really enjoy the novella, but I thought it could also have been so much more. I think that certain parts needed more time spent on them, they could have been fleshed out a little, such as the whole action of Myra's murder. I also wanted more detail about the incident after the first trial and how it had taken place. I was disappointed when the culprit was revealed, I felt I hadn't known the character enough to believe they were capable of the incident. I suppose what I am trying to say is that for me certain sections of this novella felt rushed. I felt a little cheated with the whole wedding preparations and it scene within the book too.
So did I enjoy the novella? I read this novella with a passion! I quite literally inhaled it! I'm so greedy I wanted more. I wanted novella three to last longer than it did. Would I recommend the novella? Yes, of course if you have read pt1 & pt2 then this novella is unmissable! Would I recommend the three novella's as a whole? As I have said I was totally addicted and adored Bitterroot from beginning to end. I would have spread novella 3 out more maybe over two novella's rather than just the one. Would I want to read more in this series? I am still curious enough that I'd like more from these characters, so yes. I didn't have the sense of completion at the end of this novella. I would also wish to re-visit the characters, the werewolf pack and the vampire coven, maybe have them united against a threat against both races. I'd also enjoy reading a catch up on the romances within the novella's too. Would I read more by Heather Hildenbrand? I already have begun reading more by Heather. I have read Imitation which is Bk1 in her Clone Chronicles Series. I have also recently purchased her Dirty Blood Series Box Set too.
Would I read more by S.M. Reine? I am yet to read other titles by S.M. Reine, I do have some on my To Read List and have some on my kindle to read as soon as I get the time!
Is there anything else I'd like to add? I would be interested in learning more about the creative process of two authors writing the one novella series etc. Maybe when they have time I can ask Heather Hildenbrand and S.M. Reine to take part in one of my Book Specific Author Interviews. . .

FINAL THOUGHTS
So the events around the wedding were not what I expected at all. I wanted even more from the epilogue. Maybe we could revisit the Vuk\Rossi families a few years down the line?
I think there is a lot more potential remaining in these characters and the setting of this book. There are so many more possibilities to be had from the werewolf pack and vampire coven, and we haven't even meet any humans as yet! All the history, heritage, the possibilities could be endless!

~~I received this in exchange for my honest opinion~~

OK, If you have been reading any of my other reviews, you know that I haven't been able to get this book out of my head. Well, this is the last part in the series, and let me tell you- these two authors have done an excellent job with the ending. Not only were all my questions answered, but they wrapped it up and served it to us with a nice, big red ribbon.

There is the action that you want, some blood, questions answered, and something that I was not a fan of, but it had to be done. Charlie and Regan are entering the battle between one another to see who is going to become alpha. We all know that Regan really wants it, Charlie isn't sure what she wants-still. But when these two are forced to work together, many wonderful things happen.

I can't say enough about this book. Such an awesome twist on vampires and werewolves. These two authors have made an amazing story and a fantastic book. I can't wait to read it over and over.

Bitterroot Part 3 by Heather Hildenbrand & S. M. Reine Regan and Charlie continue in the competition to become the next pack Alpha. Heather Hildenbrand and S. M. Reine created an exhilarating conclusion to the Bitterroot Series!

Both Regan and Charlie are likable and well developed characters. Considering they are sisters, they are very different individuals. I have to say, I loved when Charlie went off on Regan. She really did deserve it, and I was not quite sure Charlie had it in her.

I also really like both Owen and Carter. They are both great guys whom we discover more about in this sequence. Not to mention they are both swoon-worthy.

I love that the story is told from both Regan’s and Charlie’s point of view. It gives the reader great insight into both characters and makes them both appealing.

The plot was well constructed and full of mystery and unexpected twist. Everything fell into place smoothly. I did not see a few things coming and really enjoyed the outcome. Heather Hildenbrand and S. M. Reine make a fabulous writing duo. I would not mind seeing another collaboration from them in the future.

I really loved the first two books in this novella trilogy. The wait for the last book was torture! When I got a copy, I was practically jumping up and down!
The way the story unraveled and how it ended was better than I thought it could be! There was so much conflict between the sisters and getting to know both of their POV's made it harder to decide what should happen.
The girls became a lot more developed in this installment. There were more decisive actions and interactions between Charlie and Regan.
Then, there are the guys! Carter and Owen!! Yum! Both guys are great!
The competition finally happens and there were quite a few unexpected twists throughout. When everything was finally revealed, there were answers to questions I didn't even think to ask.
The whole story, all three installments, made up an awesome book that is absolutely a YA must read. Five glittery stars!

