I’m glad Veronica took a chance on Kumi. She had trauma thy caused her to be guarded. Kumi was a great guy and they were good together. The ending felt a little rushed but I really enjoyed it.
It has been a very long time since I've read a category romance, having long since grown tired of the formulaic situations and characters, but this well-written book makes me glad that I took a chance on a recommendation from a friend.
This wasn't an overly gratuitous tale about a younger man and an older woman, and while there was a little of that annoying hand wringing on the part of the lead character Veronica (does it make much sense to have her be asexual because of an attempted rape? Come on, this woman wasn't born in the dark ages, she was supposedly educated--she'd have known that what happened to her wasn't her fault. The idea of making her slightly virginal isn't realistic). Thankfully, the entire book wasn't spent dwelling on the issue. Of course, because she had married an older man, it was natural that some of her family and peers might look slightly askance at her choosing a mate in the oppsite direction.
Kumi Walker was the perfect beta male--a strong, positive man with his own cross to bear. Too bad some of these category stories don't allow much in the way of deeper development, I would have liked to have seen more interaction between him and his father. At least he was more than ready to have a serious relationship with a classy and well-educated woman, like Veronica. I also liked the fact that he was a well-traveled young man who spoke French fluently. A nice romantic touch.
What I really loved about this book (and one of the main reasons I gave it 5 stars) was in its portrayal of wealthy and educated black people who ARE NOT rappers. Ms. Alers' gives the reader a bit of history into the lives of old black money in the South. The family moments are wonderful as well.
Jerome Kumi Walker and Veronica Johnson-Hamlin's Story
This novel opens with a quote from Ecclesiastes about how there is a time for sorrow and a time for love, each determined by God, not man. Kumi and Veronica had each experienced sorrow and rejection, plus many self-fulfilling experiences in their careers and travels as well, but neither had experienced blissful, unconditional love, and they didn't think they ever would - they thought that kind of love was only for other people. Then, one day fate brings the two together in the mountains of western North Carolina, in the Asheville area of the Great Smoky Mountains. It was as if they had been hit with electricity, but there were issues to overcome, including a 10 year age difference. If you suddenly and unexpectedly met the one who completes you like no other, would age matter? Would you care about the whispers and stares? Or, would you do whatever it took to hold onto a once in a lifetime love? I like the insights into the lives of some of Atlanta and Asheville's long established, wealthy African-American families. Also, the description of the scenery and the food will make you want to visit the places described.
I plucked this older romance out of Mount TBR as it fit a couple reading challenges, including the Popsugar prompt of a “romance novel by a BIPOC author.” So I’m reading along tonight, nearly done with chapter four when — it suddenly jumps from page 64 to 97. Not only is the end of chapter four missing, but all of chapters five and six as well. WTH!!! Thirty-three pages is a sizable chunk of a book that’s only 184 pages.
This annoys me in many ways. The fact I was sold a flawed book by a major publisher. The fact it’s an older book so not likely to recoup my money or receive a replacement book. The time I already put into a book I cannot finish. Okay, technically I could finish it, but it would be difficult to do, knowing I’ve missed a huge section of it and who knows what details pertaining to the plot. I’m also annoyed on behalf of the author for a publisher that sold a defective book. Authors and readers both deserve better! 😡
An African younger man falls for an beautiful older african american woman after stopping to change a flat tire. When she tries to pay him for helping her out, he refuses money, and instead pleads for a home cooked southern style meal. After he explained why he had been looking forward (he had been serving in the military over seas) she relented and agreed to to his request. HEA love story follows!
I loved Kumi and Veronica's love story. This was a very enjoyable read, one I would absolutely recommend for anyone to read. Great job as usual Rochelle please keep all these wonderful stories coming. I love and enjoy reading the stories that you pen. Thank you.🙏👍❤
My first book by this author and what a great way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon. I have a couple other books written by author Alers. Looking forward to reading her works again. An interesting story that is romantic for two people not searching for romance or love. Well written, superb grammar and enjoyable themes.
3 1/2 Stars! ~ Kumi returns to North Carolina from Paris to help his sister get her country inn and restaurant off the ground. While taking a ride on his motorcycle, he stops at the side of the road to help a woman with a flat tire. Veronica 's reluctant to let him help, but gives in. Kumi refuses the money she offers to pay him, instead he requests a home cooked meal. When he arrives at her house a few days later to collect on the meal, he's shocked when she opens the door and discovers she is completely gray. But that doesn't simmer his attraction to her, after all it's only ten years. Her 42 to his 32. Veronica's finds the age difference harder to get over. She's widowed from a husband that had been her senior of 30 years and doesn't want a relationship that hints of scandal. But their attraction is real and with every moment they spend together, Veronica finds herself falling in love.
Kumi's almost too good to be true. He's patient with Veronica over the age difference, and also discovers she has a trauma in her past that very much affects their future, and explains her marraige to a man so much older than her. Veronica, though mature and sure of her life, is far from confident when it comes to attractive men. She wants more than anything to be able to let go, and just allow herself to experience Kumi's love. The tone of this book was a little laid back, though intense later as they resolved their issues. I enjoyed it.
I came across this book during an Ebay search. The title intrigued me, as did the teaser. The concept of a much older woman was carried out very well.

A wonderful tale of two people who prove the fact that "age ain't nothing but a number". Both Kumi and Veronica have been missing the kind of connection with a lover that involves both friendship and sensual chemistry. The road to their happy ending is filled with colorful family members and scrumptious meals. I thoroughly enjoyed the ride.
