Jack Hunter is always on a quest for lost art, ancient manuscripts, and anything else that’ll romance the millions of viewers who watch his show each week. He hasn’t always hit pay dirt in his searches though, and a string of empty global treasure hunts has left his show on the brink of cancellation. Jack needs a white whale, a holy grail, nothing less than a miracle to revive his career.
Aloysius “Alo” Green likes his ivory towers. He’s content to study from the comfort of a university library and publish papers nobody other than academics will ever read. But coded letters pointing to hidden Nazi treasure fall into his hands, and while colleagues warn him to keep them to himself, Alo can’t stop obsessing. He makes a huge mistake and publishes a paper on his find, ignoring the danger doing so will bring.
Jack is sure he’s struck gold when his assistant brings Alo’s paper to him. Alo wants nothing to do with Jack or his televised treasure hunt. But after Alo is threatened, it appears Jack is his best bet to silence those who seek to use him to find the vast wealth first.
By trusting Jack, Alo might’ve saved himself… or made his worst decision yet.
MJ O’Shea has never met a music festival, paintbrush, or flower crown she can stay away from. She loves rainstorms and a perfect cup of tea, beach days, music, bright colors, and more than anything a cozy evening with a really great book.
She is from the Pacific Northwest. While she still lives there and loves it, MJ has the heart of a wanderer. So she puts all her dreams of far off places and extraordinary people in her books.
Except for every once in a while when she does what all travelers have to do on occasion… come home.
I’ve always been a treasure hunting lover. Adventurous travels, long-lost treasures and dangerous recon missions…some of my all time favorite movies involve all of the above. I’m also drawn to most of O’Shea’s stories…I typically jive with her. Regrettably, we didn’t this time around.
Alo is a young brainiac busting his butt in college. He lives with his head in his books at home with his parents. It’s not that he is failing to launch per say, but he has no interest in giving up the comforts his mother and father provide him. He has no time to socialize and honestly, no desire. Though he’s in his early twenties, he’s never had a boyfriend. *virgin alert*
I liked Alo. He is innocent and nerdy and super cute. When his grandfather moves into a senior living complex his belongings are distributed within the family and Alo inherits a stack of letters. These letters contain clues to hidden treasure his great-grandfather collected with his slippery fingers decades earlier. No one was able to decipher the mysterious breadcrumbs the letters contain. However, one should never underestimate a clever nerd when it comes to puzzles. In a moment of stupidly, Alo publishes a paper stating his findings. He quickly becomes a very popular young man.
Jack is a Hollywood “treasure hunter” looking at the final take on his television career. He needs something big to save his show and lucky for him, a naïve college boy sends out a neon sign presenting him with the break he’s desperate for. For some reason I didn’t click with Jack. I was wary of him for the majority of this quest and then grew to dislike him by the end. Jack was a jerk. Alo deserves someone…non-Jack.
Together Alo, Jack and his small crew sneak into Europe and follow Alo’s confident *fingers and toes crossed* map to find the priceless treasures. This was fun and exciting. The adrenaline is rushing and the European dash and stash was awesome. I would have enjoyed this significantly more if romance was nonexistent or extremely different.
If I’m brutally honest, I was disappointed with the loose editing. I think it could have been tighter and cleaner.
The treasure hunting was fun but when I consider my aversion to Jack and the romantic arc of the story…I will admit that I was let down. Here’s hoping you have more success than I did!
This has a very promising start, which transitioned into a slow-going yet rushed narration of a treasure hunting adventure. I didn’t even feel the chemistry between Alo and Jack. In short, I don’t believe that they’re actually “in-love” adding the fact that it has a HFN ending.
An easy, quick read that reminded me some of a less exciting National Treasure...with events & drama just as unbelievable, but without the distracting entertainment of Nicolas Cage chewing up the scenes. Oddly, it felt like a Reader's Digest Condensed version of a longer book; little character development, introspection or growth and some of the artifact retrieval was off-page. The bad-guy was laughably stereotypical, too.
