We know we can talk to God, but it just sounds so important, so intimidating, so religious . We assume that only the very spiritual hear from Him directly. But author Sheila Walsh says "Every sound we utter, every thank you we say, every tear we cry in God's presence is prayer." Get Off Your Knees and Pray is a real woman's guide to real prayer-from understanding the biblical basis for prayer to cultivating a vital personal relationship with God. It is the perfect blend of practical advice, personal stories, and biblical truth to encourage and help you achieve greater intimacy with God through prayer. Prayer is not just a few sentences we say to God while on our knees. It is living out our ongoing, every-moment commitment to God. "Sheila steers us away from prayer as formula (say the right things the right way and God responds) and toward prayer as picture-a picture of God's desired relationship. Talking. Listening. Trusting. Living. This volume, warm and witty like its author deserves a spot on every reading calendar." -Max Lucado, best-selling author and minister "No matter what kind of difficulty you have about prayer, this book will help. Sheila has experienced all of them, and she will take you through them to where God has taken straight into His very real and accepting Presence." -Dr. Henry Cloud, speaker and coauthor of Boundaries

I LOVED THIS BOOK. I loved it so much I am going to read it again after going through some other books. It has been an awesome journey with this book as I rediscovered what prayer actually is, and my biggest takeaway is demonstrated in the title! Get off your knees & Pray. God looks way past our lofty words, colourful language, spiritual jargon and 'holy moly' tone. He sees right into our heart! I remember one clear example from the book where a boy not knowing how to pray and is also illiterate, just merely recited all that he knew... and I really identified with that. Thank you Sheila! I love your little boy and his stories too. :)
Sheila Walsh is incredibly open about her struggles and triumphs. This book was very encouraging and eye (and heart) opening as well. We're not all powerful public speakers, spiritual warriors or leaders. Some of us just do our best to make it through, day by day, and keep those we love in our hearts and prayers- however in-eloquent they may be. And Sheila Walsh explains why those prayers are just as meaningful an any other.
I enjoyed the book very much. She lived through a lot and has a lot of wisdom about prayer in general. She is saying that there is no right or wrong way to pray. You do not have to kneel and do some kind of devout right prayer. Pray like a child, holding nothing back. God will hear it and who cares what anyone else thinks. I would recommend this to anyone, in fact it was a book loaned to me by a friend. Very good read.
Sheila Walsh is a gifted communicator. She used many illustrations from her life to show how God wants us to pray, why He seems to not answer our prayers at times, how to know when you hear Him speak, and the reasons it is so important to pray. Sheila is engaging, easy to read and relate to. She is not preachy, but talks from her experience and study.
I thought I knew the name of the author from 700 Club, but she did not emphasize that time. Good. The book was mainly about her life -- marriage in late 30s, baby at 40. She was pleasant but uninspiring, with few memorable lines. "He wants to be our first response." "We were never meant to be alone. We are relational beings designed to thrive and blossom in community."
Walsh discusses such topics as Why is so hard to pray, Do my prayers make a difference and why does God seem absent when I pray. Walsh offers encouragement through Scripture and she shares honestly about the ups and downs of her own prayer life. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in growing their own prayer life.
I am also reading this book because it is good for me. It is about Sheila Walsh's prayer life and her advice to others. I am reading a chapter a day and finding great wisdom. I am especially fond of Sheila Walsh's writing style.... folksy, with a lot of good information.
I read this book shortly after losing my MIL to a 5 year battle with cancer. I was beyond consoling, yet Sheila Walsh, in her gifted and blessed ways, gave my heart ease as I worked through this book. Her books have always had special meaning to me, but this one ranks as one of her best.
This was a thoughtful book about prayer. It could definitely make you revisit your ideas about how, when, and why to pray. However, I wouldn't say it was "life-changing" for me.
I am making an effort to read books I own. I have had Get Off Your Knees & Pray by Sheila Walsh on my shelf for at least ten years.
So, my question is this: if prayer is God's gift to us to help us live on this broken planet, why do we find it so hard to pray?
The book has four parts. They are the path, the problem, the plan, and the purpose. The sections are broken into small, manageable chapters that relate to their heading.
While I wanted to love this book, I found it interesting and good. There were no life-changing moments for me or even new information. It is written in an easy, conversational style. I think it would be best for those who are new to prayer, struggle to pray, or want to understand why prayer is so important. I have at least one other book on my shelf by this author, and I will read it, and others by her.
Subtitle: A woman's guide to life-changing prayer.
In this excellent study on prayer, author Sheila Walsh leads the reader into a deeper understanding of communication with God. It's more than a method. It's a lifestyle. Our prayer life hinges on how we see God, who we think He sees us, and our level of commitment to Him. Walsh shares many interesting, funny, and sometimes poignant examples from her life that have led her to share her thoughts with others through this book.
I found this to be a challenging, comforting, thought-provoking, inspiring book that I would recommend to anyone who has an interest in a deeper understanding of prayer in the life of a Christian.
It is a good book! It encourages us to have faith, trust, and believe that God loves us and help us know that our prayers are from who we are and commune openly with Him to increase our faith and develop our genuine love for others and for Him, too. This book helps us to openly accept that God is there for us every moment without doubting He might not give us what we want that can be discouraging for us or we joyfully rejoice to receive the needs He provides for us. He is the Omnipresent and He is LOVE.
This is a very great and refreshing book. I admit that my prayer life has been dry and I need some help in figuring out how to be back on conversing all with God. It is good that in this book, Sheila Walsh not only reminds readers about what prayer is and its vitality in the relationship we have with God, but she also reminds readers that He is in control of all situations. She sets true stories from people to act as proof of God's work in someone's life. I love the way she interprets every experience, either hers or others, from a Christian perspective. With this book, I learned a lot of things about prayer and I could say some of what I believed about it before was wrong. Also, I did not expect that by reading this, you could also get parenting advice, which is great to encounter especially for some mothers who will read this.
This is light and very easy to understand. The conversational tone adds to the effectiveness of the book. I'm giving this a full 5 star.
I've heard Sheila Walsh speak many times at Women of Faith. This book asks the questions she heard about praying and she gives some answers. She is so full of faith and love!!!