Great sisters and love series!
Secrets, lies and betrayal come to light! Regan and Charley’s time is up and is finally D day. The competition starts now. Its bitter sweet. Charley is the underdog but no wimp. Regan has the upper hand, she’s been training all her life for this. Charley and Owen finally confess their feelings and act on it. Regan also realizes she loves carter but still is stubborn and continues to fight for the Alpha role at all cost even if she needs to wed Owen and then kill him. She has it in her mind that Vampires killed her mother. But oh boy was she wrong. Everything comes to crashing down when a single vampire causes doubt to Regan with some facts and information on her mom’s death. Regan gets Charley, Carter and even Owen to help find out the truth but until then, she will fight vampires. Things get complicated when Charley’s life gets threaten! Awesome novella! I love the chemistry between Charley and Owen. I loved how everything turns out! The sisters finally get to be real sisters and And end the competition. #teamSisters&TrueLove

This was a wonderful conclusion to a great novella trilogy! I love that this book picked up right where the previous one left off. This last installment features the big competition for alpha. In my review for Bitterroot: Part 2, I got mad at the book for Regan saying that Charlie's hair was blonde when it was said in Bitterroot: Part 1 that she had brown hair. In this book it's mentioned that Charlie has brown hair, so my guess is that it was a typo in Bitterroot Part 2. Which makes me sad because I loved this series, but my one gripe with it was all the grammatical errors that I found. I did like how everything was neatly tied up in the end and both girls had me rooting for them. This series has a unique take on werewolves and vampires, so I recommend that you check it out!

Bitter Truth is a wonderful conclusion to a great novella trilogy! I love that this book picked up right where the previous one left off. This last installment features the big competition for alpha. In my review for Bitter Beloved, I got mad at the book for Regan saying that Charlie's hair was blonde when it was said in Bitter Rivalry that she had brown hair. In this book it's mentioned that Charlie has brown hair, so my guess is that it was a typo in Bitter Beloved. This is a fantastic story that kept me reading until 2 in the morning. I read book one separately part of the author’s re-branding, but then I had to purchase the 3 book set, because I couldn’t put it down. This is a Y/A -3 book series, but as an adult, I loved it. There is a ton of suspense & mystery, even a murder in the plot, but there’s also some predictable parts & romance, that rounded out the whole story. The characters are all so different & none are as they appear to be. Most are likable (the main characters), some not so much. The best part, the HEA at he end. Highly recommend this series!

Loved this book just as much as the other two!!! It was filled with surprising twists and lots of warm fuzzies. These two sisters are most definitely different but do share some of the same qualities. The dual point of view really made this series what it is. It's both sweet and intriguing and gifted us with a book boyfriend or two 😘 I'm absolutely pleased with how this concluded but sad that this adventure is over. There is some more mushy scenes to be written. One can hope that one day we'll see them in print!! I love the covers which are stunning 💖💖💖 Ms. Hildenbrand writes amazing werewolf series, and this one totally has my heart!

Just the ending I would have chosen

This was a fun, quick series, with Alpha Chosen being my favorite. The battle we heard about since Charlie came to Paradise is finally set into motion and so is the danger that has been plaguing the pack for the past year. As secrets are revealed the story takes unexpected turns leading up to a satisfying conclusion.

I’m glad there was a HEA! But I still don’t care for many of the characters, basically only Charlie, Owen and Cater. I still don’t like Regan at all. Plus I’m not crazy about how her name was spelled Reagan in the first two books and Regan in the third. That’s only one of the many inconsistencies. I love Heather Hildenbrand’s work, this just wasn’t one of my favorites.

Although somewhat cheesy and cliche in its vampire werewolf love triangle of sorts, this book was clean perfect and good enough that even though ridiculous I bought the next two in the series. And I next to never buy books and I am so over series books.

*** Gifted in exchange for an honest review ***

The last book in the series where the two Alpha Sisters compete to lead the Pack, Which Regan is all for, unfortunately it also entails marrying the Prince of the Vampires Owen, to seal a peace treaty between the Werewolves and the Vampires, but for Charlie, its not such a hideous thought, in fact she'd be quite happy with being his intended.

As each sister keeps their intentions close to their breasts, they grow distant to each other as they train for the 3 stages of the contest set for them.