Who knew that publishing an article about how your great-grandfather secretly hid treasure all over Europe would lead to trouble? Well, ok, probably anyone could have figured that out. But it wasn’t exactly like Alo was expecting people to try and kill him for the letters in his possession. Or for some creepy rich dude to send his henchmen after him. Two months after the article was published, Alo is deeply regretting it all, though.
Then tv presenter Jack Hunter, star of a treaure-seeker adventure show, drops into his life. And while Alo would like to just fade back into obscurity, and safety, he is more than a little tempted by Jack and his offer to help him find the treasure hidden by his great-grandfather. Though, to be honest he could do w/o the constant fear of death.
When I read the blurb for this book I thought it was a great premise. Treasure hunts, shadowy villains, hot Indiana Jones-like character. Lots of fun.
Which it was…for the most part. The trail thru Europe, with all the cool locations and slightly less than legal tours they had to take to get to the treasure, was cool. The history of it, the underlying truth of where all these things came from, was something I enjoyed reading about.
However, the romance and the mystery (of who was following them) aspects were a bit of a let down. I honestly didn’t feel any of the chemistry between the two MCs. Had this just been an adventure story I think I would have bought it more. Both Alo and Jack are great characters, but between them there wasn’t any spark. And I think Jack got off way too easily at the end. He barely even apologised for acting like an ass and Alo was all happy and shit to declare his undying love.
And that twist at the end really felt like it came out of nowhere. I like what happened, and what the twist was, but I would have liked to have had some clues leading me up to the reveal.
This was an entertaining story, especially if you are in a mood for late night breaking and pretty low-angst adventure. I just wish the there had been a bit more than that.

Thank you, MJ, for yet another wonderful story ♥
I’m usually not very anal about my reads as long as they’re fun and I enjoy the boys and their chemistry, which I did greatly.
But our little group here got away with so much… I can’t imagine it being that easy to break into those places without being seen. Especially the Brandenburger Tor. Is it really possible to climb it with a ladder? And not being seen by anyone? Sure it was the middle of the night, but yeah. And the Hofbräuhaus? Huh. I’ve been there a couple times, and I just can’t imagine not being seen doing anything there =D There literally being no people around, like ever, okay once they were seen, but still, I found it a tad difficult to accept how easy it was for them to get their treasures :(
But okay, that all didn’t actually dampen my enjoyment, what did a little was the lack of actual riddles and the actual treasure hunt seeming so short :( while the story itself felt quite long. Don’t know how to explain it other than I wished there’d been more details about his grandfathers letters, more riddles… I wanted to see what he wrote and how the riddles looked. Maybe actually do some thinking? =)
And it was sad to see that some of the items they discovered wasn’t talked about. Where did they find them? The ring for example. What other places did they go where they didn’t find anything? I wanted to know and see a bit more here and there. I felt like I was sitting around in hotels, waiting, more than doing the actual hunting for things.
Please don't take this the wrong way though, I really, really loved the book ♥
I loved the action, adventure and mystery in this book! You get Jack who is a treasure hunter with his own TV show and Alo who very smart and is a teachers aide in collage. Well Alo discovers a hidden treasure map in some letters his grandfather gave him. Well then weird things start happening and lets just say I was on the edge of my seat after that. Alo and Jack were very good together and the sparks between these two. You could tell how much they were falling for each other. There was just much going on in this book between Alo running from bad guys to Jack just trying to save his show. Plus all the different characters you meet. I also loved the way the author wrote these two men together. This book was definitely a slow burn but for Jack and Alo it worked.
So all together I really liked this book! I would recommend this book! I received this book free in exchange for an honest review from Inked Rainbow Reads.
I was really looking forward to this one because the premise sounded really interesting. It was slow to start with as it built up to the treasure hunt but I was okay with that as it built up the background and Arlo as a character. Then he meets Jack who I just didn't like and I certainly didn't believe the romance. Jack calls Arlo "kid" throughout the book and I didn't feel the chemistry. The treasure hunting parts were fun but then Jack acts like a complete jerk. Arlo forgives him way to easily and I never believed these two were in love. Not even sure the author did given the mundane HFN ending.
I really liked the premise, and enjoyed them running around Europe and finding great treasures. I liked Alo and Jack as characters, but they did need a bit more zing added to their relationship.
