Deep in the Scottish Highlands stood a well, left behind by the Northmen who had built a longhouse upon the site. The longhouse eventually crumbled, the Norse died off, but the well remained. The well was built in the trees, high above the land, and built in dark gray stone that is native to the area. Upon the stones of the well were carved these your journey be quiet and your days of joy long. May your deeds remain strong for Odin. May your love stay true to your noble heart. This well, so alone upon the hill, soon became the stuff of legends, It was said that a young Northman fell in love with a local Taevali maiden. Her parents forbid her to see him so, in desperation, she stole away on a cold December night with the intention of marrying her Norse lover in secret. They were followed by her parents but rather than be separated, the desperate lovers ran to the longhouse and hid in the well. There was a terrible storm that night and the run off from the mountains that kept the well supplied with water soon overflowed, dooming the lovers on what would be the Christian holiday of Christmas. Now, their spirits wander the trees where the well is, where they met their deaths, together in spirit as they could not be together in life. It is said that if lovers make a wish upon the well during this holiday time, the spirit of the young Northman and his lovely maiden will grant the lovers one wish for their marital happiness, one wish that will bind them together for eternity.THE LEGEND OF THE SPIRIT WATERS by Kathryn Le Veque - The legend begins with a Norseman and his native lover.THE HANDFASTING by Glynnis A French knight betrothed to a Highland heiress falls in love with his spirited bride, until he realizes he's been tricked into wedding the wrong sister.THE THIEF'S DAUGHTER by Suzan Onnleigh, betrayed and abandoned, makes one simple a better life for her child. Will fate intervene and make those wishes come true?THE WOLF OF SKYE by Hildie Fate's wicked sense of humor strikes Highland guard Faolan Mackinnon when he ends up betrothed to Catriona Grant, a fiery lass, who he met only minutes earlier. Juggernaut Indie author Kathryn Le Veque is a 'tour de force' in publishing.
Kathryn is a critically acclaimed 21-time USA TODAY Bestselling author, a charter Amazon All-Star author, an Indie Reader top seller, and a #1 bestselling, award-winning, multi-published author in Medieval Historical Romance with over 100 published novels.
Among her many accomplishments, she is the CEO of Dragonblade Publishing, the #1 Historical Romance e-book publisher on Amazon. In 2020, Kathryn collaborated with Sourcebooks publishing for a Medieval Fight Club series set in Scotland.
I do have to say that: I do struggle when reading Kathryn Le Veque's stories. Though, I don't know why cause I do love medieval stories, especially medieval Scottish warriors stories.
But then The Handfasting by Glynnis Campbell was a 5 STARS story, loved it! Loved how the newlyweds fooled the rest of the clan and saved the real heir. Must also had the LOL moment when seeing the future husband of the bitchy sister.
Wish Upon a Winter Soltice by Emma Prince: This one was a 3.5 STARS. Though it was a good story I found it a bit dragging. And it was told in a much to modern way.
And then The Thief's Daughter by Suzan Tisdale was also a 5 STARS story, loved that one, too! Onnleigh's story is a real grab and hold one (once you start you can not put it down). Tou will laugh and surely cry but it is worth it. Loved how Connor takes her baby girl in and then keeps the mother, too. How he defends her and can read her and her thoughts. Love reading her books cause you are there in time with the characters as they talk the old talk.
The Wolf of Skye by Hildie McQueen: A sweet easy read. This one had a vanishing well it would appear and disappear at will. This one was a 4 STARS . It was ok but written to modern for the era.
A legend and 4 novellas. Kathryn LeVeque gives us a tragic love story as a legend that the 4 novellas use as a central theme, a wishing well for lovers.
The Handfasting is a case of mistaken identity, sibling rivalry and loyalty, and bad parenting with an HEA.
Wish upon a Winter Solstice is a beauty and a beast tale within rival clans.
The Thief's Daughter is a Cinderella tale with the thief's daughter and the new clan chief.
The Wolfe of Skye is a Taming of the Shrew tale with a fiery redhead and a man who thinks he already knows love.
After reading contemporary and Western historical, it was delightful to return to this set of novellas with a Yuletide Scottish Highland setting. Happy holiday reading.
Anthologies are always great: they are where I meet new authors. Plus, the stories are often related, as are the the stories in this set. The stories move from early to quite a bit later, from reality to mythology. The other joy of anthologies is the way the different authors approach the same or related tropes, as in this set. This is a gorgeous set of works.
OMG!!!! Another great read. I love how the stories ran smoothly and kept the story around the wishing well, Christmas and LOVE!!! I was crying, laughing throughout the book. Thank you ladies for this wonderful Christmas book!!! I promise you go out and get this book and you won't regret it. I am in withdrawal now I want more!!!!
The stories are all centered around a magical Wishingwell that grants wishes for only true love .The first story was very sad and I felt it was unfair . It sets up the rest of the book and explains why the well is magical. Each of the authors did an excellent job with their individual stories .I really enjoyed each one of these heartfelt Christmas tales !
One thing all of these stories had in common was that holidays are a part of the cloth, of the culture woven together. A quick read and sweet parts to add to the romance of each. Several good authors together make it hard to turn down. Great price and great read.
Totally enjoyed the holiday stories. All 4 authors are great writers in there own right and now combing there efforts, with keeping the wishing well in all 4 stories, made this set of books an amazing read. Loved it.
As short-stories they were ok. But you get into the story and trying get what they are doing everything and where was not much action to read, except for the last story which was not so bad
This set of books are simply one of the best I've read in a long time. I read them over the holidays and they were too good to put Dow. I highly recommend this set of a fabulous read.
I enjoyed all 5 novellas greatly. They were tied together with one thing. The rest of the stories were basically on their own, making the book so enjoyable. This is most definately a must read for all romance readers. Especially if you enjoy reading stories set in the Highlands of Scotland.
Excellent collection of brilliant writers! I loved every story! The characters are larger than life, and the action, adventure, and romance were well balanced.
I must say even though the first story is sad as hell and all the other ones revolve around it it was a great read. I enjoyed a couple more stories in it more than others but all in all a great read
