A burning tale of love, lust, arson and betrayal...a Great Read!

"Alpine Glow" is both an exciting historical fiction story based in the Old West and a modern day thriller taking place in the quaint Texas town of Alpine. A fantastic parallel story that starts at the small town newspaper in Alpine, Texas and takes you all the way back to the dusty and dangerous water disputes between landowners, lawmakers and law breakers of the American West.

Beverly Conners, a big time Denver Post journalist, finds herself at a crossroad, personally, professionally, financially and geographically. Newly divorced, unemployed and far from home under the beautiful Texas sky, she has to make some tough choices. Little does Bev know that her decision to work for a small Texas town newspaper will bring her into the most dangerous, fast breaking news story of her life. Or that her interest in the history of her new western home will give her insight and strength to fight off a modern day madman.

⭐ Entertaining as hell!

Alpine Glow is a thrilling modern-day mystery joined with an exciting historical parallel story! It’s also written by my mother in law so wooohoooo GO MOM!

Summary:

Beverly Conners is looking for a fresh start after her recent divorce and finds herself in Alpine, Texas. Thinking this small town would be the perfect place to cool down, Bev is surprised when things heat up, literally. A couple of buildings in town have been burned down in the past few months with no leads. Are they accidents or is someone intentionally setting the fires? As a recently employed journalist by the local newspaper, Bev makes it her mission to uncover this small-town mystery.

As Bev looks into these fires, she stumbles upon a fascinating story of love, lust, arson, and betrayal from the past.

The Murrays and Caversons are rival ranchers in southwest Texas during the 1800s. When a dispute over a watering hole turns into a shootout, the Caversons are massacred but not before killing the head of the Murray family. However, the remaining Clint and Jacob Murray leave the Caverson ranch unaware that someone survived, and she wants revenge. When both brothers meet the beautiful Netty Bingham, who is new to town, little do they know their hearts, as well as their lives, are in danger.

Trigger Warning: sexual assault, rape, gore, kidnapping

My Thoughts:

The story is fast-paced. The writing is descriptive and colorful without droning on and on. This really is a comprehensive, concise, quick read.

I LOVE the parallel stories! I've never read anything like this before and found it refreshing. I was always at the edge of my seat, excited to find out what happens to Beverly and Netty. Usually, when there are multiple POVs or back and forth storylines, I care more about one character over another, but not in this case. Both Bev and Netty are interesting and constantly seem to find themselves in the midst of all the drama.

I admit, I prefer Netty's love triangle to Bev's love triangle. Netty's relationship with the Murray brothers was far more interesting due to the added element of revenge. For a while, I assumed it would be an enemies-to-lovers story, but it DEFINITELY does not end that way. I really liked Beverly and Sam's relationship, but I was a bit confused by the quick romance with Hal. There could have been more development with that to make the relationship more convincing. But in the end, it doesn't take away from the story.

The endings for both the modern and western story are INSANE! Just when you think things are finally over, something heart-pounding happens!

Overall, this is a quick, fun read for anyone who loves a good mystery/thriller/historical fiction! This was my second time reading it and I found it to be just as exciting as the first.

The glow from fires set in this community in 1881 Texas and the present day. In each a gal is courted by two men. Alternate chapters jump from one time period to the other. There are few sympathetic characters in these intertwined tales. Bev is a three timing opportunist: Hal, Sam and Ethan her ex. After all the violence the book lacks a satisfactory ending and gives the reader no HEA. For that you have to buy the next book in the series.

It took me a couple of chapters to get into this story, but I did. This book is really two stories told simultaneously in present day and the old west past. I have to say, I was far more vested in the old west tale. The present-day romance was a little forced to me, the suspense not quite suspenseful. But overall Ms. March made the book work. I was entertained…which is all I ask for in a read.
