Isabella Mary Beeton (née Mayson), universally known as Mrs Beeton, was the English author of Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management, and is one of the most famous cookery writers.

Popularly known as "Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management", it was a guide to running a Victorian household, with advice on fashion, childcare, animal husbandry, poisons, the management of servants, science, religion, and industrialism.

Of the 1,112 pages, over 900 contained recipes, such that another popular name for the volume is "Mrs Beeton's Cookbook". Most of the recipes were illustrated with coloured engravings, and it was the first book to show recipes in a format that is still used today. It is said that many of the recipes were actually plagiarised from earlier writers (including Eliza Acton), but the Beetons never claimed that the book's contents were original. It was intended as a guide of reliable information for the aspirant middle classes. Mrs Beeton is perhaps described better as its compiler and editor than as its author, many of the passages clearly being not her own words.

I have always been fascinated by the art of sweet making. Childhood trips to traditional sweet shoppes were always a source of wonderment. Upon entering the shop, my eyes would become aglow with delight at the shiny jars of rosy apples (which were as ruddy as my blushing cheeks), strawberry bon bons and pear drops. I felt as though I had just stepped into Willy Wonka’s factory. When I stumbled upon this little book filled with delightful, traditional sweet recipes, I couldn’t resist picking it up! The book contains information on who Mrs. Beeton was, a history on the emergence of sweets in the Victorian era and a selection of wondrous recipes that will make any child’s eyes gleam with delight. From sherbet fruit drops and vanilla fudge to rose candy canes, you are spoilt for choice! As a novice confectioner, I thought it would be wise to start with something simple. Gazing over the pages filled with dreamy marshmallows and violet & rose creams, I stumbled upon a set of coconut and raspberry ice squares. I wrote up a little blog post on them (https://frostingfairy.wordpress.com/2...) and I was surprised at how easy they were to create. I definitely recommend this book to any bakers out there who want to test their sugar craft skills! ☁️🌸🍬🍥
