The (Incomplete) Book of Failures: The Official Handbook of the Not-Terribly-Good Club of Great Britain

A very funny book ! Pile has gathered here the cream -- or, rather, the glorious dregs -- of the best stories of abominable failure. Here, for example, is the story of the Most Unsuccessful Tourist, who got off the plane during a refueling stop and spent three days in Los Angeles thinking he was in Rome.

I read this when I was 10 years old, and it was one of the funniest books I'd ever seen. As an adult with small children, I wanted to make sure they didn't miss out, and bought the book used. Now my kids think the book is hilarious.

And how do I feel about it as an adult? Mostly, the book holds up well. However, some of the stories now feel outdated. There have been much larger failures since the book was written! But, as the titles warns you, the book is incomplete.

In this age of tension, war, and political conflict, you may find yourself in need of a good laugh. This book may provide a solution, not for the world's ills but to lift that pervasive feeling of gloom. If you’ve got that nagging feeling that no one can make a mess of things as badly as you, then this book will lift your spirits, assuring you that as incompetent as we all feel at times, there is always someone who makes a worse muck of things than we do.

Within these pages lies an unparalleled collection of news stories of events that didn’t quite go as planned. From what might be the least successful mugging—ever—to an innocent attempt to work through a lunch hour that gets interrupted by a cow, these LOL events had me rolling. This 1979 book has all the humor of the Darwin Awards (1985) but without the death and dying.

Don’t plan to sit down and read this collection all at once. The book will do that for you.
