SHADOWS OF ANGELS is the first book in a new dark fantasy series. There were multiple points of view, from the orphan who is unaware of who she really is and what she holds, to a young king who looks like a lion, to a fickle young woman, a brave knight and rebel, to other companions with their own roles to play. Like any great fantasy, this book sets up the series for the future struggle of good versus evil. Good being the rightful king and those with the Zaad Stones and evil being the usurper currently ruling along with the demons and dark creatures who destroy and kill all that they can. It was an engrossing story with lots of physical and mental fighting that tested these characters.

I liked that the author let the characters show their flaws and make mistakes, even falter at times. She also let them fight and succeed. Good stories are made of characters who evolve, grow, and change into something stronger and better. I was disappointed in spots, but the disappointment came from wanting these characters to not give up, to believe in themselves, and to succeed.

The plot had a lot going on. The story felt driven and engaging from beginning to end. There was definitely a darkness and grit to the story with plenty of death and violence, as well as some torture. It was not pretty or necessarily enjoyable. At the same time, it allowed the characters to really struggle and fight, contrasting the good things and happy moments.

I'm curious where the story will head next. I can see some budding romances and I'm curious how those will work out. Romance definitely is not the focal point of the story, but I appreciate that it looks like if there is any it will be built upon friendship and individuals having shared experiences and goals that bind them together.

I'd recommend this one to those who enjoy dark fantasy and series, such as The Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo.

Content: Quite a bit of violence, but otherwise clean.

Let me start by saying Rollins world that she has built is absolutely amazing. There are so many characters it was sometimes a little hard to keep track of them, so I started writing them down, and putting the connections together. It was so much fun.

When something clicked I would make another note. Pretty soon I had two pages of notes on the book. There are so many twists and turns, and so many webs weaved in this book it kept me turning the pages, and left me unable to put the book down.

So many characters that I liked, like Aerbin, Hilfawn, Timbrick, Lady Teepin, King Sabaderious, the Orchal, and so many more. I love the authors use of such unique names. Each character is just as unique as their names.

There are demon's, bad guys, good guys, There is royalty, dark forests, magic, and beasts.

The writing is beautiful, and flows really well. I was drawn in from the very beginning. Want to know about some of those characters? I know how you can do it :). Read the book. If you like fantasy you will like this book. I don't want to say too much about the characters, because the way they weave together was part of the fun of reading the book.

The magic in this book revolves around something called a Zaad Stone. I wish I had one :). I love stories with magic in them. I have read quite a few of them, but it's so much fun to see how an author puts their own spin on it.

I will say that the "beast" is my favorite character so far. I have many favorites but he is my "most" favorite :).

From beginning to end, you will enjoy the ride that this book takes you on. You will enjoy the worlds that are built as well. It's beautiful.

Right before Aerbrin's father is killed by forest dwellers, he passes his Zaad stone to her. For some reason, she survived the attack. She has no idea what this stone does or why her life was spared. After the attack, she leaves to go live with her aunt and uncle. Her cousin, Hilfawn, has some secrets and the two of them end up on an adventure that changes everything.

There are lots of moving parts in this book which kept my attention. We get lots of different viewpoints which I like in a book like this. It actually didn't confuse me too much. Aerbrin's cousin, Hilfawn, is a bit of a flirt and starts out shallow but she grows quite a bit throughout the book and shows what she's really made of. There are so many other great characters which were easy to love or hate and I'm looking forward to learning more about all of them!

I enjoyed the world building and learning about the Zaad stones. There is much more to learn about them as the series progresses. This is the first book in a trilogy so, while it doesn't end on a cliffhanger, there are still questions to be answered. It starts out intense and doesn't let up the entire time. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more in this series!

I received a copy of this book to review. My opinion is 100% my own.

his is a first novel of L.G Rollins. The story is about Aerbrin and the Zaad Stones. Aerbrin’s father was kiled because of the Zaad Stones. Sir Brashin’s has an eye for the Zaad Stones because the power gives a long life and you can’t take and own it without the permission of the owner that you can take the Zaad Stone. When her father died she went to her relatives and there she met her cousin Hilfawn. Hilfwan has a relationship with Sir Letalis–one of the soldiers in the Kingdom.

While the story is about Aerbrin , the scenes also has about Hilfawn and Timbrick’s Journey. The story is in 3rd point of view.

I’m having a hard time reading this again because it’s slow paced but while reading this especially on the middle part where all revelations revealed. I expect more action on this and heart pounding since it’s historical fiction but it’s less action. The characters were great especially Hilfawn, and I didn’t expect what happened on her because she’s just a normal person. Timbrick

Well, I hope on the second novel that there’s something romance between Timbrick and Hilfawn, because there’s something going on between them or is it just me? And also more action.

I would like to thank Sweetwater Books for a copy of this book to review. Though I received this book for free, that has no impact upon the honesty of my review.

