I read this text for a class I took through Learner's Edge an online self paced program for teachers to help receive some of my designated CEU's for my next licensure. In teaching junior high (7/8th graders), I found this topic to be one of necessity. I see countless students struggle with content-at times simply because they don't want to or know how to learn, study, or self-help when problems arise. As an educator I want to help my students reach success beyond the classroom into the real world and found this text to provide some insight into how to do it. It was rather dry but packed in some good resources and organizers to use in the classroom.
One area the book could definitely improve is providing more concrete examples for the strategies. For example provide what the strategies would look like for a second grade classroom or a 6-8th grade classroom instead of just describing the strategies. I found the strategies to be relevant but was left uncertain of how to specifically apply them to my content area in addition to the Common Core Curriculum the state of Ohio expects me to cover in a school year.
I appreciated all of the strategies for supporting students in becoming more self-regulated. It filled a hole in my learning about becoming self-directed learners. This book also pulls together ideas from mindset, grit, mindfulness, relaxation, reflection, and all these SE ideas we are supposed to use in school. Cash loves matrices and some of the ones in this book made me wish for a wormhole to traverse their 4th dimensions.
