She'd sworn vengeance against them all. Every Yankee scoundrel who trod the charred ruins of her once beautiful South — and Magnolia Hall, the family home she vowed to reclaim.
An encounter with a stranger changed everything. In the secluded beauty of the gentle willows, tender whisperings enchanted her...love's caresses thrilled her with new sensations...searing kisses scorched her lips with a flame that reached the very depth of her soul. And she was lost in the trembling passion of her own desire.
But it had been a cruel deception. Holly had lost her heart to Scott Colter... the Yankee commander! Hurt and humiliated, but determined to rebuild her life, a destitute Holly was at the mercy of her ruthless stepbrother, and callously used to satisfy his evil schemes and desires. Yet the memory of a Yankee commander still haunted all Holly's waking moments — tormented her nights with longing. And she lived for the dream that she'd again know the ecstasy of his passionate love.

Pat is the published author of over forty books of romantic fiction. Several of her titles have appeared on the New York Times Bestseller list. One of her books, "Ocean of Dreams", is based on her own shipboard romance when she met her former husband, a Norwegian engineer.
She is also a former Radio/TV Motorsports Journalist, covering NASCAR Grand National Stock Car Racing. Her work has won many awards by the National Motorsports Press Association.
Pat has cruised the eastern and western Caribbean extensively, as well as the Greek Islands, the fjords of Norway all the way to the North Cape, and has made several transatlantic crossings.
She prefers traveling single, because it gives her more opportunities to meet and make new friends. While she admits going solo is not for everyone, she says for her it is perfect, because she is an outgoing person, and, being a writer, enjoys meeting new "characters."
The only thing she does not like about traveling is having to leave behind her best friend and companion, Krysy, a 14-year old Wire-haired fox terrier.
The Civil War is over and the carpetbaggers swarm the south. Holly Maxwell and her mother Claudia don't have many options with the family plantation burned and the taxes due. Claudia's a bit of a flibbertigibbet who is more interested in catching a new man, Yankee or not. Holly, on the other hand, loathes all Yankees with a passion and is determined to make it on her own on the piece of land in the bayou left her by her grandfather. Yep, she'll plant and fish and sell them to make a profit. All. By. Herself. Holly dresses like a man and swears like a soldier and charms all the men, including Yankee soldier Scott Colter. The story (such as it is) continues with verbal and sexual sparring between Scott and Holly, a mystery surrounding a missing gold shipment, and some evil evil baddies who try to frighten Holly off of her property and...
Trust me, you don't want to know more. This was very dire, and one best qualified as a wall-paper romance. Still not sure? Here's a few choice quotes that should convince you to pass:
"Oh, my, Colonel," she cooed. "You aren't going to shoot a woman just because she wants your body are you?"
"When she had taken him to glory, he reached down and lifted her to her feet. He dropped her on the bed and, without bothering to undress her, lifted her skirts and her underthings and plunged in."
""He entered her, a sword of victory, devouring her hunger with his own till they found, together, the ultimate glory..."
"Within the dizzying throes, the burning hunger, she thrilled to feel the liquid of his pulsing desire against her flesh - evidence that he wanted her intensely."
*rolls eyes*
There's plenty more like that, but you'll have to read it for yourself to find them. Some of my friends at Goodreads have been reading Hagen's Coltrane series with great success, and as I'm always on the hunt for civil war romances I was tickled to pick this up on the cheap at a Friends of Library sale. Wish I'd just left it on the shelf for someone else to pick.
This was not one of Patricia Hagan's best. I started reading but stopped halfway through, which I've never done before when reading one of her novels. It seemed like she was just going through the motions with this one, as there didn't seem to be any life in the characters, despite all the whining, yelling and complaining (not to mention mild cursing) the heroine does in the first chapters. Even that seemed artificial. The book lacked the spirit of her other novels; my guess is, for whatever reason, her heart just wasn't in it.
This is one book Patricia Hagan fans can easily bypass.
Holly Maxwell would never bed a yankee or even look at one. But when she meets Scott she denies her feelings, of love for him, She wants to be on her own but it become to dangerous. Scott saves her.