Goodreads Teaser: After the forest dwellers destroy her home and kill her father, Aerbrin sets off on a journey to find the truth about her people, her kingdom, and the mysterious Zaad stone that contains a power she never imagined. Magic and mystery join forces in this intriguing fantasy world. Full of shifting alliances and twists you won’t see coming, it’s a can’t-miss read.

As the first book in a planned trilogy the required world development and character backgrounds take place here. Though that slows the pacing of the tale somewhat, this book does pick up speed fairly early on. Aerbrin is the first protagonist we meet, but not the only main player in this story. Both her cousin Hilfawn, and the mysterious Timbrick also play large roles. While Aerbrin's tale is unwinding in one direction, both Hilfawn and Timbrick start out on separate paths that soon converge, leaving them to walk the rest of their story together. This of course means that the story is told via multiple points of view, which actually works pretty well in this case.

What I enjoyed the most in this book were the characters. Some, like Aerbrin's, I was drawn to from the very beginning. She's a strong, independent female, yet we get to experience her emotions without her becoming weak or ineffectual. Meanwhile I found Hilfawn to be rather off putting initially, yet as the story progresses more of her layers are exposed, showing that she isn't the shallow ditz she comes across as. In fact it seems she plays that role because it's what's expected of her, so she takes full advantage of it. Then there's Timbrick. Of the three primary protagonists he is the one least explored, though that may simply be due to his circumstances. If there's one thing that stands out about him it would be his ability to place others before himself.

As for the antagonists there are plenty to go around, and they do their job quite well. They are very easy to dislike, and so far no redeeming qualities have shown through. Yet I hold out hope that at least one will develop some qualities that make it more difficult to completely hate them, thus creating a more complex personality to wrestle with.

While the arc of the story is relatively smooth, there are still spots where things either go to slowly for my taste, or things are glossed over to quickly. But as this is the first book in a trilogy I'm holding out hope that those situations will be more deeply addressed, or help clarify future points as the rest of the story unfolds.

I'll admit that I wasn't sure if this was the first book in a series or intended as a stand-alone story until the very end when I read the details about the author. That made it frustrating in parts, as I simply didn't think there'd be enough time to resolve all the various plot lines; yet by the end I felt that this could have worked as a stand-alone book or as the first in a series. Had it been a single book the ending would have been weaker than it should have been, but as a series opener the story still has room to grow. It will be interesting to see if there really is enough material to get a solid trilogy out of this story, and likely one I'll be keeping an eye on.

*I recived a copy of this book in exchange of a honest review*

The Writing:
This book has multiple POVs, not only from two or three characters, there are a LOT. Sometimes it was great because you get into some characters head but sometimes I just wanted to keep reading in one POV and I couldn't. Besides that, the writing was great. It hasnt those loong descriptions that makes you want to skip them but you can imagine all places.

The Story:
I got into this book in the first pages. It intrigued me the way it started and how the story would continue. You follow one of the characters, Aerbrin. But when you get more into the book you follow two different stories that are very related. You'll meet Hilfawn, Aerbrin's cousin. You will follow these two ladies in their journey and you start following ReligioBenedic (weird name, at least for me), their kingdom in its own journey. This journey last goal is freedom from a tyrant, their actual king.
I liked following these stories but at the same time I just wanted to read one and not press 'pause' to change for the other one.
It has lots of fight and survival things. They fight demons and Forest Dwellers, creatures I imagined as kind of zombies (sorrynotsorry). I liked these supernatural things. At the end there is just a bit of mythology with I really liked too. Without doubts, its a fantasy, I think you could say a bit dark because they fight these bad supernatural creatures and their reality is pretty bad too. I almost forgot about a bit shapeshifting thing and powerful stones. The mind games that there are in some part of the books were great too.

The Characters:
Aerbrin: I liked her from the first moment. She is a fighter and someone who would risk her life for others. She doesn't pretend to be strong, she is strong.
Hilfawn: I didn't like her much until the middle-end of the book. I can't say I dislike her but I'm not to sure I like her. Bah, I'm complicated. She has a character development through the book, and ends up stronger than at the beginning, circumstances demand her that.
Vita: I thought we would see him more. We saw him at the first part of the book and then he disappeared. I liked him but I really wanted to know more to see him more.
Timbrick: I like him! I can't wait to see him in her future role.

This is a good fantasy, with dark supernatural elements, and mind games. Characters that try to save their kingdom and survive, thing that is not easy most of time.

If you like the Throne of Glass series, I think this is perfect for you.

