Text-to-Teaching Connection

"St. Patrick's Day" by Brenda Haugen does a great job of offering a quick introduction as to the history of the holiday. The author not only explains what the holiday is and why we wear green, but also explains how St. Patrick used the clover to spread Christianity in Ireland. I feel that this book would be an excellent teaching tool for students in early elementary grades. The reading is basic and easy to follow, and it is filled with excellent illustrations that will help keep the students interested. This book could be used in the days leading up to St. Patrick's Day during morning meeting or shared reading time and get them excited for other activities that are planned for that day. I have found that most children do not understand the point of the holiday pass the wearing green and the pinching. By using this book, the younger children could hopefully make a better connection with the day and why it is celebrated here in this country.

I read this to my granddaughter (5 yo) since St. Patrick’s Day is approaching us. I think this series ( Holidays and Celebrations) gives just enough information for her age group. It is interesting and includes fun facts throughout the story as well as in the back of the book, a glossary, and a fun craft idea. There is also an index and a helpful guide suggesting books and safe websites if your child is interested in learning more.
