Music & Mayhem is my game. Started my trumpet career in my teens, got into the mayhem later. My print journalist father taught me how to play pool in the police station. Maybe that's how I discovered my dark side.
After gigging on trumpet in the Boston area for many years (while teaching at Brown University and Berklee College of Music), I moved to New Orleans, which became the setting for my crime thrillers. Scroll down and check the video trailers.
I survived Katrina, but divide my time between Boston and the Big Easy. On my website I post profiles of women musicians. I also write ebooks about true crime: DARK DEEDS about serial killers, stalkers and domestic homicides. Please come visit!!
I think I've figured out that reading Susan Fleet's Frank Renzi series is an acquired taste. The sixth book in the series was more enjoyable to read than any of the other five books. Renzi, is the venerable NOPD homicide detective formerly from Boston where he spent many years on Boston's PD homicide department. Somewhat broken after a bad divorce and a shooting that went sideways, he'd moved to New Orleans for a new start. Renzi now partnered with the respected Kenyon Martin have become the department's top detective team. Donna Gates, the semi-popular TV anchor for a local channel is married to the very powerful Hunter Gates. Gates is CEO of a gun manufacturing business and a feared city councilman. Hunter Gates is not a man to trifle with. Late one evening at the Gates family home two men break in and abduct Donna and her two children. One abductor wore a Mickey Mouse rubber mask, and the other wore a Donald Duck mask. The kidnappers want $1 million for the return of Hunter's family. Renzi and Martin wonder if Hunter may be somehow involved in this crime. Hunter makes it clear he doesn't want FBI involved investigating a kidnapping case. Hunter wants Renzi to handle the ransom drop, and return of his family himself. Hunter wants to also keep the NOPD out of abduction for the safety of his family. Hunter is fearing an investigation of any kind on himself and his family. Renzi is alarmed at the number of red flags Gates is creating with this abduction. When the ransom drop gets badly botched Hunter Gates become the NOPD's worst nightmare. With each passing day the more the Gates family is explored the more ugly details emerge. Both Hunter and Donna have dirty little secrets and lies they don't want discovered. It seems the kidnappers know this as well. This sixth Renzi outing moved at a very fast pace. Tripping up the basic plot with twists and turns made it a more enjoyable lead. After six Frank Renzi books, I finally feel for his character. Most of the previous five books the characters were too hollow. However here in, "Missing", we have characters with life and depth. I thought the ending was pretty good too. I'm actually looking forward to a seventh Renzi book if author Susan Fleet puts one out there. Of Fleet's six books this one was by far the best. (Yes, better than the "Natalie's") Giving this one five stars out of a possible five stars for, "Missing", from author Susan Fleet. If you haven't read any of the Frank Renzi series start with the two "Natalie" books and then grab, "Missing" . They get better as you go.
Missing is a must read for crime enthusiasts. It moves at a good pace, well plotted out characters. Very emotional at times. The "bad guys" are clearly defined they are the type that you have no sympathy for. Excellent police work from compassionate and devoted detectives. I highly recommend Missing. Warning some scenes of rape and torture was difficult for me.
This story was very suspenseful. Tension of solution carried me through to the end. This was my first read of the Frank Renzi series by Susan Fleet who I became aware of through Goodreads and her profile and interests (music, jazz, empowering women) made me click on the free sample ebook offer.
Frank Renzi has his hands full in New Orleans in this story. Every character is in his or her own mire of flaws and mistakes as is fitting to a criminal investigation, some a bit forgivable and some not, but no one is without at least a glimmer of compassion somewhere for something.
This story is complex in that the individuals under investigation are having past crimes revealed while changing their minds about how their participation in the current events unfold. So much what the heck is going on with teasing tidbits of new data or decisions surfacing from the characters themselves that I was very interested if knowing how it would all turn out.
This story may be one of the most intricate mysteries I have read and the steady pace never diminishes throughout.
If crime, vengeance, suspense and humanity in chaos attempting to find their way out is to your liking you will love this book.
This story grabs you in the first few pages. Beautifully written, I couldn't put the book down. A gripping and heart rendering story. I have to recommend this book to my sister's.
First book by this author and will check out others. Liked the unusual twist to a kidnapping. Appreciated no sex or foul language to take away from the story.