There's tons to like about L.G. Rollins' first novel, Shadow of Angels. The story features not just one strong female protagonist, but two, and Rollins weaves a captivating tale as her heroines deal with dangerous liaisons, magical monsters, and mysterious stones with hidden powers. The tragic opening scenes grab the reader's attention and while there are occasional moments when the action wanders, the story picks up a whole lot of momentum going into the middle when Aerbrin and Hilfawn find themselves trapped in a mystical demon-infested forest and inside the mind of a vicious creature who feeds on memories. I was impressed with the conflicts presented in the story that were metaphysical as well as real. It's easy for a story to get lost when the plot goes to new places but Rollins pulls it off with surprising deftness and confidence. Rollins's strength lies in crafting unique characters and turning them loose in fresh and fascinating settings. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series and I'm certain Rollins' writing will become more well-rounded as she continues to grow as an author. Unfortunately, the editing was spotty and there were too many places where words should have been corrected or punctuation fixed and those errors made reading a problem at times. Those problems aside, Shadows of Angels deserves a place on your shelf if you like fantasy that's a little bit dark and more than a little bit creative. Recommended for YA and older.

Wow, there really is a lot going on in this book! It starts out with Aerbrin and her father, they know they're going to be attacked by forest dwellers and as her father is dying he tries to protect Aerbrin up to his very last breath. But Aerbrin must be severely cursed, as she's on her way to the capitol in a carriage she picked because it's guarded, they are attacked and robbed. I liked Aerbrin, she is a great character, very down to earth and not high maintenance. I loved that through the course of the book she was able to grow and discover her own strength as well as the strength of the Zaad stone her father left her with.

Her cousin, Hilfawn, is kind of the opposite of Aerbrin, she is a big flirt, always trying to get her own way. But I loved the way that she was able to grow throughout the book.

The plot of this book is busy, there are tons of characters trying to attack Aerbrin and Hilfawn through the whole thing. They have to watch out for the scary forest dwellers, demons, orchals, and Hilfawn's own father sadly.

I liked the plot for the most part, but there were a few places where so much was happening that I got a little bit confused. I also have to say that the ending of this one did not really seem like an ending. Hopefully that means that there will be more of the story in the form of another book.

Full review on my blog, Books and Starlight.

Shadows of Angels is a first book in a new series and follows Aerbrin on the journey of saving the kingdom from a usurper king. On her travels and adventures, she meets friends and foes alike, creatures you wouldn't even want to meet in your nightmares. The fight is for Zaad Stones, magical, powerful stones that can prolong the owner's life and can be only given away, never taken.

While it was kind of slow paced – and honestly, I had a bit of a hard time getting into it –, there was a lot of action and fighting in it, along with a bit of graphic violence. But it's a world where the good fights the evil, so it was expected. I liked Laura's writing, it was easy to follow, even if I had to check back a million times to remember the names and places.

All in all, while I did expect a bit more from this book by the description, I still liked it. The characters were complex, the story compelling and you won't regret reading it.

This is a great start to the trilogy. The characters, settings, and plot line are all very imaginative and creative. While I did struggle with the first few chapters of the book, in terms of figuring out all of the characters (especially their names!) and what everything in the story was (creatures, places, settings), once I got past that part, I couldn't put the book down. The book flips back and forth between the different characters and their roles in the story. They are all connected yet have their own paths to go down to reach the end goal. I liked the back and forth; I liked reading the different perspectives. There are great messages within each character and their role. I saw similarities from other books that I enjoyed growing up. Narnia, Wizard of Oz, as well as strong and courageous female lead characters. It's fantasy. It's suspense. It's imaginative. Would be a great book for readers 14 and up. Great debut series! I'm going to be anxiously awaiting the next book in the series to see where things go from here!

L. G. Rollin's amazing imagination has taken her on a dark but intriguing fantasy filled with danger for Aerbrin after her father, Gavil, sacrifices his life to save hers. Thus begins the incredible, life threatening danger that follows Aerbrin throughout the rest of the book. Unbelievable creatures, who are after a small stone that Aerbrin carries in her pocket and they are only part of the dark dangers she encounters.

Vita, Hilfawn, Timbrick and Teepin seem to be her only protection against all the evil creatures that want her dead, and, believe me, there are many.
Sometimes I couldn't keep up with all of them. But not only are the creatures Aerbrin's concern. There is a cursed land called Druiman and a demon, named Snugglib, who controls everything within that land.

I'm not into deep, dark fantasies, but this book is well written and the author's imagination is remarkable, causing me to want to read it until the very end. I recommend this book to those of you who enjoy fantasies filled with dangerous journeys, creepy creatures, black magic, evil and good powers
and continued frightening, yet intriguing events.

The writing was okay, but the middle was way too long. I think this story could have been told a lot better in half the words. There was just too much time where the characters weren't making any progress and things were just kind of happening to them. The end finally got interesting, but it took too long to get there. And it's not that I don't like long books, I've read plenty of big long epic fantasy books, this one just lacked a feeling of progression which got irritating. I also felt the characters themselves were pretty boring. True a lot of them could do some interesting things, but I didn't feel like I got to know them very well, like they didn't have a lot of personality.

Shadows of Angels is a refreshingly new, dark fantastical tale, while cleverly providing all that is sacred and dear to the fantasy reader. With attractive, lovable characters and on-the-edge-of-your-seat moments, L.G. Rollins' tale of Aerbrin and the mysterious Forest Dwellers is difficult to put down.