My biggest disappointment was (mild spoiler) But no, we had to have The Big Misunderstanding instead. Very unfortunate.
Interesting premise. University student Alo goes on a treasure hunt after he is sent some letters written by his great grandfather in the war. I enjoyed this romp through Europe as Alo decihers the letters and finds the treasures.
Indiana Jones m/m style! I always did like a good mystery and/or adventure, so I was excited to jump into a modern day treasure hunt. The plot was intriguing and there was definitely an element of danger. Jack and Alo were an okay couple – I’ve encountered many others that have had more appeal to me, but they worked. All in, a pleasant way to get lost for a few hours.
The book has adventure and it has relationship building, but it does not do a great job of either one. The author failed to make most discoveries exciting and failed to show the bonds that built the relationship between Alo and Jack. The concept of the book is great, the execution of the writing mediocre.
Another great book by MJ OShea I have yet to read a book by her I did not like if you enjoy M/M action romance this Book for you I’m giving this book 4 stars because while I did enjoyed very much with a little filling Out and polish it could have been amazing
This book started out pretty interesting but sadly didn’t stay that way. Which is kind of surprising given the content and constant danger the characters seem to be in. I just thought too many things didn’t work in the book for me personally.
Alo is a college student who gets a hold of some letters his family has always thought held a clue as to what happened to his grandfather who disappeared in the war. A Jewish man who talked his way into working for a Nazi who has a an obsession with collecting art. During war of course so the means his “collecting” was no doubt under dubious circumstances. In the letters Alo finds clues as to where the treasures are hidden. Where Alo fails is telling people about it. He goes so far as to publish his findings drawing the attention of some unsavory sorts but it also brings Jack to his door.
Jack Hunter is a treasure hunting reality TV star who’s show is about to be canceled. He puts his hope of saving it on finding the things in Alo’s letters. It’s a leap but it would surely save the show. Jack , his team and Alo race around Europe trying to solve the puzzles and fall for each other in the process.
I think where the book loses me is when Alo publishes the letters. He’s supposed to be so smart that he’s the only one who can decode the letters but he publishes the findings? Nazi war treasure is a HUGE thing. Sure Alo was being ridiculed by his peers and his department head didn’t believe him so he might have just wanted some validation? Maybe but it seemed like an extremely dumb move. I guess it shows how naive Alo is? He must be if he thinks it”ll all just go away after that.
The baddie is this book was kind of a disappoint. I was more in fear of the police busting them for breaking into to places and taking things than the danger from the possibility of some other people. I just think this part of the book fell flat.
Sadly the relationship didn’t amount to much for me either. I like Jack and I like Alo but there just didn’t seem to be much chemistry between the two. Alo seemed to go all school boy crush on Jack which was kind of cute but he came off as quite young and again naive. It’s also a totally squicks me out when you call a guy kid and then sleep with him like Jack frequently did. Yes there’s an age difference but that’s not sexy at all. The big avoidance at the end felt like it was put there to manufacture some angst. Which it didn’t. It just made me wish it would end sooner and think less of Jack. The excuse was sweet but still didn’t satisfy why there was no contact made.
So basically this book was kind of a miss for me. The mystery wasn’t all that exciting. The action didn’t amount to much. The couple didn’t do it for me. I’m a little disappointed because the blurb had me so excited to read this and I usually like this author.
As a mystery, I’d rate this as a solid 4 stars. As Alo and Jack’s team descend upon Europe in search of Nazi treasure, readers are given a brief lesson in the European WWII Nazi occupied areas. Along the way, Alo realizes that someone is following them – and when this person is finally revealed, I have to admit, I didn’t see that coming! Yes, at times it is over the top – but that is to be expected in any good action novel. At times, readers have to give the author some allowance for simplicity for the story’s sake. For instance, the idea that in today’s day and age, a group of people could wander around public places, locate a treasure, and remove that treasure without setting alarm bells off as a bit over the top – but then again, the thought that a hidden treasure could be hidden for so many years right in plain sight is too.
