Rate this book
E. T. A. Hoffmann: Die Abenteuer der Silvester-Nacht Erstdruck in den Fantasiestücken in Callots Manier, 1814/15. Vollständige Neuausgabe mit einer Biographie des Autors. Herausgegeben von Karl-Maria Guth. Berlin 2015. Textgrundlage ist die Ausgabe: E.T.A. Hoffmann: Poetische Werke in sechs Bänden, Band 1, Berlin: Aufbau, 1963. 1822 erkrankt E.T.A. Juni in Berlin stirbt.

Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann, better known by his pen name E. T. A. Hoffmann (Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann), was a German Romantic author of fantasy and horror, a jurist, composer, music critic, draftsman and caricaturist. His stories form the basis of Jacques Offenbach's famous opera The Tales of Hoffmann, in which Hoffman appears (heavily fictionalized) as the hero. He is also the author of the novella The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, on which the famous ballet The Nutcracker is based. The ballet Coppélia is based on two other stories that Hoffmann wrote, while Schumann's Kreisleriana is based on Hoffmann's character Johannes Kreisler.

Hoffmann's stories were very influential during the 19th century, and he is one of the major authors of the Romantic movement.

This short story might not be for everybody, but I really enjoyed it. (It was recommended in M. Grant Kellermeyer's newsletter, by the way).

I haven't read Hoffmann for a long time, but remembered his stories as nightmarish, grotesque and half-crazy. Well, this one is certainly grotesque, and it does have parts that have the feeling of a nightmare, but it is also laugh-out-loud funny at times.

Peter Schlemihl has a short but sweet cameo, which I utterly enjoyed.

Everything passes as if in a dream, or maybe it is all a dream; people have violent mood swings; there is dark magic, but also a reminder that small children often need new stockings (because they do, don't they?). So, it's all just like in real life.

I guess this is not one of Hoffmann's darker tales, but it has left me with the intention to read//re-read more by him.
