Workmanlike biography. Chronological rather than analytical but good to have events presented in sequence & therefore good as an introduction to the subject.
A decent work about one of history's greatest megalomaniacs. And no, I am not talking about the inept fool who is giving today his last state of the nation address in his usual form of a litany of lies.
My edition was deceptively printed. On the back binding it said The Rise and Fall. No mention of vol1. When I came to the end of the book it was only at Austerlitz. Then I had a closer look at the title page within the book, that said The Rise. Sneaky. Thankfully the book is so poorly written/edited that I am not tempted to buy vol2. A book with many complicated battle descriptions should have more and better maps. I really do fail to see how more that one or two quotes from sappy love letters to Josephine are necessary to convey that aspect of the man.
Pretty average popularist biography covering the events in short sharp little bites. I guess for it's purpose it does well but not for anyone who has already read fairly widely into the era