As a romance, this book left much to be desired. I wasn’t feeling the chemistry between Jack and Alo. Jack is older by a few years and sexually experienced. On the other hand, we have Alo who is sort of naïve when it comes to relationships and is a virgin to boot. Yet, Alo has had some experience kissing – which apparently he does very well. Anyhow…while the sex scenes were spicy, they weren’t anything spectacular – especially considering we are told over and over about Alo’s lack of experience. Furthermore, this book did the whole “misunderstanding” after their night together where Alo’s heart is broken, while readers are wondering how on earth this could happen when there weren’t any loving proclamations made between the two. Sex is sex, sex is not love. But then we get the standard happily ever after ending, all while I was sitting there thinking this story would have been so much better if the “romance portion” wasn’t there.
Globe trotting due, Alo and Jack. An unlikely pair but as time goes by they start learning each other, the quirks, the mannerism and then more.
Jack, has been doing the same TV show for years, but him and the show is about to be cancelled. This is his last shot. But as we learn, even this maybe too late.
One ill fated paper and everyone and their brother is after Alo and some letters that may or may not hold certain key letters and numbers that will lead to treasure stolen from a high Nazi official, how in turn stole them.
As it became very obvious to Alo, Jack maybe the only person that can help him get his life back to normal, and that will start with a treasure hunt across the world.
As the four person team band together, deciphering the clues, solving the puzzles and finding the loot always staying ahead of the bad guys. We get to find out more about each one, not much, but enough to get a little connection. The hero’s welcome at the end is a nice touch, even if we are left wondering if these two will get a HFN until the very end. This is such a sweet contemporary take-off on Indian Jones and whatever treasures he aims to pursue that I am happy to overlook the fact that the adventure is filled with not-likely-to-happen scenes among the treasure hunts.
No matter. The whole shtick is wrapped up in two completely opposite guys: Jack Hunter, who is the Indiana Jones here, and the sweet protagonist of the tale, the deliciously named Aloysius Green. He's a nice Jewish boy from the Upper West side whose name is a total, hilarious, malapropism. (Not a shred of Irish in his clan, how author O'Shea thought this up deserves kudos).
Adventure aside, this is a low key love story that has a somewhat believable plot and some good supporting characters but really has a heart and soul in Aloysius, or as he prefers, Alo.
While the aftermath of the hunt takes too long to resolve, the last line of the book is priceless--and I would love to see a sequel if only to get more of Jack and Alo under my skin.
I like the treasure hunt plot in the book. I would have really liked it if we could have seen in print the letters, it may have helped build up the suspense. At times I felt there was leaps of logic that I couldn't make for not having all the facts. The mad dash around Europe was good, lots of key places to look up! I didn't feel the tension from the team being chased or watched as I didn't feel the threat of them was high, other than the shooting. It had built to there and I was expecting more overt action from then on. Alo and Jack were nice together but as the focus is the treasure hunt there's not a lot of their time focussing on the attraction, so it just seems to happen. An enjoyable romp, was expecting a bit more oomph but I did enjoy
This is not a new author for me and this book was good but a little predictable. I loved the action and adventure but I just could not seem to really get into the book. This may have to do with some of the off-the-wall types of situations they characters were in. Alo and Jack were clearly a couple meant to be together and would love to see more to their story. Overall a really good read and the writing was flawless.
I was given this book by Inked rainbow Reads in exchange for an honest review.
I would love to have given this book more stars but I guess I expected more than I got out of it. The whole thing felt rushed and I got no chemistry off of either character for the other until all of a sudden they were hooking up. I think this book need to be longer and possibly a multi book story to give each thing the "screen time" it deserved.
Started out an interesting mystery with a young academic and his family heritage of old WWII letters supposedly hiding clues to lost treasures. Ended up as a very short story concept stretched into a novella that had very little overall interest in the end.
This one was fun! It really felt like a tour of Europe, Nazi treasure hunting style. The relationship did seem like it took second place to the treasure hunt, very slow burn. I'd have liked a little more relationship resolution/building at the end.
A fun treasure hunting story, Indiana Jones type. A bit over the top, but in a fun way. Alo and Jack following clues to stolen Nazi treasures through Europe. Overall, an OK read.
