A reminder that the best English country houses to visit are those opened to the public by their private owners. English Heritage & the National Trust do a good job on conservation, but tend to lean to the theme-park style of presentation.

Throughout this book, Thelwell shows his affectionate, and astutely delectable and light touch in portraying the funny side of the British class system. He also gives us such gems as the exasperated parents, each holding one hand of their inconsolable bawling toddler, walking past a signpost indicating such treats as Lions, Aviary, Monkey Enclosure, Dolphin Pool, Tigers …, mother turning to father and saying; “Oh, for heaven’s sake take him to see the rats in the dungeons.” (p.42).

Jolly stuff. And it turns out that Norman Thelwell's lions are even funnier than his ponies.
