Very interesting that Chauncey Yellow Robe (original Native American name: Canowicakte) was taken from his Sioux tribe and given to Generl R. H. Pratt who took him to Carlisle, PA and had him go to school. Also went to Moody Institute in the summers (Bible school). He worked in government service most of his life helping at various Indian Schools most of the time at Rapid City, SD. I grew up near that town in Lead, SD (and some of the time in Wyoming). He helped the Native Americans gain an education and better jobs. He told these tales to one of his 3 daughters: Rosebud Yellow Tale and she wrote them down in this book. The illustrations by Jerry Pinkney are beautiful. Glad to own an older copy of this book.
The book includes introductory material about the author's parents and grandparents. The tales included have multiple levels of meaning, making them appropriate for the middle level reader and adults. There is a sense of "vitality" in the tales.