Strength, Knowledge and Endurance are what they are tested on, and of course Regan is confident that she will win them all, she thinks she should 'take one for the pack' to save her sister from the aberrant fate of being betrothed to Owen - ha how I chuckled at her somewhat misguided honor and sacrifice.

When an attempt on Charlies life during one of the trials happens the competition is moved to the Vampire compound, and when this happens Regan finds out a few truths, about her mother and her death...

The mystery deepens to what is actually happening in the undercurrents of the contest and the intended marriage treaty. When Regan stumbles across Charlie with Owen and they finally come clean on what they feel for each other the two sisters join forces with Owen and Carter to try and figure out the circumstances of Regan's mothers death.

This book is fast paced and the trials were interesting in both their set up and the way the two sisters dealt with them.

There is quite a twist in the story when we finally get to the bottom of the murder, and I was happy to see a HEA for both the sisters.

In some ways it ended to quickly for me, but I guess that was because it just pulled me in and I didn't stop reading till I got to the end.

I would recommend this series to Paranormal Romance lovers, its a unique twist to the Pack hierarchy and I love reading something that gives you something different.

Would I want to know more about this world of Shifters and Vampires and their treaty... Hell yeah!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This final installment somehow managed to tie up all the loose ends and leave me with a happy smile on my face. With all the issues still floating around at the end of the previous book, it was nothing short of miraculous.

Regan’s world is changing. Her best friend might have more than friendly feelings towards her. Her pack mates might not all be telling her the absolute truth. She might have to marry a vampire just so she can become alpha. Going through all of this and being tasked with fighting your newly returned sister is not an ideal time in the life of any young girl, let alone one who is near the breaking point.

Charlie is finally starting to stand on her own and get some much needed confidence. All of this quickly heads out the window when – surprise – the test for alpha has begun. All she wants is to live her HEA with her vampire prince – is that so much to ask? Unfortunately, werewolf politics and drama are putting a halt to any such happiness. We all knew the battle for alpha would have to start sometime, but it seems so quick!

Worried about a cliffhanger or depressing ending? Don’t be – you get everything neatly tied up and these girls had me rooting for not one but both of them at the end. Who knew I could learn to sort-of like Regan? This was a great conclusion to what has been an interesting ride.

It isn't everyday you come across an author duo that makes a book work smoothly. Heather Hildenbrand and SM Reine are two amazing authors whom I enjoyed reading individually, however with Bitterroot, their combined talents created a mesmerizing tale where one could swoon over love interests, identify with female heroines, and fear for the lives of every character involved. Needless to say, they're both incredible together and the proof is in the combined series of Bitterroot.

"His face hardened again, the same way it had when he’d said that he loved my mother. Not angry, just protecting himself from the pain. I hated that he could do that and I couldn’t. "

As not to divulge the events of Bitterroot Part 3, I'll keep it sweet and simple - Bitterroot Part 3 was fantastic and completely unexpected! Char, Regan, and Owen were a trio I instantly fell for in part one and were characters I easily became invested in. The growth of these characters and the complex circumstances they found themselves, was a breath of fresh air in the genre of young adult paranormal lit. Although I'm sad to see this series ending, it was an absolute pleasure to step into their world, to see two fierce and respectable heroines take center stage, and to see the werewolf hierarchy tackled from a different angle.

Well written, mesmerizing, and addicting - Bitterroot by Heather Hildenbrand and SM Reine is a title all readers must read.

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I enjoyed this book and thought it was a great ending to the series. Charlie and Regan struggle with their relationship which isn’t helped that they’re in competition with each other to see who’ll become the next pack alpha. The pack really doesn’t like Charlie and one of them even makes her lose one of the challenges as it was only two wolves against three since he didn’t help at all so Regan won. Charlie and Owen finally confess their feelings for each other and act on it. Regan also realizes she’s actually in love with her best friend Carter but still continues to fight for the alpha position even knowing that she’ll have to marry Owen and then k*ll him as she believes that vampires m*rdered her mum. Regan finally finds out the truth about what actually happened with her mum’s death. During the competition Charlie is poisoned with Bitteroot flower, that’s lethal to werewolves and there’s no known cure or is there? I loved the chemistry between Charlie and Owen and Regan and Carter aren’t so bad themselves. There were a lot of twists and turns to get to the ending but well worth it. I wish the ending was a bit more. I’d definitely recommend this book, series and both authors to everyone.
